Cultural Imperialism: The dominance of one culture over another

Countries often try to limit the influence of foreign countries in order to maintain their identity

Examples: 60% of films broadcast by the TV channels in France must

be made in Europe Saudi Arabia banned the sale of cats and dogs in an effort

to curb Western influence (pet owning has never been common in the Arab world)

The Chinese government forced 2,000 Western companies (located in China) to change their names to more Chinese sounding names

What is a “Collective?” A Collective is a group to which a person

belongs and identifies with Examples: Soccer team, family, group of

friends, etc. Why do we group together?

Sense of belonging Achieve a common goal Share similar characteristics

Ideological Beliefs

Just as individual identities have been affected by globalization, so have collective identities! Is economic competition introduced by globalization (more

businesses) is leading to more individualistic societies (instead of collectivist)?

The rapid changes of globalization have re-vitalized fundamentalism – a desire for the past and a loss of tolerance for differences in religion and culture

Can you think of any “real-world” examples???

Ideological Beliefs

Page 42: Social 10-2 Globalization Case Study #5: Identity

Just as individual identities have been affected by globalization, so have collective identities! Think of five collectives in which you are a

member Brainstorm as to how each collective may have

been influenced by globalization Compare your answers with a partner
