FOR ULGE ENGINES: Are certified to op-erate on regular unleaded gasoline. Includethe following emission control system(s):EM, TWC (if so equipped). Include any useradjustable features - therefore no other ad-

justmants are needed.

WARNING: Experience indicates that alco-hol blended fuels (called gasohol or thoseusing ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation and for-mation of acids during storage. Acidic gascan damage the fuel system of an enginewhile in storage.

To avoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage for 30days or longer. Start the engine and let itrun until the fuel lines and carburetor areempty. Use the carburetor bowl drain toempty residual gasoline from the floatchamber. Use fresh fuel next season (see

•Storage instructions on page 22 for addi-tional information).

Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

Fill the fuel tank with a fresh, clean, un-leaded regular, unleaded premium, orreformulated automotive gasoline only. DONOT use leaded gasoline. Be sure that thecontainer you pour the gasoline from isclean and free from rust or other foreignparticles. Never use gasoline that may bestale from long periods of storage in thecontainer.

/_ CAUTION: Gasoline is flammable andcaution must be used when handling or stor_ing it.Do not fill fuel tank while snow thrower isrunning, when it is hot, or when snowthrower is in an enclosed area.

Keep away from open flame or an electricalspark and DO NOT SMOKE while filling thefuel tank.

NEVER fill the tank completely. FILL THETANK to within 1/4" - 1/2" from the top toprovide space for expansion of fuel.

Always fill fuel tank outdoors and use a fun-nel or spout to prevent spilling.

auger without taking the following precau-tions:

• Release auger drive and traction drivelevers.

• Move throttle lever to stop position.

• Remove (DO NOT TURN) ignition key.

• Disconnect spark plug wire.

• Do not place your hands in the auger ordischarge chute. Use a pry bar.

SNOW THROWING TIPS

For maximum snow thrower efficiency inremoving snow, adjust ground speed,NEVER the throttle. Go slower in deep, freezing, or wet snow. If the tracks slip, reduce forward speed. The engine is de-signed to deliver maximum performanceat full throttle and should be run at thispower setting at all times. Most efficient

13

Page 14: Snow Blower

snow blowing is accomplished when thesnow is removed immediately after itfalls.

• For complete snow removal, slightly over-lap each path previously taken. Usemore overlap in deep snow to preventoverloading.

• The snow should be discharged downwind whenever possible. In windy condi-tions, lower the chute deflector to directdischarged snow close to the ground, where it is less likely to blow into un-wanted areas.

• For normal usage, set the skids so thatthe scraper bar is 1/8" above the skids. For extremely hard-packed snow sur-faces, adjust the skids upward so that thescraper bar touches the ground.

• On gravel or crushed rock surfaces, setthe skids at 1-1/4" below the scraper bar(See To Adjust Skids Height paragraphon page 17). Stones and gravel must notbe picked up and thrown by the machine.

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES

After the snow throwing job has beencompleted, allow the engine to idle for afew minutes, which will melt snow andaccumulated ice off the engine.

Clean the snow thrower thoroughly aftereach use.

Remove ice and snow accumulation andall debris from the entire snow thrower, and flush with water (if possible) to re-move all salt or other chemicals. Wipesnow thrower dry.

LUBRICATION• Hex Shaft and Gears - Hex shaft and

gears require no lubrication. All bearingsand bushings are lifetime lubricated andrequire no maintenance.

NOTE: Any greasing or oiling of the abovecomponents can cause contamination ofthe friction wheel. If the disc drive plate orfriction wheel comes in contact with greaseor oil, damage to the friction wheel will re-sult.

Should grease or oil come in contact withthe disc drive plate or friction wheel, be sureto clean the plate and wheel thoroughly.

NOTE: For storage, the hex shaft andgears should be wiped with 5W-30 motor oilto prevent rusting. See figure above.

• Auger Gear Box - The auger gear boxhas been factory lubricated for life. If forsome mason lubricant should leak out, have auger gear case checked by a com-petent repairman.

ENGINE

LUBRICATION

Check the crankcase oil level (see figure be-low) before starting the engine and aftereach five (5) hours of continuous use. AddS.A.E. 5W30 motor oil as needed. Tightenfill cap/dipstick securely each time youcheck the oil level.

NOTE: Oil level must bebetween full and add mark

OIL RECOMMENDATION

Only use high quality detergent oil ratedwith API service classification SG. Selectthe oil's viscosity grade according to yourexpected operating temperature:

NOTE: For extreme cold operating condi-tions of 0° and below, use a partial synthetic0W30 motor oil for easier starting.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils improvestarting in cold weather, these multi-viscosityoils will result in increased oil consumptionwhen used above 32°F. Check your engineoil level more frequently to avoid possibleengine damage from running low on oil.

Change the oil every 25 hours and at thebeginning of each season.• Position the snow thrower so that the oil

drain plug is at the lowest point on the en-gine. Remove the oil drain plug and the oilfill cap/dipstick. Drain the oil into a suit-able container. Oil will drain more freelywhen warm.

• Replace the oil drain plug and tighten se-curely.

_rHousing Height AdjustSkids

For normal hard surfaces, adjust the skidsas follows:

• Checktire pressure (14 to 17 pounds).

• Place the extra shear bolts supplied(found in parts bag) under each end of thescraper bar near but not under the skid.

• Loosen the skid mounting nuts (see figureabove) and adjust the skids up to bringthe front of the snow thrower down. Re-tighten the mounting nuts.

• Set the skid on the other side at the sameheight.

For rocky or uneven surfaces, adjust theskids as follows:

• Raise the front of the snow thrower bymoving the skids down. This will help pre-vent rocks and other debris from beingpicked up and thrown by the auger.

TO ADJUST SCRAPER BAR

After considerable use, the metal scraperbar will have a definite wear pattern. Thescraper bar may have to be returned to itsoriginal lower setting to maintain the originalperformance level. To adjust:• Position the snow thrower on a level sur-

face.

* Make sure both tires are equally inflated.Proper tire pressure is 14 to 17 PSI. Seeside of tire for maximum inflation. Do not

exceed sidewall maximum pressure ontire.

NOTE: A yearly checkup or tune-up by aCraftsman Service Center is a good way toinsure that your snow thrower will providemaximum performance for the next season.

ENGINE STORAGE

Gasoline must be removed or treated to pre-vent gum deposits from forming in the tank, filter, hose, and carburetor during storage. Also during storage, alcohol blended gaso-line that uses ethanol or methanol (some-times called gasohol) attracts water. It actson the gasoline to form acids which damagethe engine.

• To remove gasoline, run the engine untilthe tank is empty and the engine stops. Then drain remaining gasoline from car-buretor by pressing upward on bowl drainlocated on the bottom of carburetor (seefigure below).

• If you do not want to remove gasoline, use fuel stabilizer supplied with unit orpurchase Craftsman Fuel Stabilizer No.33500. Add fue ! stabilizer to any gasolineleft in the tank to minimize gum depositsand acids. If the tank is almost empty, mix stabilizer with fresh gasoline in aseparate container and add some to thetank.

Always follow instructions on stabilizer con-tainer. Then run engine at least 10 minutesafter stabilizer is added to allow mixture toreach carburetor. Store snow thrower in a

safe place. See Waming above.

You can keep your engine in good operatingcondition during storage by:

• Changing oil (See page 16).

• Lubricating the piston/cylinder area. Thiscan be done by first removing the sparkplug and squirting a few drops of cleanengine oil into the spark plug hole. Thencover the spark plug hole with a rag toabsorb oil spray. Next, rotate the engineby pulling the starter rope fully out two orthree times. Finally, reinstall spark plugand attach spark plug wire.
