OUR MONTHLY LOOK AT SOME OF THE LOCAL STORIES MAKING THE HEADLINES

    NEWS...Wealden

SCREEN DREAMSTravelling to Ashford or Maidstone to catch the latest blockbuster could soon be a thing of the

past for Tenterden residents. Proposals are underway for a Kino-style cinema in the town, which

will be situated in the town hall. If you talk to local residents, the idea is very well received, says

Architect Siggi Nep who has designed the plans for a boutique cinema. This is an opportune

time for the town council to make use of its assets. They have a fantastic building in the town hall

which is under-utilised. The proposed cinema would be part of the town halls 750,000 revamp

plans, but the council has not yet confirmed what will go into the building.

PLUMPKIN A student at the Bethany School in

Goudhurst has come top of a school grown

your own competition, by producing a

    pumpkin weighing a whopping 70kg (154lbs).

Year 10 pupil Cameron Manchester won

first prize after the fruit, which had been

growing for seven months, dwarfed the

    other entries. Camerons winning

pumpkin scored high in all categories,

coming in at 70kg in weight, 208cm

circumference and also with a brilliant

diary that showed his dedication to the

whole process, says a spokesperson for

the school. The pumpkins were given an

overall score, being marked on colour,

    shape, texture, circumference and weight.

NOT STOPPING Some students in the Weald have a genuine

excuse for being late for class because they

cant get on the school buses. Parents of

Cranbrook School students have been up in

arms because the Arriva number 5 bus, which

serves villages like Hawkhurst and Staplehurst,

is often so overcrowded in the mornings that

schoolchildren are unable to get on.

If the bus service says there will be a bus

they should be providing that service, not

cancelling them and leaving children standing

at bus stops, says a spokesperson for

Cranbrook School. Meetings have been called

with Arriva to try and resolve the situation,

which is also causing issues for children

trying to get home in the evenings.

WILD THINGMost 90-year-olds would probably celebrate

their birthday with a slice of cake and a cup

of tea, but not Daphne Wilson from Northiam.

The outgoing OAP can often be spotted riding

through the village on her white bicycle, so

for her birthday she decided to rock out by

taking a trip on a Harley Davidson alongside

a Hells Angel. Daphne rejected the idea of a

hot air balloon ride, calling it too tame and

instead opted for a more thrilling experience.

AGATHA AUCTIONAn Agatha Christie fan who bought a chest

belonging to the author was shocked to

discover family jewels inside and even more

surprised when the gems raised nearly

50,000 at auction. Jennifer Grant from

Nutley, near Uckfield bought the trunk for

100 but didnt realise there was a diamond

ring and brooch inside. She decided to auction

them and it was estimated she would earn

around 15,000 for the jewellery. However,

during the auction at Bonhams in London,

Jennifer was left astounded as the ring

    fetched 21, 875 and the brooch 27,500.

NEWT GOING ANYWHERE Local developers may be disappointed that their

plan for new houses near Staplehurst station

were rejected, but local pond life will be happy

that they can stay put. The field near Georges

Street, which has 12 ponds, is home to

hundreds of wildlife species all would have

been rehomed if the proposed plans for 16 new

houses and flats had gone ahead. Among the

creatures are 22 Great Crested newts which are

    protected. Coombe Bank Homes had

suggested the creatures could be captured

over a 60-day period and released away from

the site, but councillors rejected the proposal

due to the concerns over the wildlife.

FARE ENOUGHThank you for telling us in your magazine about the fare loophole (October).I went to Tunbridge Wells railway station and told them I wanted to buy an annual season ticket to Oxted via London, getting off the train in London and not continuing to Oxted. They refused to sell me one so I went to Charing Cross and talked to their ticket offi ce. The chap said he didnt know why they shouldnt sell me

such a ticket and then spent half an hour on the phone obviously talking to his managers. In the end he sold me the ticket which means I saved 328, on the normal TW/London ticket of 4,260.

SLOW SHOWDont get me wrong, Im all for local residents setting up these speed monitor things in villages and towns, but Im starting to wonder if theyre missing the point. I frequently drive through Hawkhurst and almost every day lately theyve had people out monitoring speeds. All well and good, but they do it so regularly people slow down because they

PERFECT PINK Anyone who lives in or near Tenterden will know there was recently some controversy surrounding one of the pubs, The Woolpack. After painting the exterior pink there was a backlash with locals up in arms about the new shade. I personally think it looks rather nice and brings a splash of colour to the high street. There are plenty of shabby looking pubs that dont look inviting, but The Woolpack always seems busy so their colour scheme must be working! The pink also makes the Town Halls walls look even whiter, so they should be grateful as surely they wont have to paint it as much now?

    Helen Roberts, Tenterden

PET PEEVETheres been a lot in the local news lately about people mistreating animals. Theres been dog-napping in Hawkhurst and I dont even want to think about the poor puss who was shot with an air rifl e in Goudhurst and left to die. It just baffl es me that people think its okay to treat animals this way. I have started to volunteer at an animal charity recently and I love spending time with all the creatures that dont have homes, but some of the stories of how they ended up there are horrifi c. People need to realise that animals have feelings and need to be loved and cared for, not mistreated!

    SO INTERV IEW

THE RAILWAY MANA retirement hobby has gone full steam ahead for KESR museum curator Brian Janes

If you have any questions about the Kent and

East Sussex Railway in Tenterden, Brian

Janes is your man. For 14 years hes

undertaken various roles at the station and

theres not much he doesnt know about trains.

People always come to me with the nitty-

gritty questions, the real anorak stuff, he says

    with a smile.

After retiring from the Ministry of Agriculture

in 2000 Brian swapped food marketing for

steam trains when he began volunteering at

Tenterden Town station. His first role was

behind the counter in the station shop, before

taking over the running of the Colonel

Stephens museum when curator John Miller

    died in 2011.

Its my local railway so when I retired I

thought Id come and help, explains Brian. I

have an interest in history so the museum is

what really fascinates me. Ive never been

called a curator before, but I am now!

From a young age Brian was interested in

railways, confessing that he was a train-spotter

before becoming deeply interested in the

history of trains. However, his connections to

Tenterden and the town tracks can be traced

    back generations.

This railway is actually in my blood, Brian

says. My five great uncles worked here and

one of them was actually a very early director

    of the Preservation Railway Society.

Brian may be passionate about the line from

Tenterden to Bodiam but one thing hes not

interested in is the thing most people dream of

    doing driving the train.

A lot of people always want to drive a steam

train, I mean Ive ridden on a footplate but its

not something I want to do, he admits. Im

interested in the wider social implications, like

why Tenterden wanted a railway. Ive actually

    written a book about it.

The book, titled Tenterdens Railway, is due

to be published this winter and tells the story of

how the town came to have the line and its

consequences. Brians thirst for history and

keen eye for detail has led him to write many

articles and booklets on the railway and he

    admits he loves investigating.

Id forgotten the joys of research, he says.

In Whitehall you have a hierarchy around you,

but this is like going back to school or university

and doing all the research yourself.

Over the last few years, much of Brians time

and expertise has been taken up with the Cavell

Van. The carriage which carried the bodies of

nurse Edith Cavell who was shot in 1915, Captain

Fryatt and the Unknown Warrior during the

First World War has been Brians baby. In 2010

he helped to restore the carriage and turn it

into a memorial where visitors can pay their

    respects to the fallen heroes.

I like to think that were putting a bit more

life back into the stories and are helping people

to remember, says Brian. A lot of people are

deeply moved when they visit it, which is

    lovely.

    Remembering isnt something Brian

struggles with, as he confesses he has a brain

like a dustbin. I can tell you the history of

everything, even the signal box and where it

comes from, he says. So is there anything he

    doesnt know?

You still learn something every day, he

says. When I started here I knew nothing about

the bloke Colonel Stephens who started the

railway, but now Im running the museum and

writing books. I cant be a proper train-spotter

though because I cant always remember the

    numbers on the carriages!

    NOTHING ESCAPES OUR ATTENTION

    WHOwell and truly put

    their foot in it?

That would be the young woman

who stood in a bar telling friends in a

loud voice how she pulled sickies at work,

made excuses for being late and didnt

really bother when she got into the

offi ce. She then turned to the listening

landlord, pointed to his job ad

on the wall and asked if

    she could apply.

    WHICHlandlord got in a bit

    of a pickle?

The one who was locked out

    of her own password-

    protected till behind the bar

for half an hour. Seems her

    helpful son entered the

    password, then disappeared,

only for the till to crash,

    leaving the hapless landlady

    trying to explain why normal

    service was suspended.

    Drinks on the house, surely!

    WHOmade a real social

    faux pas - twice?

    Answer: The marketing

    man who during the

    pre-dinner drinks tried

    to eat the sugared

almonds in a dish on the

    table - they were small

    stones. He then moved

    onto the potpourri

believing it to be a form

    of Bombay mix.

    WHYis this fi anc such

    a cheapskate?

    Because when he takes

    his blonde partner out

for a drink and she asks

for a large glass of wine

    (she can easily quaff a

    whole bottle) he quietly

    requests that the bar

    Result!

    WHICHlocal celebrity is a big

    Simples: TV presenter

I have a girl crush on

    I love her so much.

    That would be the young

    lady who recommended her

    Croatia - where the boss

    went for his honeymoon.

    Only problem was, after the

    meal, his new bride suffered

    from food poisoning, which

    sort of took the edge

    off the romance.

    WHYis this little lad never

going to tell a fi b?

    Because when hes out with

his parents they pass a man

in shorts fi tted with a

    prosthetic carbon fi bre leg

    year-old asks the chap: How

    did that happen? Man

replies: I told a lie. Lad

looks mortifi ed. Mum and dad

give the man the thumbs up!

    WHYdid this 15-year-old bring the

dinner table chat to a halt?

    Because he asked his

    mum why she bothered

    doing her hair and

    putting on makeup when

    she was already stuckin

    a marriage. Asked why

    he still bothered

    to look nice, he replied:

I know I should get out more, so I decide to try a trip into Tunbridge Wells for a meeting. Its a disaster.I take my wifes car as shes away and its a

hybrid with a promise of endless miles on

little petrol. I eventually squeeze into

seemingly the last parking slot in the

Crescent Road multi-storey car park, resisting

the invitation to have the car valeted. Primed

by my wife that three hours parking will cost

3, Ive brought some change, but find that

three hours will actually be 3.40 I only

have pound coins and 15p. I therefore put in

4, press the green button and for some

reason receive 1 change and therefore get

    two hours parking for 3.

Baffled and bemused, I realise that already

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council have got 60p

out of me for nothing. Also, two hours parking

will not be long enough but now I dont have

enough change to buy another ticket. Oh I

see, I can pay over the phone! In three different

ways even, should I wish! Salvation! And I

might not even be late for my special meeting.

First though, as I dont get out much, I read

the nine penalty Commandments, aka the ways

the council can bring the unwary motorist to

book and relieve him of either 50 or 70

(either amount, its apparently optional) but

with the welcome news that early settlement

would halve this what a relief. I say relieve

him because ladies who shop invariably seem

able to cope with the intricacies of parking and

    its charges, whilst mentally multi-tasking.

Fully advised about penalties, I try to pay

over my mobile phone to park for three

hours, having duly noted my location, with

both credit and debit card to hand. Once

connected, Im asked (in a pleasant female

voice remarkably unresponsive to my queries)

for my PIN or my account number. What PIN

    number, what account? Concentrate man

    theres more to come...

.or press star to select another account,

    she says. I press star.

Please enter your 11-digit account number.

Ah, she wants my credit card number. Happy

at this progress, I start to enter it but this is 12

digits! Help! None comes. I try the texting

technique, but the voice pleasant but

impersonal tells me the car registration

    matches a different account.

Exasperated, I go to my meeting and discuss

my experience with friends, who say my PIN

number was obviously the one on my debit

card, so I ring again and get out my wallet.

Crisis! My debit card has gone!

I rush back to the car park and am on my

hands and knees beside the ticket machine

when the bank rings me: a lady has just handed

in my debit card! Thank heavens for Tunbridge

Wells honesty! I rush down the road, retrieve my

card and get back to my meeting, where a

friend lends me some coins and I return to the

car park. Flustered, I forget to enter the extra

40p and once again get a ticket for two hours

for 3; another 60p gratis to TWBC, who now

have 6 for my two and three-quarter hours of

    parking.

At least, after a very successful meeting, I get

back to my car with a minute to spare. So alls

    well that ends well...

  • In 1951, fortune smiled on a young

man called Clint Eastwood. The smile

may at first have appeared to be a

    frown, however the recent army

    recruit was being flown from

Washington to his base in California

when the aircraft ran out of fuel and

    crashed into the ocean.

    Having survived the impact, Eastwood

and the pilot were forced to swim three

miles to safety. Despite the miraculous

outcome, the ordeal did little to change the

    21-year-olds burgeoning atheism.

Afterwards people asked me, Did you

have some kind of religious experience? Did

you pray? But I just needed to keep going. I

could see these lights way off in the distance

and I imagined that there was probably

some guy in one of those houses, sitting

drinking a beer. I said to myself, I just want

to be sitting there next to that guy drinking a

cold beer. But I dont recall any great

    spiritual reckoning with it all.

    Ultimately, the nearly-fatal accident may

have saved his life. Eastwood had been due

to ship out to Korea with his unit, but was

ordered to stay behind while a crash investigation

was conducted. His company suffered heavy

casualties in the campaign a body count that

could have included the future film star, had his

    plane not taken a dive.

Fate pulls you in different directions. I was all

ready to go but then things took a different turn

and I had a different life. Im a fatalist that way.

Fate certainly had big things in store for

Clinton Eastwood Jr when he emerged into the

world on May 31, 1930. A big baby, he was

nicknamed Samson by the maternity nurses,

though they could have had no idea about the

movie heavyweight he was to become.

It seems that luck was determined to seek

young Clint out, regardless of his own intentions.

Even though his high school drama teachers

encouraged him to appear in their plays, he

declined, preferring to concentrate on cars and

girls. Acting was not among his ambitions until a

man called Chuck Hill, who was stationed in the

same Californian town, noticed the 6ft 4in, slim,

handsome youngster. Eastwood moved to Los

Angeles in 1952 and there resumed his

    acquaintance with Hill,

    who introduced him to

    some of his Hollywood

    contacts. The enthusiasm

    of several low level

    people in the film world

    including an

    amorous telephone operator

led to him landing an audition

    with director Arthur Lubin

    (above), who offered

    Eastwood his first studio

    contract at Universal for $100

    per week.

This was despite Eastwoods early auditions

failing to impress Lubin and others, who

described him as amateurish and awkward. But

clearly his innate star quality was already shining

through, as Lubin simply sent him to drama

classes and signed him up anyway.

It took two years and many unsuccessful

auditions for Eastwood to land his first film

role, a minor part in the 1955 sci-fi movie

Revenge of the Creature. Directors disliked his

understated style and felt he was not a good

actor, while voice coaches attempted to train

him out of whispering and gritting his teeth

obviously unaware that his distinctive voice

and unique brand of repressed brooding would

make him a cinema icon in years to come.

If a person is confident enough in the way

they feel, whether its an art form or whether its

just in life, it comes off. You dont have anything

to prove; you can just be who you are.

Eastwood still undertook day jobs to support

himself and his wife Margaret into the late 1950s,

though he was already showing signs of the

tough guy persona that would serve him so well

on screen throughout his career. One evening he

was entering a restaurant with Maggie and some

friends when they were held up at gunpoint by a

gang. Unfazed by the weapon, Eastwood advised

them: Go on and pull that trigger and Ill kill you

before I hit the ground. The youths decided not

to take the chance and fled.

I tried being reasonable, but I didnt like it.

Its not surprising then that when his big break

finally arrived in 1958, it came in the form of a

cowboy. Eastwood won the role of Rowdy Yates

in a new Western TV series, Rawhide, (below)

which was an immediate hit with viewers.

The show made Eastwood a star and a

wealthy man by the time it was

    cancelled in 1966, Rawhide was

    earning him $119,000 (the

equivalent of 545,000 in todays money) per

episode but he disliked his youthful character

and was on the lookout for new challenges. When

the show ended, Eastwood already had the

acclaimed Dollars trilogy of Western films under

his belt and, with the help of director Sergio

Leone, had created one of his most memorable

characters, The Man with No Name. This brooding

anti-hero was the antithesis of Rowdy and had

established Eastwood as a bona fide movie star.

I guess any movie actor can become a role

model for audiences out there who enjoy him.

Westerns and war films served Eastwood well for

the rest of the 1960s, though he was to be blessed

with another iconic hero in 1971. Hailed by some

critics as the first true action movie, Dirty Harry was

an uncompromising cop film that introduced a now

legendary character and featured one of the most

    quoted speeches in cinema history.

I know what youre thinking Did he fire six

shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all

this excitement, Ive kinda lost track myself. But,

being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful

handgun in the world and would blow your head

clean off, youve got to ask yourself one question:

Do I feel lucky? Well, do you, punk?

Having turned down the role of James Bond,

as he believed the suave spy should be played by

an English actor, Eastwood took his first turn in

the directors chair for 1973s High Plains Drifter.

It was a return to the Western format and marked

the beginning of a notable new branch of

Eastwoods career. Although he has to date been

Oscar nominated for Best Leading Actor twice, he

has won both Best Director and Best Picture for

two films Unforgiven (1993) and Million Dollar

Baby (2005) and been nominated in the same

categories for two more, Mystic River (2004) and

    Letters From Iwo Jima (2007).

Ive taken advantage of a few breaks that

came along and moved along with them.

While continuing to star in a variety of genres

throughout the last five decades, Eastwood has

gradually focused more on directing. His last

starring role was in 2012s sports movie, Trouble

with the Curve, though his most talked-about

turn of recent years was probably in self-directed

2008 drama, Gran Torino. Playing an elderly

widower who struggles with the multi-ethnic

    makeup of his disintegrating neighbourhood,

Eastwood seemed to reconnect with aged

versions of his best-known characters to create

    the growling Walt Kowalski.

In Gran Torino, I play a guy whos racially

offensive. But he learned. It shows that youre

never too old to learn and embrace people that

you dont understand to begin with. It seems like

nobody else got that message, I guess.

    Currently directing the biographical thriller

American Sniper, it seems that Eastwoods luck is

holding even in his ninth decade. With an

estimated fortune of around 230million and a

cabinet full of awards to his name, theres no

disputing that hes enjoyed a phenomenally

successful film career. Whether hes been as lucky

in his personal life is arguable a reputation as a

serial womaniser and two failed marriages point

towards someone unable to sustain a

monogamous long-term relationship. But he does

have seven children and even as a pensioner, has

no problem attracting women half his age...

His first marriage to Maggie ended in 1978

    after 25 years and two children, Kyle and Alison;

though his first child, a daughter called Kimber,

had arrived two years before Kyle as a result of

his affair with dancer Roxanne Tunis. In 1975

Eastwood began a 14-year relationship with

actress Sondra Locke, his co-star in a number of

films including The Outlaw Josey Wales, Every

Which Way But Loose, Any Which Way You Can

and the fourth Dirty Harry film, Sudden Impact.

Their tempestuous time together saw Clint

father another two love children, Scott and

Kathryn, with flight attendant Jacelyn Reeves,

and ended with Locke suing him for palimony

    and fraud.

They say all marriages are made in heaven, but

    so are thunder and lightning.

Another daughter, Francesca, was born in 1993

during his five-year relationship with actress

Frances Fisher. In 1996 he married news presenter

Dina Ruiz, 35 years his junior and their daughter

Morgan arrived later that year. Since the couples

divorce last year, Eastwood has been romantically

linked to 40-something blonde Erica Tomlinson-

Fisher and a blonde employee, Christina Sandera.

I dont believe in pessimism. If something

doesnt come up the way you want, forge ahead. If

you think its going to rain, it will.

Whether or not his personal life can be

considered a success, theres no doubt that Clint

Eastwood is one of our last great film stars. Is he

still a fatalist, more than 70 years after that

frightening plane crash left him swimming for his

life? If so, maybe its not such a bad strategy.

    THE LOOK SO

    Christmas party season is looming

and while there is defi nitely

excitement in the air, there is also

that dreaded question you may be

asking yourself: What am I going to wear?

Whether its for a work, friends or family

party, its always a good idea to plan ahead

and avoid that last minute shop panic that

will either lead you to buy something that

will do or resign yourself to wearing the

same old frock you wore last year which is

likely to make you feel slightly miserable as

    a result.

So, start planning your party season

wardrobe now. You only need to have a few

outfi t options to fall back on, some which

you can mix and match with key pieces

instead of buying entire new outfi ts. Think

    about recycling some

    existing garments by

    updating them with

    new separates and

    accessories.

    For example, take a

    perfectly fi tted black

    tux jacket as your

    starting point and

    create a couple of

    looks from there:

    from a simple but

    effective pairing

    with black

    skinnies and

    embellished cami, to

    a useful arm cover-up over a sleeveless

statement dress, like this one from Ted Baker

    (399 at www.tedbaker.com)

Part of my job as a personal stylist is to

help women become aware of any fashion

bad habits they may have picked up over

the years and show them how to address

them. Sometimes its easy to feel like youre

stuck in a rut, so when you do go shopping

for an event which requires you to step up

the wow factor, be bold, think outside the box

and try on items you wouldnt usually go for.

And fi nally, if there is one must have

accessory to own this party season, its the

statement clutch. From metallics to bold

    colours or embellishments, grab whatever

    catches your eye.

    SO THE LOOK

This is great news for fashionistas, as

a ponytail is unlikely to suffer much

from the elements. Plus, its ideal for any

occasion loose it a little for a casual day

look and amp up the shine for a glamorous

    evening do.

You can also incorporate two other trends:

use a low side parting to emphasise high

cheekbones and embrace the sports luxe

movement by slicking back from the crown

with plenty of serum, such as John Frieda

Frizz Ease Perfect Finish Serum, 6.29.

When youre out and about during the day,

give the ponytail a little tug after tying it up to

release some strands and soften the hairline

For extra volume in the tail, add a dry

product such as Charles Worthington Volume

and Bounce Texturising Spray, 6.99 and

then lightly backcomb. For an extra style boost,

wrap the elastic with a thick strand of hair or

buy a fake hair-look band to disguise it.

You can take the look from the desk to

the dance floor with a few simple tweaks

super sleek and smooth is essential for

parties, so make sure your parting is sharp and

control flyaways with a little wax or styling

cream. A high shine, firm hold hairspray such

as LOral Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray

    Lumire Supreme Hold, 6.60, should

    do the job.

    MY

    PONYLIT TLE

With the prospect of winter winds and rain ahead, its always good to know theres a hair trend thats as practical as it is pretty. Sleek ponytails have been big news on the catwalks all year and the easy-to-master style is going nowhere this season

    THE LOOK SO

Eyes are big this season so lips are

taking a backseat, but that doesnt

    mean that you should neglect

them. Understated glamour will set off

your defi ned peepers perfectly think

about switching your lipstick for a stain,

which will give you a more natural

looking touch of colour. The long-

lasting but muted colouration is great

for a soft day look, but when its party

time, we love Chanels Rouge Allure

Gloss, 26. Available in nine shades,

this is a brilliant combination of stain

and gloss that will make you feel like

    the belle of the ball.

If youre looking to stand out from the

crowd this party season, itll take more

than a good shave and a nice suit. Ladies

love a man who smells great and if you want

to impress a discerning nose, itll be worth

investing in the new Tom Ford Oud Wood

All Over Body Spray. The latest addition to

Fords range, this fragrance features one of

    the perfumers most expensive ingredients.

The rare scent of oud wood is combined with

notes of rose wood, cardamom, sandalwood

and vetiver guaranteed to give you an air

of exotic mystery. Get yours for 42 at

    www.selfridges.com

Going straight from the offi ce to

after-work parties is great fun, but it

also requires a little forward planning

to make sure youre looking your best.

If the thought of carrying toiletries

everywhere makes your heart sink, youre

in luck. Probably the male equivalent

of a handbag must-have, Jack Black

    Epic Moisture MP10 Nourishing Oil

    (27.50 for 60ml at www.amazon.co.uk)

is a little bottle that packs a big punch.

Taking care of everything from dry

skin to wayward hair, this oil acts as a

    lightweight moisturiser, pre-shave balm,

    styling product and beard conditioner.

The formula may have nothing to do with

its namesake movie star, but its still a big

    grooming hit.

Untouched eyebrows are the order of the

day for autumn/winter 2014 except youll

need to do exactly the opposite to achieve

the look. Think romantically soft, brushed-up

arches. The fi nished result should look as

though your brows have barely even met a pair

    of tweezers.

Begin by taking a stiff angled brow brush

and eye shadow in the same tone as your hair

    colour, recommends Marc Reagan, Manager

of Artistry for Bobbi Brown. Lightly apply from

the inner corner of brows and brush straight

up. For the rest of the brow, brush up and over.

    THE LOOK SO

    There are many possibilities when

    considering breast reconstruction to

replace the whole, or part of a breast

    that has removed for cancer-related

reasons. Timings may vary and a breast may

be reconstructed at the same time as the

    mastectomy operation, or may alternatively

be done at a later date some time after the

    mastectomy. Broadly speaking, the

reconstruction can be performed using only

the patients own tissue (skin, fat and

occasionally muscle) or else a breast implant

and possibly other supportive materials may

    be used.

    Unfortunately there is no

    perfect breast reconstruction

and so each woman needs to

be taken as an individual, with

the pros and cons of the

    different options discussed

with her, in order to reach the

best decision for her. No matter

what technique is chosen, it is common

for two or three operations to be needed to

    complete the breast reconstruction journey.

The first is to make the breast mound, the

second to make any adjustments (often to the

other breast for symmetry) and the third is to

    reconstruct a nipple. Importantly, many

women receive radiotherapy as part of their

breast cancer treatment, which will also have

an impact on choice and suitability of

    reconstructive technique.

As a plastic surgeon, whenever possible, I

prefer to use techniques that involve only the

use of the patients own tissue. These

    techniques are complex and time-demanding

(for patient and surgeon) and are not always

suitable for everyone, but unlike implant-

    based techniques, once the breast

reconstruction journey is complete, no further

surgery is necessary in the patients

    lifetime.

    The gold standard method of

    breast reconstruction is the

    DIEP flap. This involves taking

skin and fat from the abdomen

    (the same tissue that is

    removed during a tummy tuck)

and sculpting this into a new

    breast. Using this technique requires

microsurgical techniques, in which the tummy

tissue is brought back to life by connecting its

blood vessels to those in the chest. Other

parts of the body can also be borrowed from

to reconstruct a breast without an implant if

there is not enough tummy fat. Areas include

the upper inner thigh, the buttocks or the back.

If the complexity of the above
