WELCOME TO YOUR DECEMBER ISSUE OF SO

Its Christmas time, theres no need to be afraid yes, they might be Sir Bobs words, but this month Im definitely echoing his sentiment. As the big day draws closer and panic (and by panic, I mean festive joy) sets in, in this issue weve got everything you need to have a cracking Christmas.

If, like me you dread wrapping the presents, then help is on hand! Weve spoken to the experts at Hoopers to find out how they tackle even the trickiest shaped gifts (pg 14). Its refreshing to know that they still get paper cuts, although I doubt all of their presents end up with cat hair stuck to the Sellotape like mine do

Decorating the house for Christmas is one of my favourite parts of the festivities, but imagine having to dress an entire manor, complete with 22ft tree like the housekeeping team at Ightham Mote do (pg 180). However, if you need some inspiration, head to page 173 where weve rounded up some of our favourite festive decorations you can get your hands on to give your home some sparkle.

Speaking of sparkle, tis the season to party, and this can only mean one thinga new outfit. Forget buying presents for your nearest and dearest, what you really need is one of the dazzling dresses weve picked out on page 53. Plus, Ive tried and tested some of the best foundations on the market (pg 63) so you can be party ready from head to shoe.

The gorgeous Nigella Lawson is back on our screens this Christmas, so in this issue we take a look at her recent successes both in and out of the kitchen (pg 41) while our very own celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager gives us a festive recipe on page 129.I hope you all have a very merry Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you in 2016. Mind how you go with those paper cuts

CALL FOR CROSSINGSafety on the roads in Tunbridge Wells has been called into question by Francesca Winterflood of Calverley Park Garden, in particular, the lack of pedestrian crossings surrounding the roundabout at Lansdowne Road, Calverley Road and Crescent Road. Having been told by Kent County Council that there isnt enough money for new crossings, Mrs Winterflood said her husband is willing to pay for the crossing himself. It could cost up to 68,000.

POPPY POWERThe Loft Room Vintage Workshops Emma Spink put Brenchley on the map by hand-crafting hundreds of crocheted poppies for Remembrance. They quickly sold out, with locals phoning up to reserve their poppies in advance to be sure they didnt miss out. Their target was to reach 500, but they managed to raise a total of 802 for The Royal British Legion. Im so pleased to have raised so much, says Miss Spink. Its a charity very close to my heart. If people wear them in future years, I do ask them to donate to the paper poppy sellers.

DEER DANGERDrivers are demanding better signage, after yet another deer incident on the busy A267 at Frant. The road was the focus of concern after a car collided with an unsuspecting deer last month. Otherwise known as Frant Road, the A267 runs from Tunbridge Wells through to Mark

Cross, and divides countryside where there are roaming deer. There were cars backed all the way up the hill, says Samantha Holland, a local resident and witness to the event. Someone covered the deers head to try to calm it down because it was clearly injured and distressed. I see this on Frant Road all the time; theres no deer warning signs for drivers.

RETAIL RUBBISHRoyal Victoria Place shopping centre, the retail hub of Tunbridge Wells, has temporarily removed several public rubbish bins following the implementation of heightened security awareness. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in France, public buildings and services have been advised to strengthen their security measures. We have reviewed our security procedures, comments shopping centre manager, Nicky Blanchard. Bins have been removed from the malls to ensure the safety and welfare of our customers. Miss Blanchard insisted that the threat level has not increased, but necessary precautions are being taken.

BUSINESS AMBASSADORThe Federation of Small Businesses saw the appointment of West Kent ambassador, Lorraine Pargeter. Based in Tunbridge Wells, Mrs Pargeter is a public relations expert who is currently acting as a consultant to Balfour Beatty, the road builders responsible for developing the A21. As ambassador, the role will mean identifying policy issues in the West Kent region and raising them with the Federation of Small Businesses. Mrs Pargeter felt really honoured to act as ambassador, and explains the role consists of being the first point of contact for members to go to if they have a business issue.

FOOTBALL FANTASYEleven year old Edward Bowyer of Tunbridge Wells had the best day ever last month when he led his favourite football team on to the Emirates pitch at the North London derby. Selected at random from over 34,000 youngsters, Edward was given the once in a lifetime opportunity to be mascot for Arsenal in their game against Tottenham. It was a dream come true, says the Junior Gunners mother, Julia Bowyer. The day couldnt have been more special. Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker and manager Arsne Wenger were among the top names the youngster met that day.

  • FIREWORKS FANATICI would like to congratulate Dunorlan Park on yet another successful fireworks display! I have taken my family to see the fireworks for as long as Ive lived here and they never let us down. The budget they spend on the pyrotechnics must be extensive because they never scrimp on variety or creativity. The only thing I would say is that the most trodden paths get so muddy, perhaps next

year they could put down some kind of matting to make it less slippery? JESSICA ROBINSON, Hawkenbury Ed: A sparkling review, looks like it went off with a bang!

BACKING THE MUSICI was watching a film on TV the other day called Pitch Perfect. The story is set at an American university and the main characters compete in an a cappella championship, creating fantastic music using just their mouths (with no backing tracks). And it got me thinking Tunbridge Wells should host its own a cappellathon!SALLY KHAN, SouthboroughEd: Sounds like youve just pitched the perfect idea Sally!

CLEANING UPI just wanted to write in and sing the praises of two local people who regularly give up their time to tidy up the countryside. Sometimes as often as four times a month, I have seen Vivienne and Richard, of Bells Yew Green, in their high-visibility vests picking up litter in and around the village. It is so reassuring to know that there are local heroes, like these two, who still care enough about our local area to sacrifice their spare time to make it better for everyone. Keep up the good work! ROBYN RHODES, Bells Yew GreenEd: Litter-ally heart-warming!

BREAKING THE ICEI came across Hatties rant in the November issue about the disgusteds of Tunbridge Wells, and I happen to agree with her wholeheartedly. I dont get desperately excited about Christmas myself, but I love it when the ice rink is set up in Calverley Park! I think its great to see some excitement brought to the town rather than just the usual throngs of stony-faced shoppers. Do people have nothing better to do with their time than to oppose new and interesting ideas? Who doesnt like ferris wheels and bumper cars?TONY RADSHAW, Tunbridge WellsEd: A frosty reaction to the protesters it seems

COMPASSION FOR PARISI dont know anyone directly affected by the Friday 13th terrorist attacks in Paris but I find it very hard to watch the news footage nonetheless. I wanted to express my deepest sympathy to all those families in France who have lost loved ones because of these mindless acts of violence. I cant understand how people can intentionally cause each other harm this way and I just pray it doesnt happen again. I dont normally express my opinions but I felt compelled to say something on this occasion. I f, like us, you find wrapping your Christmas gifts more stressful than shopping for them, then its good to

know that help is on hand. Rather

than hiring elves to get creative with

the Sellotape and bows, Hoopers have

their own team who are trained to

wrap even the trickiest of presents.

    Between them, Martin Brockbank, the

    stores visual merchandising manager

    and visual merchandisers Lydia Card

and Rosemary Goacher have almost 40

years of experience in making the

    store look festive and getting

    innovative with the wrapping paper.

We go behind the scenes to find out

how they make the magic happen

When do you start preparing for Christmas at the store, and whats involved in the preparations? We start thinking about Christmas window and in-store themes in about May or June. We have to come up with ideas, source props and manufacturers and also do lots of planning.

What time does your day at work begin? We work store opening hours, so thats Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm and Sunday 10.30am to 4pm.

What else do you do other than gift wrapping over the festive season? As visual merchandisers in Hoopers, gift wrap is an extra job we do to support the store, so we also spend our time making sure that all the displays throughout the store are looking good at all times.

Do you have to undertake any wrapping training?Training is key, so that our gift wrapping is consistent. Training is mainly so that everyone who does gift wrap is doing it the same way.

What wrapping techniques do you learn? We use boxes whenever possible, then measure paper so that it covers box on all sides, with some to fold over. Then we put goods into the box; clothing is wrapped in tissue and if the goods are smaller than the box we add extra tissue to stop movement. We then wrap paper around the box, with a fold on the outside edge to

give neat finish, and secure with small piece of tape. We fold each end to look like envelope and secure with tape. Then, we wrap ribbon around box, with a twist where bow is to go, and make sure rest of ribbon is flat. Lastly we tie the bow and attach the gift tag.

How long does it take to wrap a gift? On average it takes five to 10 minutes, depending on the size of the present we try and use boxes as this makes wrapping easier.

How many gifts do you wrap a day?Lots! We have a free gift wrap service through December. We are especially busy during our Gala Day, which is December 3 and we get busier the closer it gets to Christmas.

Are there any tricky shaped gifts that require a bit of extra thought?Any unusual shape gift we try to put into a gift box, but we do have a technique for cylindrical items, by cutting and folding.

Do you ever sustain wrapping related injuries? We do get paper cuts and sore fingers from folding and creasing edges of paper!

When it comes to wrapping your own presents at Christmas, do you lose enthusiasm? As creative people we always take a pride in wrapping all presents, family, friends or customers. It does mean that we quite often get asked to wrap though, and not just at Christmas

anonymous letters and contact details must be supplied, but if youd prefer not to be named in print, please make this preference clear.

There are many things that displease me about winter. I despise getting up in the dark and getting home in the dark. I loathe having to de-ice my car in the mornings, wear three jumpers just to keep

warm and pretend to enjoy The Pogues playing relentlessly on the radio. But, much more than all of the above, I hate winter pedestrians.

I dont know why, but as soon as darkness descends on our streetlight free country roads, people deem it a good idea to walk along them. In July, strolling along at 5pm is fine. In December it is not. The difference? The complete lack of visibility. You might be able to see the cars hurtling towards you, but we cant see you, usually until its too late.

But we have no choice but to walk along the road, I hear you cry. While this may be the case, you do have a choice over whether or not you can be seen. At least three times a week I come around a bend and just catch sight of some idiot by the roadside, who instead of having the common sense to wear high visibility clothing are adorned in head to toe black.

What is wrong with these people? Do they not value their lives at all? Why do they think that wearing anything other than a full high-vis outfit complete with torch is acceptable? How can they honestly think drivers can see them if theyre traipsing along in black, burgundy, green, blue, or any other dark coloured clothing?

Its only a matter of time before one of these walkers is killed or

seriously injured as a result of their ignorance, but it wont be them held accountable, itll be the driver. People wont sympathise with the poor person behind the wheel who now has to live with this burden, theyll point fingers and say they should have been driving slower. But why should we? I drive to the conditions, so if its icy, wet or foggy then yes, Ill slow down, but the rest of the time I stick to the speed limit, which, on many of these roads is 50 or 60 not an unsafe speed to be travelling at, but certainly not a speed you want to be hit at.

And, while were on the subject, cyclists need to be more aware too. The other day I came so close to one I almost clipped his back wheel, and I had no idea he was there he was wearing all black, had no lights, nothing reflective and wasnt even wearing a helmet. I was so shocked by my near collision and his utter stupidity that I couldnt even shout obscenities through the window at him as I passed.

I have nothing against walkers or cyclists, and enjoy partaking in both activities even during the winter. But, in these rural parts it baffles me that so many people still think theyre invincible, when actually theyre invisible. Im angry at their ignorance, and Ill be even angrier when I read in a local paper that someone has been killed by an unsuspecting driver. I would strongly suggest that, with Christmas coming, you do us all a favour and add a torch and a nice reflective jacket to your wishlist. Or, just stay inside

Why do walkers think theyre invincible rather than invisible, asks Francesca from Bodiam

Grandparents lose contact with grandchildren following family separation and divorceIt is always upsetting to see your children separate from their partners. It is even harder to then be prevented from seeing your grandchildren as a result for no satisfactory reason

    BY MAX BARFORD

In over 50% of marriage or relationship breakdowns where there are children involved, grandparents are often prevented from seeing their grandchildren for no good reason. Unfortunately whats often forgotten is the emotional damage and effect this has on the children, not only as a result of the breakdown of their parents relationship, but being isolated from loving and caring grandparents who could provide them with support and help during such a difficult time and with whom they have a close and loving relationship.

We meet many Grandparents who are often of the view that they have no rights regarding their grandchildren and feel therefore that there is nothing they can do about the situation. This in fact is not the case.

We are frequently asked what rights grandparents have when they have been denied the opportunity to spend time with their grandchildren through no fault of their own. The sad truth is that grandparents do not have an automatic right to seek assistance from the Family Court in this respect. However the Family Court does recognise recognise the invaluable role grandparents play in their grandchildrens lives and there is therefore provision for grandparents to seek permission from the Court to make an application for an order that they are permitted to spend time with their grandchildren. It is very rare that the Court refuse a grandparent contact with their grandchildren and the Court will promote a meaningful and ongoing relationship, unless there is evidence to suggest that it would not be in the childrens best interests to do so.

If the Court are satisfied that it is in the best interests that the children see their grandparents, it will grant permission to make an application for a Child Arrangements Order in the same way a parent would which will ultimately, if successful, set out when the children spend time with their grandparents.

This Child Arrangement Order replaced the old contact Order following new legislation which came into force on the 22nd April 2014. The Order sets out the arrangements regarding when a child or children spend time with their parents or Grandparents. The Order requires the person with whom the children live to allow the child or children

to visit the person or persons referred to in that Order.

This may not only include time during the day, but may also include overnight stays including holidays, and other special occasions, for example birthdays.

If you are successful with your application for a Child Arrangement Order, the Court have power, if satisfied that the person with whom the children live is wilfully refusing to abide by the Order, to punish that person which may, in some circumstances result in imprisonment. The Court can also impose a fine or unpaid work (community service).

If all parties are agreeable it is possible to attend Mediation in order to try and resolve the difficulties without the need to resort to Court intervention. Mediation is a process where a trained Mediator in Family Law meet with the parties together or alone in order to explore whether or not the difficulties between the parties can be resolved and will assist in this process. Normally mediation takes place at regular intervals and can occur over a period of several months.

As well as mediation, there is also the Collaborative process available which is a client centred approach which focuses on finding solutions to family problems using specifically trained collaborative lawyers working on a face to face basis.

The Family Team at Max Barford Solicitors regularly assist grandparents who are

experiencing difficulties in maintaining regular visits with their grandchildren. If you are feeling isolated from your grandchildren as a result of a breakdown in their parents relationship we can advise and assist you with a view to resolving those difficulties whether it be via the Court process or an alternative to the Court. We are more than happy to assist you. If you require further information then please call us on 01892 539379 or email us at [email protected].

ALMOST 50% of all marriages end in divorce and for many it can be the most traumatic time in their lives. Months and sometimes years are spent deciding whether to separate and then, when the decision has been made, it can take an age to pluck up the courage to take action. Emotions run high and delays are usually down to fear of the unknown and what life will be like after the separation. Not to mention how you will cope financially and what youll tell the children.

The truth is, there is no easy way out. However, the actions you take now and the choices you make will have a big impact on your new life. Your future is in your hands. You can choose to be reactive to your situation or you can be proactive and take the lead and put a stop to the fighting, anger and hurt.

Divorce and separation is a life changing event and mistakes can be costly both emotionally and financially and you must be prepared to invest in order to secure your future. To take control you need

information and advice from an experienced and trusted advisor which will allow you to make informed decisions about your future.

My dedicated team are handpicked for their experience working with people who are going through a relationship breakdown. They are all members of Resolution which means that they have the legal experience required to give you the best advice and are committed to solving your problems in a conciliatory way if possible saving you the emotional drain of the legal court battle and the legal fees that go with it. They understand the emotional pressure and stress you are going through and they can help ease the pain and will work with you to achieve the best outcome possible for you to move on with your life.

Our service is confidential, discreet and bespoke to each client and we will never disclose your information to others. Out of hours appointments are available if required.

For a limited period, I am offering a selected number of potential clients an opportunity to meet with one of the family

solicitors in my team for a free initial consultation to discuss the options available. Due to high demand, I am only able to offer 10 free consultations up until 31st January 2016, and I know these will book up quickly.

Choosing the right legal team is key to your emotional and financial future so contact us today to see how we can help you achieve the outcome you want.

As Nigella beams down the camera lens, strolling jauntily through London she says these words to introduce her latest creation Simply Nigella. Her BBC2 show, and accompa-nying book spell the return of one of the nations sweethearts; the self-professed domestic goddess is back, and better than ever, as you can judge from these recent thoughts and comments.

I dont believe its possible to live well without eating well. Of course, this means different things on different days. But, whatever the day, I want food that makes me feel good, not just when Im eating but when Im cooking it too. Simply Nigella is about dishes that do just that; recipes that relax and restore, uplift and enrich. Food Ive enjoyed with family and friends as Ive settled into my new kitchen and where I am in my life right now.

Where Nigella is in her life right now is a far cry from where she was back in 2013 when she last graced the cover of So. That year would be nothing short of tumultuous her marriage to gallery own-er Charles Saatchi publicly crumbled after he was pictured with his hands around her throat, and, after a quickie divorce in July 2013, their whole life was raked through the courts that December when their former cleaners were accused of stealing from them. Allegations of drug use were thrown Nigellas way, personal emails were scrutinised by the world and there were concerns that her career and name would be left in tatters.

For many stars, this would be the case, but not for Nigella. After all, its hard to resist a woman who can make such delicious cakes. And so, what-

ever the campaigns against her, be they smear or otherwise they were quickly quashed. The nation found itself on team Nigella, rooting for her to come through on top. Even Prime Minister David Cameron jumped into the fray, when he admitted in an interview that he was on team Nigella, calling her a very funny and warm person.

Nigellas funny and warm personality is certainly whats won her a legion of fans. Since her first book How To Eat was published in 1998, the nation has fervently followed the making of Nigella through her kitchen, books and TV shows. But, unlike other chefs, Nigella has never professed to be a professional. Or, a chef for that matter.

I cant stand a manicured plate, a thoughtfully placed arrangement, form over content, concept over taste. I want everything to tumble out in the bowl and just be resplendent and welcoming as it is. Perhaps messiness is not quite the right term for my approach: haphazard may sum it up more neatly.

Its hard to believe now that Nigella wasnt always passionate about food. With 10 books on eating under her belt and international fame as a cook, it may come as a surprise that growing up, meals werent something she relished.

I had quite the wrong start for a future food-ob-sessive: I absolutely loathed eating as a child. Or perhaps more accurately, it was mealtimes I hated. And there werent, then, occasions for eating outside mealtimes or at least not in my home. My earliest memories of food are of sitting at the table, being told I had to eat everything on my plate.

THE RETURN OF THE GODDESSShes back in our kitchens and in our hearts its the return of Nigella, and this Christmas shes bringing a slice of simplicity to the dinner table

From the practically saintly gluten and dairy free date and marmalade Christmas cake, to the warming

cider and five spice Bundt cake, its good to hear that despite looking after her body, shes still partial

    to a slice of sponge

While Nigella hasnt been prolific in the media for the past couple of years, behind the scenes shes been working hard on her return. 2013 saw her head to America for The Taste which ran for two series, raking in 7million viewers in its prime. But, it was the announcement that she was returning to BBC2 for the first time in three years and releasing her first book since Nigellissima that marked the homecoming of the Domestic Goddess. From the release of her first book, Nigella has always declared that her cooking reflects her life state at that time.

My books have always been snapshots of where I am at the time: through food I have charted the stages and phases of my life; for me, the recipe is a highly charged autobiographical form.

If How to Eat in 1998 was about Nigella accept-ing her past and embracing motherhood, then Simply Nigella is very much about appreciating the modest things in life. From recipes for avocado on toast, to warm spiced cauliflower and chickpea salad with pomegranate seed, these dishes are, for the most part, (save the indulgent dark and sumptuous chocolate cake) wholesome, and, dare we say it, healthy. Unlike Nigellas previous efforts, Simply sees the use of ingredients such as chia seeds, flaxseed and matcha. So has she jumped on the current clean eating bandwagon and ditched all of her former indulgent delights?

I think of myself as someone who resists fads in food, but I have to admit that such protestations might be looking a little puny. I have always been an eclectic cook, mixing the comfort of the familiar with the exuberance of the new, and believing in balance. I dont have the patience, skill or desire for complicated food, and I need what I cook to make me feel as happy when I cook it as when I eat it. The food Im cooking now is simply the food I want to eat. It doesnt have a theme, but then life doesnt have a theme.

Nigella has long been famed for her curves, but recent years have seen these somewhat diminish. Whether this is due to private stresses or her nutri-tious concoctions remains to be seen, but, refresh-ingly the 55-year-old doesnt believe in dieting.

I have never been on a diet to try to lose weight. I feel like I havent lost weight, but Im possibly in better shape. I am doing a rather slow form of yoga now called Iyengar. As you get on in life, you value feeling well as opposed to looking well. Yoga certainly makes you feel great, and you want to carry on feeling great. I just do a bit in a very slow way. Sometimes, lying down!

With Christmas around the corner, and a TV special called Simply Nigella Christmas, due to air over the festive season, surely Nigella will be in-dulging? Her new book contains a variety of festive offerings, from the practically saintly gluten and

dairy free date and marmalade Christmas cake, to the warming cider and five spice Bundt cake, so its good to hear that despite looking after her body, shes still partial to a slice of sponge.

My body is a finely tuned instrument, I can tell what I want to be eating. I think [people] eat too much sugar because they are constantly trying to deny it, and then go on a binge. But if you have a perfectly normal, balanced diet nothing terrible is going to happen to you if you had a slice of cake on Saturday nightI love kale and Im an avocado obsessive. But life is about balance, its not about being smug. You dont eat things because you think theyre good for you.

Whether Nigella has been portrayed as the victim or the survivor over the past few years remains undecided perhaps it is the case that she is both, although she doesnt see it that way. The media may have been quick to define her as the destroyed party, but in her eyes, that is, and was never the case. Just as she believes her recipes reflect her life state, she also advocates that the ability to cook is a power in itself.

I know this is not true for everyone, but I feel that cooking is a way of strengthening oneself: not being able to feed oneself to me feels like a state

of victimhood; being able to sustain oneself is the skill of the survivor. And I am no victim, but very much a survivor! Everyone should be, or make sure they become one.

As we head into the festive season, and beyond into 2016, Nigella is embracing the here and now. Shes back where she belongs on our bookshelves, TV screens and in our kitchens, as we attempt to make our salads, cakes and even avocado on toast look half as good as hers does. And,

if we could have a pinch of her attitude and a sprinkle of her vivacity, that would also do, too.

This is what Simply Nigella says, and it is an aptly simple message: heres where I am; here is my food: this is what my life tastes like right now. And its tasting pretty good to me.

PERSONAL STYLIST CATHERINE DE CRVECOEUR REVEALS HOW TO BRING THE LATEST TRENDS TO YOUR DECEMBER WARDROBE

    FASHION INSIDER

For a good part of my life, power dressing for women involved shoulder pads, precise tailoring and towering

heels. It was these key features to a womens outfi t that gave her a chance to show she meant business and exert her authority. However this past season has seen a new movement towards a more relaxed, practical yet beautifully crafted wardrobe. This latest shift in fashion has allowed women to communicate their own confi dence through a more laid back, fuss-free style of clothing. Starting with shoes, heels are now becoming more of

an occasion accessory whereas fl ats are

    becoming the ultimate

must-have to a stylish outfi t. This is particularly good news for those of you who struggle with heels another good reason for me to recommend you embrace this trend, which I predict will stick around for a while. Make the most of it by investing in a pair of gorgeous brogues like these ones from the Best of British Brogue range at Marks and Spencer for 165.

Another signifi cant move in power dressing is the fl uid femininity of garments combined with rich textures, cuts and colours. From quality knits to leather bags, fl owing trousers and silk tunics, you will fi nd that you have an abundance of choice from designers to our favourite high street shops to create unique looks for your casual as well as work wardrobe needs. Another trend in power dressing which might appeal to you depending on where you see your own style fi tting in amongst the main trends is the androgynous look. With buttoned up shirts, muted coloured jumpers and some masculine tailoring thrown into the mix, this can be another powerful yet relaxed way to make a style statement. So with fashion turning its attention to a vast array of different style personalities, where do you think your style best fi ts in: are you a minimalist, an eccentric, a debutant, a boho or a mixture of the above?

    Christopher Bailey, the chief creative

    and chief executive officer of

Burberry, and Victoria Beckham have been appointed the first patrons to the annual fashion students showcase, Graduate fashion week. Graduate fashion week takes place in London in June and is now in its 25th year. Bailey himself is a GFW success story, having won the gold award when he showcased in 1991. Graduate fashion week is an incredibly valuable platform because it provides graduates with vital recognition for their talent, and in so doing it can become the catalyst to start an exciting career path, he says. That was certainly my experience, and I have seen it do the same for many others since.

Future FashionIn exciting news for budding British designers, Boden and the British Fashion Council (BFC) have announced the launch of Future British, a new collaboration that will support British designers as they build their businesses in the fashion arena.

Over 12 months, the designers selected to participate in Future British will benefit from Bodens expertise. As well as financial support, they will receive mentoring in all areas key to building a global brand, including product development, brand identity, PR and marketing.

Im thrilled to announce our collaboration with the BFC to support start-up designer brands in Britain. says Johnnie Boden.

The aim of Future British is to give these individuals the opportunity to succeed as the next big clothing brand.

A HELPING HANDIf youre hitting Londons West End to pick up some gifts, then dont struggle around the city laden with bags. A new service called Dropit has been launched a hands-free shopping experience which allows you to buy items in stores and have them delivered in one go to your home no matter where you live in the UK. Various retailers offer the service, which can be purchased via an app, and bags can even be delivered the same day. Sounds like the perfect excuse to squeeze in a few extra gifts for yourself, too

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT

    YOUR BACKGROUND, AND HOW

    YOU GOT INTO STYLING?

I have always understood how clothes can make you feel, and can vividly remember my Dad giving me and my twin sister, aged four and a half, a dress with a tiny brown and white checked skirt, with appliqud vegetables on it and I loved it. Everyone in our family either sewed or knitted and my uncles were tailors in Savile Row.

Having always wanted to have a career that helped people, and unable to be a nurse due to a fainting reaction to blood and needles, it was only a matter of time, about 45 years to be precise, when I found my niche in the fashion/ styling world as a personal style coach. I trained at The London College of Fashion then started Style Me Confident Ltd.

SO WHAT IS THE WARDROBE DIET?

The Wardrobe DietTM empowers you to throw away your scales, and let your clothes guide you. If they feel too tight, eat less cake, and if a tad loose, then you can eat more cake! You dont need to waste any more time starving yourself, stressing about what to wear and feeling frumpy.

    HOW DOES IT WORK?

It works because you use your clothes instead of scales. If your clothes feel too tight apply the brakes.

We show you how to build up a collection of clothes that flatter you, are comfortable and up to date and make you look and feel fabulous. You can easily mix and match them to make day to day, smart /casual outfits or any outfit required for your lifestyle.

So its your clothes that motivate you to stay the same size, then they always fit and you can dress without stress, every day. The money you save can buy you organic cake and sought-after clothes!

My mission is to bring The Wardrobe DietTM to as many women as possible and change their relationship with their bodies and clothes to help them buy less, wear more and always look and feel fabulous in whatever size they feel happy with.

    CAN IT APPLY TO EVERYBODY?

Yes and they can be any age, any shape and any size. Everybody on The Wardrobe DietTM will: save time (you always have something and know how to wear it) save heartache (no clothes with the label still on/ fashion disasters/ thinspiration reminders) and

save money, because we show you how to shop effectively, mix and match what you have and upcycle to breathe new life into current items to get the most value out of them.

The key is to decide on the ideal size for you, then stick to it using your clothes as a guide. Its about making yourself a priority, becoming empowered to carry it through and then benefits are far reaching. You are happier, healthier and this positivity touches everyone and everything in your life.

DOES THE THEORY NEED TO BE

ADAPTED IN ANY WAY FOR THE

Thats a tough one, as the festive season is all about eating and drinking and being merry! However, if last years LBD doesnt fit and you havent time to search for another one, then applying the principles of The Wardrobe DietTM, you can eat less cake a few weeks before!

PARTY PREPIf youre looking for a way to stave off that post-Christmas hangover, then forget a morning fry-up as a cure. Professor James Schaefer, a researcher in alcohol metabolism has revealed that in order to avoid the effects of a heavy night, we should be eating greasy food prior to drinking. He claims that fatty foods grease the lining of the stomach and intestines, meaning alcohol is absorbed slower. He also recommends eating pizza and chorizo in a bid to ward off the ill-effects of drinking.

all you see is fresh, smooth, even skin.

WE SAY Id heard nothing but good things

about this foundation, so I was keen to try it for

myself. Its easy to apply and gives great

coverage, but I found that after a few hours I

needed to touch up a bit. Id recommend

setting with powder for a really fl awless fi nish.

    3 WEDNESDAY

    BAREMINERALSBlemish remedy foundation, 26

THEY SAY Gentle yet effective, this non-

    drying, mineral-powered foundation

    conceals imperfections and helps reduce

the appearance of imperfections for clearer-

    looking skin.

WE SAY Im usually sceptical about mineral

foundations and their staying power, but

this is a little pot of wonder. Not only did it

last all day, any blemishes I did have quickly

disappeared. Its not heavy in its coverage,

but it did give a really nice, even fi nish.

    4 THURSDAY

ELIZABETH ARDENFlawless fi nish perfectly satin 24hr

    makeup, 29

THEY SAY Offering the skin a medium to

full coverage of colour-true make up that

will last for 24 hours. Boasting time release

technology, the foundation works to detect

the sebum levels in the skin and it helps to

control the amount of excess oils produced

by your skin throughout the day.

WE SAY I really liked this foundation as

a lighter option it gives a natural fi nish

and fresh glow, so its great for everyday

wear. While I wouldnt say it lasted 24

hours, it did stay put most of the day,

    even withstanding a heavy

    lunchtime downpour.

fi nd the foundation can be a little heavy for

everyday wear. The matchmaster could be a

game changer though it gives great, even

coverage but is moisturising too. And, it lasts

all day without the need for any touch-ups

    great for a Friday night!
