Building on the future

For this issue,

Zagat Survey editor

Merrill Shindler looks

into the phenomenon of

brandywine, a diminutive

continental restaurant

on the western edge

of the San Fernando

Valley. It’s a culinary

gem in the midst of

a fast food universe,

where a barebones

staff manages to turn

out food of exceptional

quality, in a style that

faded away eons ago.

Says Shindler, “It’s a

reminder that all you

have to do to be current

is stay in the same place

long enough.”

While yoga,

massage and aroma-

therapy are her favorite

ways to improve

her mood, regular

contributor Holly berecz

knows that the items

we surround ourselves

with in the home every

day have a profound

effect on the way we

feel. Her favorite pick-

me-up piece at home is

a Lady Chair by Marco

Zanuso, because “its

sunny yellow color and

modern, feminine shape

always put a smile on

my face.”

Here’s to exciting changes

As the short winter days seem to drag on, often our

mood begins to follow in their footsteps. Even in sunny

Southern California, we wait for the return of extended

daylight and long for the new beginnings of springtime.

You may be spending more time indoors, but you don’t

have to miss out on the sunshine. This selection of items

for the home, made right here in SoCal, can lighten any

mood and make winter bright. —Holly Berecz

Custom Handmade CandlesAncient Egyptians used

aromas for healing. In In-

dia, scents like cinnamon,

ginger and sandalwood

have long been used

for therapeutic purposes.

Every culture through-

out time has understood

the benefits of aromather-

apy—using scented oils to

promote health, happi-

ness and wel l -being.

The Giant Candle Compa-

ny in Canoga Park offers

28 sizes, 69 colors and

nearly 400 scents. That’s

over half a million illumi-

nating possibilities! What’s more, they’re all custom-made

by hand. Husband-and-wife team Duane and Catherine

Overturf started making large candles for themselves in

their garage. Today, they are the first custom-order store

in the country to specialize in extra large candles. Taking

three days or more from start to finish, each candle is a

unique expression of the person who ordered it.

DesignDesigndnaDesigndnaDesign Appropriately named “Lazy

Bones,” the first TV remote control was

developed in 1950 by the Zenith Radio

Corporation. The original device was

connected by a cable that ran from the

viewer to the television set. Later that

decade, Zenith engineers Robert Adler

and Eugene Polley came up with the

wireless ultrasonic remote. The industry

changed over to infrared in the early

1980s.

It’s usually balmy in California, but there

was a cold snap in 1905. Eleven-year-old Frank

Epperson mixed some soda powder and water,

and accidentally left the drink on

the porch overnight with

the stirring stick still

in it. The next day,

he awoke to a frozen

stick of soda water.

Fast forward to 1923,

when Epperson cashed

in on his invention— the

popsicle.

Tuscan Collection Inspired by his passion for elegance and old-world craftsmanship, Dana Creath began designing unique

lighting fixtures in 1968. Based in Newport Beach, Creath offers an eclectic collection of designs inspired

by European antiques. This selection from the new Tuscan Collection draws on old-world techniques and

skills, featuring hand-cut materials and clean lines. Like the fine wine, artistic masterpieces, breathtaking

countryside and exceptional cuisine of Tuscany, the appeal of this collection lies in its simplicity. Deep hand-

rubbed finishes provide contrast to rich gold highlights. Drip-free wax candles evoke a feeling of classic

elegance. Shown: two-light iron wall sconce; six-light iron lantern; and four-light forged iron chandelier.

Some say it was the

British who invented Champagne.

But others raise a glass to Dom

Pérignon, a 17th century Benedic-

tine monk who was the manager

of an abbey with a vineyard in

the French region of Champagne.

Among his innovations: making

white wine from red grapes, and

using corks to trap carbon dioxide

inside the bottle, thus creating

bubbles—and the bubbly.

Perhaps some of

today’s top chefs got their

start at home with the Easy-

Bake Oven. The nation’s first

working toy oven debuted in

1963 and has been a house-

hold favorite ever since. It’s

undergone various design and

color changes in keeping with

the times, but the Hasbro oven

is still baking up sweet treats

and even sweeter memories.

Aqua Banded Low BowlHappy Cylinder VaseGlass blower Caleb Siemon grew up making things with his hands. As a

teen, he discovered the fine art of glass blowing at a California art camp.

He perfected his art by studying design and shadowing renowned Italian

master glass sculptor Pino Signoretto. With an unabashed passion for

glass, he opened his Italian-styled studio in Santa Ana, where he creates

breathtaking glass art with the simplest of forms. “I always start with an idea,

but have learned to remain flexible to allow for the natural qualities of the

glass,” he says of his signature aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the rich

hues and undulating topography of Southern California, the Aqua Banded

Low Bowl features alternating layers of opaque and transparent colors. The

Happy line, shown in vibrant lime green, is made with the Italian technique of

“sommerso,” or encased color.

We rely on Kleenex when we’ve

got the sniffles or want to dab away our

tears. But the soft tissues manufactured

by the Kimberly-Clark Corporation were

first introduced in 1924 to remove cold

cream. Early ads featured Hollywood

screen legends using Kleenex to wipe

off their make-up. After customer

input, the company

began marketing

tissues as disposable

hankies.

The parachute,

invented long before the

airplane, was actually created

to save people who might have

to jump from burning buildings.

Louis-Sébastien Lenormand is credited

with designing the first practical model

in 1783. But the idea originated centuries

earlier in the fertile imagination and

sketches of Leonardo da Vinci. The first

passenger to test drive a parachute

was a dog.

Loom As a designer of both interior

and exterior spaces, Kateri-

na Tana is used to working

on projects from the ground

up, taking the lengthy jour-

ney with her clients and see-

ing them through the adven-

ture. Over time, she realized

that something was missing

in the current textile market.

“Everything appears to be

a derivative of something

else, celebrating the past or

another geographical style,”

she says. But she believes

“the here and now is a mo-

ment to be celebrated just

as any other.” The blue sky

and all-pervasive ocean that

surround her home in Ven-

ice Beach inspired her light,

fresh and timeless Loom col-

lection. Her patterns evoke

the spirit and casual beauty

of beach living. Clockwise:

and Anacapa.

Whisper SconceWhether creating a roman-

tic ambiance or soothing

spa-like atmosphere, the in-

terplay of shadow and light

can have a profound effect

on the mood. Based in West

Hollywood, designer Kevin

Kolanowski of Fuse Lighting

uses this concept to fash-

ion his distinctive brand of

lighting designs. Exclusively

handcrafted, his most recog-

nizable designs incorporate luxurious materials such as rock crystal, smoky

topaz, mica, agate and capiz shells. The Whisper Sconce features a show-

er of clear polished rock crystal nuggets with an oil-rubbed bronze base

frame. His tactile designs beautifully interact with light, creating jewelry for

the home and an ethereal sense of style. “Simple and elegant shapes have

been my inspiration, and keeping the line diverse is one of my goals,” he

says, noting that he also offers custom one-of-a-kind pieces.

tranquil place where cares are few and life seems

to float along in perfect harmony. The aquatic

experts at Underwater Depot in Sherman Oaks

design ecosystems that are not only breathtaking,

but also incredibly stable and biologically balanced.

Owners Marc Grover and Chris Bernie have over 30 years of

collective experience in the aquarium industry. Their team concep-

tualizes an aquatic work of art, hand-selects the perfect sea life, follows

the project through installation and helps maintain its delicate symbiosis.

Their underwater scenes, such as the one in this ZeroEdge™ aquarium, can calm

the mind, lift the spirit and encourage a state of deep relaxation.

Pasadena Living CollectionSouthern California is known for its relaxed,

laid-back lifestyle. Thos. Moser, designers

and builders of heirloom quality handcrafted

solid wood furniture, have created an

entire collection of seating and occasional

tables that reflect the distinct West Coast

air of openness. Curvilinear and sculpted,

with glass tops and poured edges, the

Pasadena Living Collection draws on the

organic architecture of California’s mid-

century style. “These pieces are much more

than furniture,” says designer David Moser.

“They exemplify where we are headed with

artistry in wood, employing light, fluidity and

sculptural effects to keep the eyes moving

and create pieces that do more than serve

their intended purpose as furniture.” The

launch of the Pasadena collection coincides

with Thos. Moser’s recent opening of its Los

Angeles showroom.

BEFOREThis Torrance kitchen suffered from a variety of ailments: Being closed off from the dining room and having an island cook top with an inefficient downdraft venting system. A neighbor’s side yard was visible from the window, and a large set of French doors minimized wall space. “Overall it was poorly laid out,” Savarese says.

AFTER Thanks to a bevy of cleverly zoned and concealed appli-ances, “the new kitchen is a chef’s dream,” says Savarese. “It can accommodate up to three ‘chefs’ working at the same time. And we changed practically everything about the layout to provide a better view and more storage space.

Lee actually purchased it as a home that

to redo it all. Here’s how he performed an

architectural miracle: “I tried to salvage as

muchoftheremainingstructureaspossible,

But he had to rip out all the old electric

wiring—which may have caused the fire—

in the kitchen and master bedroom to add

about 500 square feet, and notes that “the

“The architect is a champ for redoing it

with us in mind,” says Cher, who now lives

in Malibu. “We had a lot of terrific times

in that house.”

The size of the kitchen was increased by about 200 square feet. Custom cabinetry was added and Ann Sacks tiles grace the walls. Appliances are by Wolf. The retro decor is fitting.

Architect and new owner Kenneth David Lee is shown with his daughter, Catie Casazza, a landscape architect who worked with her father on the project.

Where others may have added a second

story to the home, Lee decided against it. “I

knew anyone else would have added. It isn’t

against any city ordinance and it would have

been easy to do,” he says. “But I wanted to

maintain the integrity and history of the

house. The open floor plan takes full advan-

tage of the morning sun and stunning views.

I’m happy I kept it a one-story.”

This wasn’t the first celebrity home for Lee,

who opened his own firm in 1978 after get-

ting an architectural degree from USC and

working with noted So Cal architects Edward

Niles and Philip Jon Brown.

Of the 500-plus residences Lee has de-

signed, some notable clients include guitarist

Steve Vai, Warren Beatty and Annette Ben-

ing, Barbra Streisand and celebrity publicist

Howard Bragman.

His firm creates and renovates everything

from Mediterranean estates to mid-century

modern homes to cutting-edge contempo-

rary structures.

Like all forward-thinking architects, Lee

always has his eye on conservation. For his

new home, he double-insulated every win-

dow and door, and installed solar panels on

the roof.

“The [monthly] energy bills for a house of

this size and the pool are only about $300,

thanks to the solar panels and insulation,” he

says. “About 75 percent of the home’s energy

is produced by the solar panels, and with the

Lee’s daughter, Catie Casazza, who fol-

lowed in her father’s academic footsteps and

studied at USC (although her master’s degree

is in landscape architecture), was in charge of

the backyard.

But she concedes she’s learning on the

job, as her initial instinct was to get rid of the

pool. “The place was desolate and sad, so my

first thought was to tear down the back yard

and start from scratch,” she says. “But my dad

was dead set against tearing this pool out.”

Casazza worked around the small pool in

the 1,000-foot long yard, re-tiling it instead

and putting in an elevated spa/fountain in

order to transform the desolate feeling into

a peaceful one.

Cracked hardscaping surrounded the pool,

and there was the matter of the “S” and “C”

fence, rusting and falling down. Casazza

replaced the hardscape with native plants,

installed a built-in barbecue and created a

koi pond. As for the fence, she had it sand-

ed, reposted into the ground, and painted

blue. The letters are still in place.

“The good news about this place,” Casazza

says, “was that it was bought by my father,

someone who loves it and will always take

care of it.”

The master bath off the bedroom was expanded and updated.

Evidence that Sonny & Cher enjoyed their early stardom in the home is evident on the home’s iron fence, now painted a cool blue.

Steel for a Steal Under the Energy Improvement and Ex-

tension Act of 2008, U.S. homeowners who

install an Energy Star-certified metal roof

in 2009 — including the modern-minded

architect’s gem, heavy-duty Galvalume

steel — may be eligible for a tax credit up to

$500. An Energy Star-labeled metal roofing

system has at least 65 percent solar reflec-

tance for low-slope roofing and 25 percent

solar reflectance for steep-slope roofing. And

the savings continue on down the line. Ac-

cording to the Metal Roofing Association, a

recent study showed that a homeowner in-

vesting in a typical vertical panel metal roof

would spend about $9,460 over the course

of 60 years, as compared with $34,615 for

upkeep of a premium asphalt-shingle one.

For more details, visit steelroofing.com.

Lap of LuxuryLap siding isn’t just for traditional-style

homes. In its fiber-cement composite form

it’s increasingly being used on modern struc-

tures thanks to its superior resistance to wa-

ter, fire, insects and extreme weather. James

Hardie’s Artisan Lap line, along with its Ar-

tisan Matrix Panels, come in 5/8-inch thick

boards made in smooth or textured sur-

faces that are ready to paint. The lap boards

have a unique tongue-and-groove feature

that allows for a precise fit,

plus there’s a 30-year-war-

ranty. (Compare that to good

old-fashioned cedar.) And

because of its recycled con-

tent, insulation ability and

sustainability mindset, it’s

one of the top-rated green

building products going.

Prices vary; 888/800-7864

or jameshardie.com for

dealers.

A Cushy Life If you love the look of rugs but really need

a heavy-duty carpet, you really can have

both. One of the loveliest examples is Stan-

ton Carpet’s British West Indies-inspired Is-

land Cove Signature Series in “Mermaid.” It’s

made with environmentally friendly wool,

touted for being sustainable, non-allergenic

and stain-resistant. Prices vary; 800/452-

4474 or stantoncarpet.com for retailers.

Light ForceSwitch to more sophisticated light control

with Lutron’s HomeWorks system, featuring

such Signature Series keypads as this “Mon-

terey” style in satin nickel.

With a custom HomeWorks

system, these narrow-profile

controls will fit flush within a

door’s trim or jamb, or within

custom cabinetry. The key-

pads can be programmed to

control an individual zone

or a group of zones indoors

or out. They also have back-

lighting for better readability.

High StyleThings are looking up when it comes to ceil-

ing fan style. That’s certainly the case with

copper-bronze-finished beauty with tinted

opal glass (model F803-CBPR) from Minka

Aire. Featuring a halogen light, the 58-inch

fan offers a trio of aerodynamic vanes with a

variable pitch. About $540; 951/735-9220 or

White LightYou can bet on this: White kitchens will nev-

er go out of style, especially when they are

as streamlined as this one, which offers the

beauty of marble without the upkeep. That’s

due in large part to Caesarstone’s “Bliz-

They’ve been perfecting their skills ever

a type of food that no one served— continen-

ized, with fewer heavy sauces, though still

lots of butter and cream.”

McWilliams started out at Du-par’s, where

she worked for 10 years in management—

“though if you were in management, you

had to be trained in the kitchen. That was a

Du-par’s rule.”

finishing touch

Marjory KronWe’ve all stood at the water’s edge and marveled at that

fascinating spot where our world meets the unknown. For

Malibu artist and lifelong rock enthusiast Marjory Kron, this is

a place of pure inspiration. The waterline along the Channel

Island Harbor jetty sparked a collection of soothing and soul-

moving sketches. At the Water’s Edge expresses the mystery

of the great expanse just beyond dry land. A Closer Look

examines her enjoyment of rocks as objects. “Rocks express

something so basic. Everything else in the world is built on

them or of them,” she explains. “They’re the star stuff, and

they remind us of our origins in the universe.” With a master’s

degree in art therapy, Kron finds not only beauty in art, but

also a powerful tool for healing. To see more of her work, visit
