Essential Oil Specifications (Chapter 2 - Part 1) Oils A - L

We have spilt these notes into two parts because of the size of the document.

Here are the specifications and some general information on the more popular oils that we use. The information relates to the species and country of origin of the oils we prefer.

All oils differ slightly from batch to batch; there may be variation of colour, odour and consistency depending on species and origin. For instance a cold press lime that we carry is

dark green and the distilled version is almost clear. We have written briefly on each one to

give you the general idea of its uses and a little bit about its history, however there is a lot more information available and this would be the size of an encyclopaedia if we tried to

include it all. If there is particular oil you would like included, please get in touch.

The oils we have starred are the ones we suggest to stock in your kit at home if

you are just starting out, but again they are our preferred oils and there may be others you

want to include.

You will notice in a lot of the descriptions, we have used the words “According to Aromatherapists” or similar words; this is because you must be very careful when making

medical claims in the UK, and you can be challenged by the MHA and be fined. For those of you blending products for sale, again you need to be very careful with the claims you make

about your product and be able to show proof usually by testing by an external source. The

ANISEED

Aniseed Oil ~ BOTANICAL NAME Pimpinella anisum Aniseed This oil will solidify in lower temperatures, and therefore may need heating before

use. You will notice a market price variance on Aniseed. The real aniseed is from countries like

Spain however the market has been heavily saturated by Chinese Star Anise which is a

different species but is sold as Pimpinella Anisum. Naughty but most people don’t notice.

SCENT: Spicy and sweet PLANT PART: seeds

EXTRACTION METHOD: steam

ORIGIN: Spain USES:

Aniseed essential oil has a strong liquorice-like flavour and bouquet.

Aromatherapists say it has a calming influence and is relaxing. They also say it may help temporary relieve the symptoms of coughs, sinusitis, hay fever and congested head colds.

Hunters use it to enhance bait and attract game birds home. It is also used in fishing & deer

keeping. Can be used in the training of dogs too. Apparently certain animals and men are very

attracted to aniseed and also ylang ylang, strange but true. It can be used correctly diluted, normally 3-5 drops to 10ml carrier for Massage, or 3-5 drops

in the bath, inhalation water, or on a compress. Note it is one of the strongest oils available

so don’t spill it and always use in the correct dilution. It will linger for months if accidently split as we have found

Game Bird Stay Used in a ratio of between 20:1 and 15:1, sunflower or corn oil to aniseed and then mixed

with feed. (Pheasant apparently prefer sunflower)

Fish Bait

Numerous recipes for bait alone and in combination with other oils such as cinnamon and cassia

If you would like any further information on particular uses for this oil, please don’t hesitate

Aniseed is not an oil I would suggest keeping unless for culinary or animal uses or you like

the intense aniseed smell

BASIL Attract abundance, mental clarity, use sparingly as it’s strong

Basil ~ BOTANICAL NAME Ocimum basilicum

Basil is annual Herb and grows 20-50 cm (8-20 in); when in bloom the purple- white flowers appear in clusters, framed by oval pointed green leaves Plant. Basil essential oil is extracted

from the flowering sweet Basil. It is grown commercially throughout Europe, the

Mediterranean, Pacific Islands and in America.

SCENT: Clear, herbaceous and light refreshing with a faint balsamic woody back note and a lasting sweetness.

STRENGTH OF AROMA: Strong Aromatic Scent: Clear, herbaceous and light refreshing with a faint balsamic woody back note and a lasting sweetness

PLANT PART: Leaves & Flowers

EXTRACTION METHOD: Steam distilled ORIGIN: Italy

COLOUR: Golden yellow with some green tone CONSISTENCY: Light

NOTE: Top

USES: Prized in Ayurvedic medicine for its ability to strengthen compassion, faith and bring clarity.

Prized in ritual for attracting wealth. An ideal oil for meditation. The essential oil has a very high proportion of camphor and a warm, aromatic, and sweet- spicy smell. It is a refreshing,

light and uplifting tonic. Massage, baths inhalation. Aromatherapists say a few drops of Basil essential oil on a tissue clears the head. Diluted with massage oil, it can be rubbed in to

relieve insect bites or aches and pains. The smell of sweet Basil in the bath will lift your

spirits, great in uplifting and invigorating blends.

Blends well with: with Bergamot, Clary Sage, Clove Bud, Lime, Eucalyptus, Juniper, Lemon,

Neroli, and Rosemary

History: In Greek its name means 'royal

remedy' or 'king'. Beloved culinary plant of Indian, Asian and Mediterranean countries.

Cautions: May irritate sensitive

skin. Do not use during

pregnancy.

BENZOIN Especially if you are going to be blending fragrance as

this is a great base note for anchoring citrus oils and other top notes.

BENZOIN 100% PURE ESSENTIAL OIL

BOTANICAL NAME Styrax benzoin

The Benzoin tree is from Java, Sumatra and Thailand and grows to 8 meters (20 feet).

Deep incisions are made in the trunk of the tree from which the grey colour sap exudes. When the resinous lump becomes hard and brittle, it is collected from the bark.

Benzoin oil has a sweet, warm and vanilla-like aroma. It may need to be warmed before use

as it has thick treacle like consistency.

SCENT: Warm and comforting.

STRENGTH OF AROMA: Medium PLANT PART: Resin

EXTRACTION METHOD: Solvent (food grade)

ORIGIN: Sumatra COLOUR: Golden Brown

CONSISTENCY: Thick and Viscous NOTE: Base

USES: Aromatherapists use it as an antiseptic, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, & carminative.

Benzoin is used as an essential oil as well as a fixative in perfumes. Qualified Aromatherapy

practitioners have been known to use Benzoin for bronchitis, coughs, colds, rheumatism, arthritis, scar tissue, circulation, nervous tension, stress, muscle pains, chilblains, rashes and

mouth ulcers.

BLENDS WELL WITH

Benzoin essential oil blends well with Bergamot, Coriander, Frankincense, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Myrrh, Orange, Petitgrain, Rose and Sandalwood.

HISTORY: Benzoin, also known as gum Benjamin, is one of the classic ingredients of incense. In ancient

civilizations it was used in fumigation. Benzoin is an ingredient of 'Friar's balsam', an aid to respiratory problems.

BERGAMOT Enhance your mood with a quick sniff and calm

your nerves, stunning with clary sage as an anti depressant x

BERGAMOT 100% PURE & NATURAL ESSENTIAL OIL

LATIN NAME CITRUS BERGAMIA The Bergamot tree can grow up to four meters high, with star-shaped flowers, bearing

citrus fruit resembling a cross between an orange and a grapefruit but in a pear-shape. The fruit ripens from green to yellow. Bergamot is commercially used as flavouring for Earl Grey

tea and marmalade and in many cosmetics. This cheering and uplifting essential oil is ideal to use at the start of your day or during what feels like a particularly long day!

SCENT: Citrus, fruity and sweet with a warm spicy floral note.

STRENGTH OF AROMA: Medium PLANT PART: Fruit Peel

EXTRACTION METHOD: Cold Pressed ORIGIN: Italy

COLOUR: Greenish yellow

CONSISTENCY: Light NOTE: Middle

USES: Aromatherapists use Bergamot essential oil to uplift the spirits if feeling down and enhance

the mood. They also consider it to be a stress reliever & release tensions. Especially good when your nerves need controlling, exams, interviews, stressful situations.

Just briefly inhale from the bottle or add a couple of drops to a tissue.

We use it in anti depressant blends, uplifting blends and for general fragrancing. BLENDS WELL WITH

Black Pepper, Clary sage, Cypress, Frankincense, Geranium, Jasmine, Mandarin, Nutmeg, Orange, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Vetivert and Ylang Ylang.

HISTORY:

The name Bergamot is derived from the city Bergamo in Lombardy where the oil was first sold. This tree is native to South East Asia but was introduced to Europe, and particularly

Italy, but is also found in the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. You may remember a famous sun tanning oil that used bergamot to enhance the tan colour achieved. It’s also

famously in Earl Grey tea.

Caution: Do not apply to the skin before going out into the sun as this may increase the

susceptibility of sunburn. There is an alternative version available which has the chemicals removed so it won’t react in sunlight.

As with all essential oils, should not be used on cats, reptiles or caged birds.

BLACK PEPPER Muscle and cramps relief when combined

with rosemary and ginger, smells great blended with orange too! Black Pepper 100% Pure & Natural Essential Oil

BOTANICAL NAME Piper nigrum Black Pepper is a plant which originally was a forest plant and this climbing woody vine

uses trees or other supports to grow to about twenty feet high, but is normally kept to about

12 feet for commercial purposes and has a lifespan of about twenty years.

SCENT: It is strong, sharp, spicy smelling oil. STRENGTH OF AROMA: Medium

USES:

Aromatherapists say Black pepper oil can be used to help in the treatment of pain relief, rheumatism, chills, flu, colds, increase circulation, exhaustion, muscular aches, physical and

emotional coldness, nerve tonic, and fevers. We use it in our Exotique blends with orange or other citrus, we also use it in our Arthritis

Ease and Muscle Ease blends.

BLENDS WELL WITH

Bergamot, Clary Sage, Clove, Coriander, Fennel, Frankincense, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Lavender, Juniper, Lemon, Lime, Mandarin, Sage, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang.

CAUTIONS: Black pepper oil may cause irritation to sensitive skins and using too much

could over-stimulate the kidneys and should be avoided in pregnancy due to its possible skin

sensitizing effect. As with all essential oils, do not use on cats, reptiles or caged birds.

CAJEPUT

CAJEPUT 100% PURE & NATURAL ESSENTIAL OIL

BOTANICAL NAME Melaleuca cajeputi

Cajeput is a small tree with an erect but crooked trunk; a soft, thick, spongy, whitish, ash-coloured bark; and scattered branches, with the slender twigs often drooping similar to a weeping willow. The leaves are alternate, most frequently vertical, and short stalked. They

are very aromatic when bruised.

SCENT: The essential oil of Cajeput has a fresh, camphorous aroma with a slight fruity note. The fragrance reminiscent of a mix of camphor, rosemary, eucalyptus and cardamom.

STRENGTH OF AROMA: Medium PLANT PART: Twigs EXTRACTION METHOD: Steam distilled

ORIGIN: Indonesia

COLOUR: Pale Yellow CONSISTENCY: Light

NOTE: Middle USES:

Aromatherapists use it as a mild analgesic, antiseptic & in animal insecticide. We have used it

when blending for horses and dogs, works well with lavender and tea tree to take the itch out and numb the area of a bite.

Lavender; Cedarwood; Clove Bud; Rosemary; Thyme

CAUTIONS: No known toxicity. Avoid during pregnancy. As with all essentials and perfumes, do not use on cats, reptiles or caged birds.

CAMPHOR CAMPHOR 100% PURE & NATURAL ESSENTIAL OIL

BOTANICAL NAME Cinnamomum camphora

The Camphor tree can grow up to 35 meters (100 feet) and camphor is found in every part

of the tree. C. camphora is an evergreen tree looking not unlike linden is many branched, flowers white, small and clustered, fruit a red berry much like cinnamon.

Camphor oil is extracted by steam from the chipped wood, root stumps and branches. It is then rectified under vacuum and filter pressed. White camphor oil is the first distillation

fraction.

SCENT: Strong

STRENGTH OF AROMA: The essential oil of Camphor has a strong, penetrating, fragrant odour. The main chemical components are: Cineol, Camphor, Borneol, Camphene, Menthol,

Borneol, Pinene, and Dipentene. PLANT PART: Wood

EXTRACTION METHOD: Steam distillation

ORIGIN: China COLOUR: colourless to pale yellow

CONSISTENCY: Light NOTE: Top

USES: The therapeutic properties of Camphor oil according to Aromatherapists include the following:

anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, cardiac, carminative, diuretic, febrifuge, insecticide, laxative,

stimulant and vulnerary. Camphor oil can be used in the treatment of nervous depression, acne, inflammation, arthritis, muscular aches and pains, sprains, rheumatism, bronchitis,

coughs, colds, fever, flu and infectious diseases. It is a well-known preventive of moths and other insects, such as worms in wood; natural history cabinets are often made of it, the wood

of the tree being occasionally imported to make cabinets for entomologists.

BLENDS WELL WITH Cedarwood, Coriander, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Ginger, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Orange,

Rose, Rosemary, Thyme and Ylang Ylang.

CAUTIONS: Camphor oil is powerful oil and should be used with care. Overdosing can cause convulsions and vomiting. Pregnant women or persons suffering from

epilepsy and asthma should not use it.

Cedarwood excellent in “Men’s blends”

CEDARWOOD 100% PURE & NATURAL ESSENTIAL OIL ~

BOTANICAL NAME cedarus deodora is a slow-growing, coniferous evergreen, chosen because it’s better fragrancing properties

than Virginian etc

SCENT: Cedarwood scent is sweet and woody, sometimes reminiscent of sandalwood. STRENGTH OF AROMA: Strong PLANT PART: Wood

EXTRACTION METHOD: Steam distilled

ORIGIN: Himalayas COLOUR: Colourless to pale yellow

CONSISTENCY: Medium NOTE: Base

USES:

Cedarwood is said by Aromatherapists to ease tension and calm rattled nerves and ease anxiety. It has been used as an expectorant and in treating haemorrhoids. It is found in a

number of repellent blends as it deters moths and other insects, and will act as a mild astringent. It is a very powerful antiseptic, fungicidal and antiseborrheic (helps with dandruff,

hair loss and oily hair). Consumers will also see it in men's toiletries, in products used to combat acne, and in products designed to relieve muscle and joint pain.

We use it in our men’s blends, shaving oils and also in our hair blends.

BLENDS WELL WITH Bergamot, Clary Sage, Cypress, Frankincense, Jasmine, Juniper, Neroli, Oakmoss, Petitgrain,

Rose, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Vetiver, and Ylang-Ylang.

CAUTIONS: Non-toxic. This oil should not be used during pregnancy. Do not use with high blood pressure or heart problems. May irritate sensitive skin. As with all

essential oils, should not be used on cats, caged birds or reptiles.

CHAMOMILE ROMAN calms and helps with sleep,

superb in skin care, especially for repair, however it’s expensive!

CHAMOMILE ROMAN 100% PURE & NATURAL ESSENTIAL OIL

BOTANICAL NAME Chamaemelum Nobile

Chamomile is a low growing perennial that rarely exceeds 9". The plant is extensively grown in central and Eastern Europe. The leaves are lacy and finely divided, on stems capped with

small, white daisy like flowers. The relaxing aroma of this essential oil, sometimes described as like 'apples and straw' is an

exotic and rich scent. It is commonly accepted as the best smelling of the three Chamomiles.

SCENT: Sweet, fresh & spicy. STRENGTH OF AROMA: Strong

PLANT PART: Flower Head EXTRACTION METHOD: Steam distilled

ORIGIN: Hungary COLOUR: light blue / clear

CONSISTENCY: Thin

USES:

Antiseptic, analgesic, anti-neuralgic, astringent, insecticide, sedative and a tonic.

Aromatherapists use Chamomile essential oil in the treatment of rheumatism, neuralgia, muscular pain, circulation problems, colds, flu, dental infection, and diarrhoea and skin

infections. Great in all skincare products especially anti ageing and skin damage. We use it in all our skin care and also in our stress relieving blends. A little goes a long way,

so use it sparingly.

BLENDS WELL WITH

Geranium, Lavender, Rose, Neroli, Marjoram, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Rosewood, Clary Sage, Ylang Ylang (FOR SKIN DAMAGE ROSEHIP)

CAUTIONS: No known toxicity. Use well diluted. High doses may trigger skin reactions in sensitive individuals. AS WITH ALL ESSENTIAL OILS, DO NOT USE ON

CATS, REPTILES OR CAGED BIRDS.

CINNAMON fragrancing great but can cause skin reactions

CINNAMON 100% PURE & NATURAL ESSENTIAL OIL ~ POURED TO ORDER FRESH OIL SUPPLIED IN AMBER GLASS WITH TAMPER PROOF CAP

BOTANICAL NAME Cinnamomum verum The Cinnamon Tree is an evergreen native to China and Vietnam that has since been

cultivated in many other regions. It has shiny, leathery green leaves, and small, white flowers with oval shaped purple berries.

SCENT: Cinnamon has a warm, spicy scent .It is slightly herbaceous with pepper notes.

STRENGTH OF AROMA: Medium PLANT PART: Leaves

EXTRACTION METHOD: Steam distilled ORIGIN: France

COLOUR: Golden Brown CONSISTENCY: Thin to Medium

NOTE: Middle to Base

USES: Cinnamon is believed to have the following properties: as a stimulant, as an antiseptic, as an

antibiotic, as an astringent, calming, spiritual and as a natural insecticide and antispasmodic. We only use our cinnamon for fragrancing as we have seen the reactions if can cause in skin

preps. It is used commercially in plump up lip glosses as it makes the lips swell.

BLENDS WELL WITH

Cinnamon blends well with any oil from the citrus family, especially orange, other spice oils (particularly clove), as well as Lavender, Rosemary and Thyme.

CAUTIONS: it is capable of causing sensitivity - particularly with mucous

membranes. It should also be used in proper dilution and avoided during pregnancy.

CITRONELLA Citronella essential oil information Botanical name Cymbopogon nardus Citronella oil is extracted from a resilient grass

Cymbopogon nardus native to Sri Lanka(formerly Ceylon) and Java. It is also known as Sri Lanka or Lenabatu citronella. It is a very aromatic perennial that grows approximately 1

meter (3 feet) in height.

Scent: Citronella has a well rounded lemon citrus scent, though it is much softer than actual

Lemon. It also has subtle wood tones & is slightly sweet. Strength of aroma: Medium

Extraction method: Citronella oil is extracted by the steam distillation of finely chopped

fresh, dried or part-dried grass. Chemical composition

The main chemical components of citronella oil are citronellic acid, borneol, citronellol, geraniol, nerol, citral, citronellal, camphene, dipentene and limonene.

Origin: Sri Lanka

Colour: Yellow Consistency: Thin

Note: Top Uses:

Although this essential oil is best known as an insect repellent, it also has a number of other uses in aromatherapy. For example, clearing the mind, refreshing rooms especially sick rooms

and for softening skin, while combating oily skin and sweaty feet.

Citronella has therapeutic properties as an antiseptic, deodorant, insecticide, mood enhancer and to stimulate the mind. It is often used in combination with Cedarwood, Eucalyptus,

Lavender & others to produce a pleasant smelling natural insect repellent. Helps with minor infection, combating colds and flu. Citronella can also be used for excessive perspiration and

for conditioning oily skin and hair.

Blends well with:

Citronella blends well with most oils, but specifically well with Bergamot, Bitter Orange, Cedarwood, Geranium, Lemon, Orange, Lavender and Pine.

CATS, BIRDS OR REPTILES Precautions

Citronella oil may irritate sensitive skin and cause dermatitis in certain individuals.

Burners and vaporizers

In a diffuser, citronella oil can be used as an insect repellent, for colds and flu, for clearing the mind and to refresh the sickroom.

In a cream or lotion When included in a cream or lotion, citronella oil is most useful to keep the wearer safe from

mosquitoes & midges. It also has a dramatic freshening effect on tired sweaty feet.

CLARY SAGE we call it the “Champagne Oil”, great for cheering you

up

CLARY SAGE 100% PURE & NATURAL ESSENTIAL OIL

BOTANICAL NAME Salvia sclarea

Clary Sage Salvia sclarea, clary, or clary sage, is a biennial herb in the genus Salvia which is native throughout Europe and east and central Asia, but which was historically

mostly found in southern France, Italy, Switzerland, and Syria. At maturity it reaches 1 m in height and has opposing, wooly-texture leaves that are 10-20 cm long and 6-12 cm broad. Its

flowers appear in several clusters of 2-6 on the stem, are 2.5-3.5 cm long, and are white,

pink, or pale purple in color. Clary has a strong and unusual odor that is considered unpleasant by some and very attractive to others.

SCENT: Clary Sage essential oil has an earthy, fruity, and floral aroma that is both nutty and herbaceous, sometimes described as “Hay” like.

STRENGTH OF AROMA: Medium to Strong, PLANT PART: Leaves and Flowers EXTRACTION METHOD: Steam distilled

ORIGIN: Bulgaria

COLOUR: Light Golden Yellow CONSISTENCY: Thin to Medium

NOTE: Middle USES:

In Aromatherapy Clary Sage uses include mood enhancing, deodorant & calming. It is well

known for providing a euphoric action, the “Champagne effect”, historically was used in childbirth to ease contractions and reduce pain. However it is not considered safe to use in

pregnancy unless under the advice and supervision of a medical practitioner. It can be added to shampoo to clean greasy hair. It was also used historically to help relax the spasms of

asthma, again medical supervision & advice would need to be sought. BLENDS WELL WITH

Clary Sage essential oil blends well with generally any essential oil, though it works

particularly well with Bergamot, Cedarwood, Roman and German Chamomile, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Neroli, Orange, Rosewood, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang.

History Clary seeds have a mucilaginous coat, which is why old herbals recommended

placing a seed into the eye of someone with a foreign object in it so that it could adhere to

the object and make it easy to remove. The leaves have also been used as a vegetable. In ales, clary was used as flavouring before the use of hops became common. Additionally it has

been used to flavour wine, notably muscatel, and some tobacco products.

CAUTIONS: Clary Sage is non-toxic, and non-sensitizing. It is not to be used

during pregnancy. As with all essential oils & perfumes, do not use on or near cats, reptiles, or caged birds as they can be toxic. They can be used on dogs and

CLOVE

CLOVE BUD 100% PURE & NATURAL ESSENTIAL OIL ~

BOTANICAL NAME Syzgium aromaticum Clove is derived from the tree Syzgium aromaticum. It is a slender evergreen that grows up

to 12 meters in height (approximately 36 feet). At the start of the rainy season, long buds appear. They change colour over time and are beaten from the trees and dried. These are

the cloves sold commercially.

SCENT: Clove Bud essential oil smells spicy and rich like actual cloves. STRENGTH OF AROMA: Medium to Strong

PLANT PART: Buds

EXTRACTION METHOD: Steam distilled ORIGIN: India

COLOUR: Light Golden Yellow CONSISTENCY: Medium

NOTE: Middle

USES: Cloves called Lavana in India are used in Ayurverdic medicine, Chinese medicine

and Western herbalism and dentistry where the essential oil is used as an anodyne for dental emergencies. Cloves are used as a stomach carminative and are also said to be a

natural antihelmintic. The essential oil is used in aromatherapy when stimulation and

warming is needed, especially for digestive problems. Topical application by massage or poultice over the stomach or abdomen will warm the digestive tract.

In Chinese medicine cloves or ding xiang are considered useful to treat kidney, spleen

and stomach problems and are notable in their ability to warm the middle, direct stomach qi

downward, to treat hiccough and to fortify the kidney yang. As such it is used in formulas for impotence or clear yang deficiency, for morning sickness together with ginseng and

patchouli, or for vomiting and diarrhea due to spleen and stomach upset. Ayurverdic herbalist K.P. Khalsa, RH (AHG), uses cloves internally as a tea and topically as oil for hypotonic

muscles, including for multiple sclerosis. This is also found in Tibetan medicine. Aromatherapists use Clove bud essential oil is an agent for minor pains and aches (particular

dental pain), and for battling flus and colds.

BOTANICAL NAME Cupressus sempervirens The Cypress is a perennial, conical-shaped tree that is about 28 meters (80 feet) high. It is

an evergreen with dark green foliage, small flowers and round brown-grey cones with seed nuts inside. The wood is hard and durable, and red-yellow in colour.

EUCALYPTUS a breath of fresh air

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus attracts much popularity, the refreshing leaves are leathery in texture, hang obliquely or vertically, and are studded with glands containing a fragrant volatile oil. The

flowers in bud are covered with a cup-like membrane, which is thrown off as a lid when the flower expands. The fruit is surrounded by a woody, cup shaped receptacle and contains

numerous minute seeds.

SCENT: Clear, slightly camphorous, fruity aroma.

USES: The principal active ingredient in eucalyptus oil is "eucalyptol" which has strong

germicidal and disinfectant properties. Eucalyptus oil has insect repellent properties and is an

active ingredient in some commercial mosquito repellents. Eucalyptus oil is an effect analgesic and is often used in preparations designed to relieve muscle, nerve, and joint pains.

On a psychological level, it helps to combat exhaustion and dispels mental sluggishness.

Using: for a sense of well being, a few drops of a blend of eucalyptus in massage oils

have a cooling and stimulating effect on both mind and body. Just apply to pulse points. It also improves and detoxifies a sauna room, place three drops of the oil in a ladleful of

water, and pour over the hot stones. For wounds and abscesses, the strong germicidal effects of the eucalyptus oil can help

heal wounds, burns, ulcers and insect bites or stings. Place a few drops of the essential oil on a dressing before covering the area with it.

To suppress coughs make a chest compress with the eucalyptus oils and massage oil and it

will help loosen phlegm and improve lung functions. Eucalyptus oil is also great for the use in a sick room. Five drops of the oil in a diffuser will kill germs in the air and reduce the number

of airborne bacteria.

For external uses:

To lower a fever with a eucalyptus calf wrap. Add five drops of eucalyptus essential oil to one litre of lukewarm water. Soak linen or cotton cloths in the mixture. Then wrap the cloths

around your calves and secure with dry cloths. Calf wraps should be used only when the feet are already warm.

For dandruff, mix ten drops of eucalyptus oil with your shampoo. Massage well into scalp

and wait a few minutes before rinsing with warm water. To alleviate cold symptoms place a few drops of eucalyptus oil on a handkerchief and

deeply inhale the aroma when needed. To relieve sinus and chest congestion, combine five drops of eucalyptus oil with one

drop of peppermint oil on a handkerchief or tissue and place inside your pillowcase overnight.

The aroma will help relieve congestion.

For muscle aches and pains, mix 5 drops of eucalyptus oil and 10ml of sweet almond (or grapeseed oil). Massage into muscles in a gentle circular motion.

Frankincense 100% Pure & Natural Essential Oil BOTANICAL NAME Boswellia carterii

Frankincense grows as a short shrub, about 3-7 meters (10-23 feet) with an abundance of

leaves and blossoms with white or pale pink flowers. Olibanum is an aromatic resin obtained from the tree Boswellia thurifera or B. sacra, B.

carterii (Burseraceae). It is used in incense as well as in perfumes. Frankincense is tapped from Boswellia trees through slashing the bark and allowing the

exuded resins to harden. Tapping is done 2 to 3 times a year with the final taps producing

the best resin due to its higher aromatic terpenes, sesquiterpenes and diterpenes content. Egyptian frankincense is said to be the best in the world, although quality resin is also

produced in Ethiopia, Yemen and Somalia. There is a large amount of enhanced frankincense available on the market. (Enhanced ~ perfume added to make it appear stronger)

SCENT: The essential oil has a warm, rich smell with a tang of lemon and woody camphor. It

is relaxing, uplifting calming and mildly antiseptic.

USES:

Massage, inhalation. Add a few drops to a massage oil to warm, relax and restore an overworked or over-stressed body. Massage on the scalp and temples to relieve tension

Frankincense is used in perfumery and aromatherapy. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dry resin. The smell of the olibanum smoke is due to the products of

pyrolysis. Frankincense was lavishly used in religious rites. According to the Bible's Gospel of

Matthew 2:11, gold, frankincense and myrrh were among the gifts to Jesus by the magi 'from out of the east'. The growth of Christianity depressed the market for frankincense during the

fourth century CE. Desertification made the caravan routes across the Rub al Khali or 'Empty Quarter' of Arabia more difficult. Additionally, increased raiding by the nomadic Parthians in

the Near East caused the frankincense trade to dry up after about 300 CE.

The lost city of Ubar, sometimes identified with Irem in what is now Oman, is believed to have been a centre of the frankincense trade along the recently rediscovered 'Incense Road'.

Ubar was rediscovered in the early 1990s and is now under archaeological excavation.

CAUTIONS: Frankincense is perfectly safe for home as long as it is diluted before

application. As with all essentials, do not use on cats, caged birds or reptiles.

non-irritant and generally non-sensitizing. It can cause sensitivity in some people and due to the fact that it balances the hormonal system, it should be avoided during pregnancy. As

with all essential oils & perfumes, do not use on or near cats, reptiles, or caged

birds as they can be toxic. They can be used on dogs and nags if properly administered.

The plant is said to originate from India, China and Java, but is also native to Africa and the West Indies. It is believed that Ginger was brought to Europe between the 10th and 15th

ancient times; it is recorded specifically in both Sanskrit and Chinese texts. It is also mentioned in literature from the Greeks, Romans, and Arabians.

CAUTIONS: Ginger can irritate sensitive skin and is photo-toxic. Sun exposure is

to be avoided after application. As with all essential oils and perfumes, do not use

The grapefruit tree was originally from Asia. It is now grown and harvested in the United

SCENT: Grapefruit white and pink essential oil has a fresh, slightly bitter citrus scent that is

Grapefruit (Pink or White) essential oil is believed by Aromatherapists to be a spiritual up-

lifter, and to ease muscle fatigue and stiffness. It is also a purifier of congested, oily and acne

prone skin. Grapefruit oil is also sometimes added to creams and lotions as a natural toner, and in some circles it is believed to promote hair growth though there is not any medical

documentation verifying this recently there have been claims that it considerably increases the metabolic rate & therefore aids weight loss. It is also great used in a mop bucket to

freshen & cleanse areas. We use it especially in our teen skin blends where acne or spots are

present. We prefer the pink because of the colour, if you don’t want an orange tinge to your products, use the white.

BLENDS WELL WITH

Grapefruit blends well with other members of the citrus family, rosemary, cypress, lavender,

geranium, cardamom and generally most spice oils. Very nice with sage to aid meditation.

HISTORY:

The differences between the White and Pink Grapefruit are minor. The difference in cost is

simply an example of supply and demand; there is more pink grapefruit produced because it

is sweeter than the white variety.

Jasmine Grandiflorum is a beautiful plant; its flowers bloom in the early dawn as opposed to Jasmine Sambac that blooms in the evening.

SCENT: Jasmine Grandiflorum has a smooth, extremely intense floral smell that is both

sweet and lingering. However some consider Jasmine to be reminiscent of cat pee.

Jasmine Grandiflorum generally works with all oils. It helps to round out scents, and tends to

work particularly well with other aphrodisiac oils (sandalwood and Ylang Ylang for example)

HISTORY:

Since ancient times, Jasmine has been referred to as the King of oils (Rose is the Queen).

Apparently this is because Jasmine is the most masculine of all the floral oils. It is also

interesting to note that it takes 8,000 carefully hand-picked blossoms to produce 1 gram (about 1 ml.) of Jasmine Absolute.

JUNIPER

Lavender grows to about 1 meter in height and produces long thin purple- blue flowers. The

entire plant is covered with oil glands, which are in the star shaped hairs that cover the plant.

SCENT: Floral, herbaceous, fresh with balsamic woody undertone. STRENGTH OF AROMA: Strong

NOTE: Top USES:

These include as an analgesic, anti-depressant, antiseptic, calming, deodorant, insecticide,

sedative. Lavender 40/42 is often the Lavender oil of choice for applications in soaps, candles, perfumes, and cosmetics. The reason is that the 40 – 42 refers to the

standardization of both Linalool and Linalyl acetate resulting in a very consistent floral scent. We use in blends for skin repair and also as a relaxant. Contrary to popular belief it can

actually cause a headache if over used rather than treat one. We have found it extremely

beneficial when applied directly to burns or scalds for reducing the pain and also repairing the scarring. A descent grade of lavender should be used though. We don’t use a carrier with it

for burns as the carrier oil absorbs the heat from the burn and will fry the burn some more, if that makes sense.

We have found blended with jojoba and rosehip, its and excellent scar repair blend.

HISTORY: The use of Lavender has been in well documented use for over 2,500 years. In ancient times

it was used for mummification and perfume by the Egyptians, Phoenicians, and all the

peoples of Arabia. Romans used lavender oils for bathing, cooking, and scenting the air, and they most likely

gave it the Latin root name (either lavare-to wash or livendula- livid or bluish) from which we derive the modern name. Roman males anointed themselves heavily with scents, lavender

among them, at the baths and it is only in today's modern world that Lavender has come to

be seen more as a female scent. First domesticated by the Arabians, Lavender spread across Europe from Greece. Around 600

BC Lavender may have come from the Greek Hyeres Islands into France and is now common

in all of France, Spain, Italy and England.

Amusingly, it is not native to the UK and the 'English' lavender varieties were not locally developed in England but rather introduced in the 1600s right around the time the first

Lavender plants were making their way to the Americas. In Mediaeval and Renaissance

Europe the washing women were known as "lavenders" and they used the plant to scent drawers and dried the laundry on lavender bushes. Also during this time lavender was grown

in infirmary gardens along with many other medicinal herbs by monks. According to the German nun Hildegard of Bingen who lived from 1098-1179, Lavender "water", a decoction of

vodka, gin, or brandy mixed with lavender, is the best panacea for migraine headaches.

During the Great Plague in London in 1665, people fastened a bunch of lavender to each wrist in the belief it would protect them against the deadly disease. Furthermore, grave-

robbers were known to wash in Four Thieves Vinegar, which contained lavender, after doing their dirty work. They rarely contracted the disease. In 16th century France, Lavender was

also used to resist infection. For example, glove-makers, who were licensed to perfume their wares with Lavender, seemed to resist cholera which was so prevalent at that time.

It is a strong antiseptic and bactericidal properties mean it has been used in Indian medicine for thousands of years to fight infectious diseases and fevers. As part of a traditional Indian

medicine, Ayurveda, lemongrass was used for soothing fevers and various illnesses. It is a great 'tonic' because of its stimulating effect on the whole system. It seems to have a

sedative effect on the central nervous system. This oil will also deodorize quite naturally and

is very effective with sweaty feet, as it seems to help balance the oil production in the feet.

HISTORY: Cymbopogon includes more than 30 perennial tropical grass species with mostly lemon scented foliage. Lemongrass is cultivated for the edible stem and for the essential oil.

It is native to India and is now heavily grown and oil produced in the West Indies, Africa, and

parts of tropical Asia. It is used as flavouring for food, alcoholic and soft drinks, a compound in soaps, detergents,

perfumes, and cosmetics. The fresh leaves have been traditionally used in Thai, Vietnamese and Caribbean cooking for many years. The herb is frequently used in curries as well as in

seafood soups. The light lemon flavour of this grass blends well with garlic, chillies, and cilantro. This is a very pungent herb and is normally used in small amounts. It is also used to

make herbal teas.

USES:

Used mainly as a citrus additive in men's toiletries, the sweet citrus peel smell is antiseptic, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and is a good warming stimulant and tonic.

In aromatherapy it is useful for greasy skin, varicose veins, arthritis, rheumatism, poor

circulation, cellulite, breathing problems, colds, flu, fever, or infection. It is good for a warming friction massage, or diluted and rubbed into the chest for colds, or as an astringent

facial. It makes an excellent warming bath in winter or a refreshing energising bath in summer. It can be applied as a poultice for fever or inhaled for any breathing problems or

congestion.
