WHNA YARD SALESaturday, May 5, 8:00 am-12:00 pm

Have you been saving old furniture and kids’ clothing for the annual WHNA Yard Sale? Now’s your chance to clean out the basement OR to collect your neighbors’ treasures! Amvets is scheduled to pick up donations afterwards. No rain date is planned. Anyone who wants to participate, text or call Louise Freedman, (804) 477-4064 with Name, Street address, Phone and Email (only street address will be used for advertising). Ads will be placed to promote the event. Volunteers and suggestions welcomed.

SPRING INTO ACTION! WHNA NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP RETURNS MAY 12It’s here again! Our annual neighborhood-wide Spring Clean-Up on Saturday, May 12th starting at 8:00 am. The City of Richmond provides the trucks and drivers, so that WHNA volunteers can follow behind and “hoist in” discarded household furnishings, yard debris, and other items from either in the alley or in the street in front of homes without alleys. We do not accept paint cans, tires, or “heavy” construction materials. We are requesting that volunteers show up at the Bank of America branch at 4704 Forest Hill across from O’Toole’s at 7:30 am on Saturday morning, May 12th. We should finish up no later than noon, if not sooner.

Please email Robert Kelly at [email protected] or call him at 231-0629 to volunteer for the WHNA general clean-up project. Below are general WHNA Clean-Up pick-up guidelines:

• Place all discards at rear of property next to alley. If you have no alley, place discards at street curb in front of your house.

• If you have an old appliance, television, air conditioner, or large item for pick up, please contact Robert Kelly in advance, so that we can arrange to have the special appliance truck arrive at your home on Saturday morning for pick-up. Please make sure that all items are out prior to 7:45 am on Saturday.

• Place all loose discards in a neat pile so that we know that you intend to have it picked up or you can place a note on the pile as notification for pick-up to the WHNA clean-up volunteers.

• If you have significant amounts of household discards and/or brush, we expect you to assist the WHNA volunteers with disposal. Your absence may result in a no pick-up and a later disposal by the city for a fee. If you are going to be out of town and cannot assist the volunteers with the disposal, please contact Robert Kelly to gain a special exemption from our “assist” request.

Again, if you can help, please contact Robert via phone or email message in advance, if possible. Please do not miss this opportunity to spruce up around the house, while assisting with beautifying the neighborhood!

MUSIC IN THE PARK KICKS-OFF MAY 13Pack a picnic, grab a lawn chair and come boogie in the park as Music in the Park returns to Forest Hill Park’s Stone House. There’s a little some-thing for everyone! Please remember that alcoholic beverages are not permitted in city parks.

Holiday DecorAs always, Westover Hills residents celebrated the season with outstanding flair. The judges were impressed by the quality and joy expressed by neighbors who gave their time and effort to create beautiful, bright holiday displays for all of us to enjoy. We congratulate the winners of this year’s contest and thank every homeowner who took time to decorate; the judges thoroughly enjoyed seeing every home in our neighborhood during both day and night on several different dates.

Thank you to outgoing chairperson, Wade Thrift, for spearheading this effort for so many years!

Spring 2018 • Westover Hills Rag • Page 5

The first six years of my life, I grew up in a small neighborhood in Pittsburgh,

not too dissimilar to Westover Hills, called “Squirrel Hill.” My parents only had one car at the time, and typically my dad needed it for his daily commute to work. That meant that my mom, brother, and I got around on foot. I clearly remember walking from the store with them, my brother perched atop a mound of groceries loaded in the stroller with him. We couldn’t go a block without stopping to chat with a neighbor, or popping into a shop that had a fun storefront. I remember the day I was old enough to walk alone to the corner store, Ruggieri’s Market. Ruggieri’s was a neighborhood family business dating back to 1915. The owners and clerks knew every customer by name and you didn’t have to bring cash to make a purchase.

When I moved to Westover Hills seven years ago, I saw the Richmond manifestation of my childhood memories in Squirrel Hill. I imagined that one day there would be a local market where my children would walk to get ice cream and a place to meet with neighbors to catch up on life. My passion for making our merchant’s area a vital and thriving business district is entirely driven by this vision. And while the Westover Hills shopping area hasn’t quite lived up to my expectations yet, I remain optimistic. We have trendy new restaurants like Little Nickel, right next to neighborhood institutions like O’Toole’s. For the first time in years, we have an energetic committee

ready to undertake the hard work of revitalizing the merchants’ area on Forest Hill Avenue. We have the support of the city administration and our elected officials and we have merchants engaged in the process.

Exciting changes are afoot in our area—just a few nights ago I was having dinner at Little Nickel (my fifth visit since its opening). The place had an hour wait the entire night, people waiting for a table were pressed up against those sitting at the bar, and kids were spilling out of doors and onto the front porch. It was tight quarters, but everyone was in good spirits. As usual, I saw friends from the neighborhood, but what was more exciting is that I ran into a friend who lives in Windsor Farms. She and three of her neighbors ventured over to “our side of the river” to try out Richmond’s hottest new spot. This is precisely why a Merchant’s Committee is so important. We must create more opportunities through our business district to draw in people from across the city, and to showcase all Westover Hills has to offer. I want Richmond’s “best kept secret” to be a secret no more! I don’t want us to be a Carytown or Libbie and Grove; I want to be the “Walks at Westover” a place beyond compare.

Going into my second year as WHNA’s President, I am redoubling

President’s Columnby Sarah Abubaker

my efforts to create a vibrant and thriving business district in our neighborhood. I am joined by a small but dedicated WHNA Merchants’ Committee, led by Bruce Gould, who has seen commerce in our area wax and wane over the last thirty years. However, we cannot do this alone! We need the neighborhood to continue to rally around our local merchants like Zata, O’Toole’s, Maldini’s and Outpost. We need residents to speak up when they see something that looks wrong, like overflowing dumpsters or potholes; and we need our merchants to engage in the process, and share their priorities, and how we can best support them. We will only succeed if we work hand-in-hand. If you have any interest in joining the Merchants Committee, or have any suggestions, please contact me or Bruce.

We thought we would kick-off this revitalization effort with a fun project. If you have pictures, stories or memories of merchants who have occupied our commercial area on both sides of Forest Hill Avenue between Prince Arthur Road and Prince George Road/W. 47th Street and the first few blocks of Westover Hills Boulevard on either side of Forest Hill Avenue, please email me at [email protected] or Bruce at [email protected]. n

River and Trail Festival at Good Shepherd Episcopal SchoolMark your calendars for May 12th from 10:00 am-2:00 pm, Good Shepherd Episcopal School’s upcoming River and Trail Festival (formerly Community Bike Bash) will celebrate all things outdoors afforded by our beautiful Forest Hill Park and James River Park System. This year the festival will again showcase mountain bikes, local biking experts, and bike-related non-profits, but it will also include river sports, as well as conservation organizations, local food by Kitchenette, music by Tin Can Fish Band, and local artists. Most importantly, this event will benefit the Richmond Cycling Corp, a non-profit organization which creates and coaches cycling teams for youth living in Richmond’s housing projects.

This event was created as part of Good Shepherd’s increased focus on place-

based education and environmental stewardship. Place-based education is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, technology, and other subjects across the curriculum. GSES has initiated phase one of the “place-based” curriculum through Outdoor Education with its youngest students, and next year seeks to extend it to the entire K-8 population. Ultimately, GSES hopes to become a resource to Richmond City Public Schools.

If you have questions about the River and Trail Festival or wish to set up a tour of Good Shepherd Episcopal School, contact Elizabeth Coleman at [email protected] or (804) 231-1452. Hope to see you on May 12th! n

Isn’t it great to see new and exciting businesses opening along the Forest Hill Ave-Westover Hills Blvd corridor? With Little Nickel already hopping every night and new businesses working to open soon on both sides of the street (Happy Empanada, yum!). Thanks to Sarah Abubaker, Bruce Gould and other neighborhood leaders who are working to reignite the merchants association in this area. My office will continue to work with zoning, code enforcement and the Department of Public Works to help ensure that the corridor is well maintained. I am excited to see this area continue to grow.

Speaking of growth, the city has recently launched Richmond 300 to update our master plan. The plan developed over the next two years will guide our growth through the city’s 300th anniversary in 2037. Our planning department presented a high-level overview of this plan at the March WHNA meeting and will continue to engage the public through the process. To learn more and get involved please visit Richmond300.com.

As Winter turns to Spring, my office is gearing up for budget season! This is a season of hard work, long meetings and probably a few late nights, but I am excited to work collaboratively with my colleagues and the mayor to set a course for next year that continues

to move our city forward. If you would like to share your thoughts on the city budget or any other priorities please do not hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected] or give me a call at 646-5646.

I always enjoy visiting with the Westover Hills Neighborhood Association each month at Cafe Zata and I hope to see you at a meeting soon. Also, please mark your calendars for my next quarterly 4th District Meeting on June 14th at Huguenot Community Center at 6:00 pm. n

I am happy to report that the long-awaited Forest Hill Lake dredging

project is now complete. Crews worked through December and

January to cleanout the forebays that were installed during the lake

reconstruction project a decade ago. I will continue to work with DPU

and Parks to make sure that our lake is clean and well-maintained.
