At every nook andcorner in Kerala, you will seeHindu Temples, MuslimMosques and Chr i s t i an

People belonging tovarious religions celebratev a r i o u s f e s t i v a l s l i k eO n a m , V i s h u , D i w a l i ,Christmas, and Eid- ul- Fitr.Every nation has its ownculture of refined qualities andtraditions and it refers to theway people live. Culture is ashared behavior inherited from

ideas, values, beliefs, and knowledge. We have a diverseculture and live in Unity ie-Unity in diversity.

This is the time of Vishu Festival .Vishu falls on thefirst day of' Medam' –the astronomical New Year day. It is thecommon belief that the fortunes of the coming year depends onthe first object they see on the Vishu day. Hence the mostimportant ceremony connected with Vishu is the Kani kaanalwhich literally means the first sight. On the day prior to theVishu day, Kani is arranged in every Hindu home .It consists ofa number of things considered as auspicious and is arranged in acircular bell metal vessel called Uruli. These include Cadjanleaf book, gold ornaments, fresh white cloth, a measure of riceor paddy, bell metal mirror, flowers of the Konna tree, halved

jack fruits, halved coconut, yellow cucumber and two standingoil lamps emitting sparkling light. The Kani which is arrangedin a convenient room is seen by every member of the familyafter he or she is woken up in the early hours of the dawn. Anindispensable item connected with Vishu is the VishuKaineettam which means the gift of money to the children and

poor people by the elder members of the family. It is alsocustomary for children to fire crackers on Vishu day afterseeing Vishukani .The air is filled with a sense of love andcelebrations. People are cheerful. On behalf of all Trustees of Gurudeva Charitable Trust, I pray tothe Almighty to let this Vishu bring fortunes to all students,Faculty, staff and well wishers of Sree Narayana Institute ofMedical Sciences.

Best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year. M.G.Pushpakaran,GCT President.

Dicrofilariasis or the dog heart worm was detected by ultrasound in the swelling on the chest of the girl. The worm which was 1cm long was removed surgically. Pathologist & Microbiologist ofErnakulam Medical Center, where the patient had attended, identifiedthe worm as Dicrofilaria repens. The Zoonosis is transmitted fromdogs to humans through mosquitoes ,and all known mosquito speciesfound here are capable of transmitting the larvae of Dicrofilaria.Thelarvae that get transmitted from dogs had not been found to reproducein human body. Also, the infection is rare and no threat to life had beenreported so far.

Adult worms usually settle in lungs, eyes and sub coetaneoustissue and produce symptoms such as cough, pain and swelling .Whenlesions are in the sub coetaneous tissue or eyes, diagnosis and surgicaltreatment are easier. When the worms settle in lungs, detection andtreatment are difficult. Chest x-rays of the worm in lung lesionsometimes mimic Lung Cancer. The treatment involves the surgicalremoval of the worm with adjacent tissue.

Only few cases of Dicrofilariasis had been identified. The

worm completes its whole life cycle in the dog's body itself. It is theexposure to mosquitoes that lets the larvae in the dog's blood streamenter the mosquitoes, which may further transmit to human

body.About 7-24 % of the domestic dogspopulation in Keralaharbours this larvae in blood .The rate in stray dogs may be higherconsidering their increased exposure to mosquitoes.

The first case from Kerala was reported in 1976.About 800cases had been reported worldwide. Dicrofilariasis could beconsidered an Emerging Zoonosis because of the abundance ofdomestic and stray dogs and the mosquito population .Mosquitocontrol is the best preventive strategy.Source-The Hindu Daily Dated 11-03-2016.
