10.1 Commitment to society: working towards inclusive communities

Our goal in relation to social responsibility is to improve our contribution to society by engaging the unique resources that Amadeus has to make a real difference in the countries where we operate.

In 2016, corporations were called upon to contribute their expertise to support the efforts made by governments and non-profit organisations in addressing the UN-led Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At Amadeus we leverage our people’s time and talents, our technology solutions and our expertise and relationships in the global travel industry. We believe that through our professionals and our position at the centre of a fast-growing global travel and tourism industry, we can make a significant contribution to reducing some of the social challenges highlighted by the SDGs.

In the past year, we made good progress on issues such as inclusiveness and quality education for disadvantaged people in our local communities, facilitating digital literacy in underserved markets and providing innovative technology solutions to answer global emergencies. We also completed a worldwide research project on accessible travel, focusing on the key role technology can play in providing accessible travel solutions and content. All this was possible through collaboration with 200+ partners in social responsibility – including international and non-profit organisations, travel industry partners and educational and public institutions.

Our highlights in 2016Our biggest achievement in the year was our ability to inspire one another to engage more deeply in the workplace and through our industry partnerships to address some of the social challenges in the countries in which we do business.

Amadeus programme

Issues we address Action SDGs addressed

Technology for Good

Global research on accessibility in travel

Global research to provide insight into the challenges and opportunities for delivering accessible travel technology and content to travellers with accessibility needs. Key findings and industry recommendations

from this pioneering work will be made public in 2017.

Goal 8: Inclusive economic growth and decent work for all

Goal 4: Inclusive and equitable quality education

Innovative travel tech solutions to answer emergencies

Social innovation pilot with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to explore the use of travel data analysis in order to help manage the spread of epidemics. This pioneering initiative aims to provide a

mechanism by which the humanitarian sector could rapidly apply existing complex data sources to understand the evolution of global emergencies at the time they happen.

Goal 9: Increase access to ICT and provide universal

and affordable access to the internet in least developed

countries (target 9.c) Goal 4: Inclusive and equitable

quality education

Knowledge & Skills Transfer

Inclusive, quality education for all

Building on years of skills training for young people by Amadeus country offices, we initiated a pilot programme with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Ministry of Tourism in Kenya to increase access for women and youth from underserved communities to employment and entrepreneurship in travel and tourism. This project addresses two global challenges: (1) the need for

more skilled professionals in the fast-growing sector of travel and tourism, and (2) the dire situation of millions of unemployed youth who, though educated, lack the sector-specific skills required by businesses.

Goal 8: Inclusive economic growth and decent work for all

Digital literacy – extending the benefits of affordable computer technology

Our global partnership with Computer Aid International came to fruition in a pilot to tackle the digital divide in Sierra Leone. Amadeus contributed computers to equip e-classes in rural primary and

secondary schools in the country. This project ensures that all students, regardless of learning ability, location and social or financial background, are able to access the e-classes. We are delivering another

200 computers in 2017 to similar educational projects in South Africa and East Africa.

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote

inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster

innovation (target 9.c)

Community Support

Alleviating poverty in our local communities

Our sixth edition of the Latin America Volunteer Day: over 300 staff members from offices across the continent went out with our customers to help people at risk of social exclusion in the local communities.

134% growth in fundraising in the workplace as part of business projects and campaigns. Funds raised go to social development projects identified through Amadeus offices worldwide.

Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere

The number of Amadeus staff dedicating their time and talents as well as the company’s resources under their responsibility grew by 50%. This translated into growth in our three social responsibility programme areas: Technology for Good, Knowledge & Skills Transfer and local Community Support.

10.2 Technology for Good

In collaboration with UNICEF’s innovation team, Amadeus started exploring the use of travel data analysis to help manage the spread of epidemics and other types of humanitarian crises. This pioneering initiative aims to provide a mechanism by which the humanitarian sector can rapidly apply existing complex data sources to better understand the impact of serious emergencies at the time they happen.

Innovative data solutions to improve response to global emergencies

In the project’s pilot phase, UNICEF’s innovation team used aggregated data sets from Amadeus to better understand the patterns in the spread of Zika and potential outbreak zones.

‘The only way we can get this done is by working with the private sector to help the office of Innovation and UNICEF build the infrastructure to gather and distil real-time data into actions for children where they live.’

In collaboration with UNICEF, we launched the branded campaign Click for Change to boost online donations on travel websites using the Amadeus Donation Engine. UNICEF channels the funds raised into multi-country programmes that give thousands of children a fair start in life.

In 2016, travellers making bookings on the airline websites of Iberia, Finnair and Norwegian raised €0.834 million. This provided further funding for UNICEF’s immunisation programme in Angola and Cuba, the Schools for Asia programme and Regular Resources to answer humanitarian emergencies. Amadeus business units contributed additional funding to UNICEF’s Schools for Africa programme and emergency work in the Syria crisis.

Travel as an additional source of funding for social development projects

The Amadeus Donation Engine works simply and effectively ‘behind the scenes’ of online travel selling platforms. It enables online travel providers and sellers, such as airlines and travel agencies, to solicit micro-donations securely and easily from people around the world when they buy travel online. UNICEF pools these micro-donations together for impact and uses them to fund children’s projects in countries where there is critical need.

The online donation programme is open for more travel partners to join at www.clickforchange.com.

A multi-language, multi-currency online donation engine to support

social development

‘The partnership between Norwegian, Amadeus and UNICEF has made these donations possible, but I’m optimistic that there’s so much more the travel industry as a whole can accomplish. As such, I strongly encourage other travel industry players to join the Click for Change campaign so we can all raise even more funds for UNICEF.

Children are the future, and together we can help make the world a better place for those who need it the most. By making it easier to donate, more people will contribute, and a small contribution from many passengers gives more children the future they deserve.’

According to the World Health Organization, 15% of the world’s population lives with some form of disability. This reality, together with the global legislative focus on the implementation of universal accessibility standards, led Amadeus to approach the issue of accessibility in travel from a more holistic perspective in 2016.

Building on our success in 2015 with the implementation of a more accessible version of Amadeus e-Retail, the world’s most widely used airline internet booking engine that powers over 100 airline websites, we advanced in the analysis of accessible travel trends and potential business opportunities in 2016.

We completed a global research project on accessibility in travel. The strategic recommendations from this research are currently being assessed by Amadeus’ executive management. Key findings and industry recommendations from this pioneering work will be published in 2017.

Engaging further with our stakeholders in this area, Amadeus participated in UNWTO’s celebrations for World Tourism Day 2016 on accessible travel for all in Bangkok (Thailand) and Madrid (Spain). Amadeus also attended the 2016 conference commemorating the European Day of Persons with Disabilities. This event highlighted the advances achieved by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), as well as the key role of public and private partnerships in enhancing the labour and social inclusion of people with disabilities.

Examples of how Amadeus helps to raise awareness on accessibility issues include the ongoing efforts to make Amadeus e-Retail platform accessible to level -AA (according to the WCAG 2.0 universal guidelines on web accessibility), the completion of a research project on the significance of accessibility in travel (to be published in 2017) and the promotion of training programmes to improve the employability of people with disabilities.

We also continue to leverage our partnership with Fundación ONCE,1 with the aim of contributing to the social and economic inclusion of people with disabilities. Fundación ONCE has been a key strategic partner in the completion of Amadeus’ research project on accessibility in travel.

Amadeus is closely following the implementation of the European Accessibility Act, EU legislation addressing accessibility issues faced by people with disabilities. This legislation covers access to information, web and mobile applications, e-commerce and transport products and services.

1 Fundación ONCE is an institutional authority on universal accessibility, and part of the Spanish National Organisation of the Blind.

10.3 Knowledge & Skills Transfer

Amadeus’ Knowledge & Skills Transfer programme fosters capacity building in our local communities. We do this by educating the future workforce on career opportunities in the sector and by providing relevant training.

In 2016, 2,710 young people benefited from training and mentoring in tourism, travel reservation and general business skills through Amadeus initiatives. These included partnerships between Amadeus offices and more than 110 universities, vocational training centres, schools and educational non-profit organisations.

‘With 1,186 million international tourist arrivals in 2015, tourism is not only a catalyst for development but also for inclusion. Though in most regions women make up the majority of the tourism workforce, they tend to be concentrated in the lowest-paid and lowest-status jobs, and perform a large amount of unpaid work in family tourism businesses. We thus need to work together to ensure women can access better jobs in tourism.’

Taleb Rifai, UNWTO Secretary-General

‘Tourism is a key backbone to the region’s economic development, with a projected growth of 16% by the end of 2016. This initiative enables us to empower women and our youth while building our local tourism and travel industry.’

H. E. Mr Najib Balala, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism

Amadeus, UNWTO and the Kenyan Ministry of Tourism joined forces to build a training project in tourism with job placements in local companies for young women and men in the country. To achieve this, we will be encouraging multiple stakeholders in the travel and tourism sector in Kenya – including hotels, travel agencies, tour operators and airlines – to support the project’s development and implementation.

The Global Travel and Tourism Partnership’s (GTTP) annual students and teachers awards ceremony was held at Amadeus’ Executive Briefing Centre in Nice. Amadeus has a long-standing partnership with GTTP and is a founding Board member in the organisation.

In all instances, the training provided professional skills to young people, including those living in social or digital exclusion, to improve their chances of employment and better prepare them for living in a digital world. Through our partnerships, we support training from early childhood to university.

Since 2015, the Amadeus’ company Navitaire, through its Food for Hungry Minds Schools (FHMS), has ensured quality education for children from underserved communities near Manila, the Philippines. FHMS provides students from Year 5 through to Year 7 with an intensive three-year bilingual education focusing on Maths, English and Science. FHMS schools have small class sizes and provide students with all books, supplies, uniforms, transportation, meals and medical and dental assistance as an integral part of supporting their academic success. 94% of FHMS students graduate from high school and over 80% continue on to further education.

Amadeus donated laptops to IAP (Instituto de Academias Profissionalizantes) to build a computer classroom in the University of São Paulo. With the support from Amadeus, IAP is teaching travel and tourism to youth under the GTTP initiative.

We supported FOAL’s (Fundación ONCE para América Latina) work towards social inclusion of visually impaired people in Latin America by donating 22 PCs to the AGORA programme to teach skills that improve the employability of people with disabilities in the Dominican Republic.

Working with our partners like Iberia and Computer Aid International for project development and logistics, we have been able to expand the reach and efficiencies of our global PC donations programme. In 2016, Amadeus country offices donated 520 computers to schools and projects around the world. This brings the total number of computers donated through this project since 2010 to 2,858.

Extending the benefits of affordable computer technology

It is through projects such as these, with the support from technology donors like Amadeus and the project’s joint funders, that the skills shortages faced by countries like Sierra Leone can be addressed and challenged. The long-term impact of this project is potentially huge, as it creates a skilled workforce, which will play a big part in enhancing Sierra Leone’s ability to compete in the global economy.

Computer Aid International

In a pilot project with Computer Aid International, we delivered 100 PCs to help address the digital divide in Sierra Leone. Ten primary and secondary schools across the city of Moyamba will use the computers to provide improved lessons in technology for over 4,000 students. The local University of Njala is managing the project on the ground in coordination with Computer Aid International to ensure that the schools have the right support to benefit fully.

10.4 Community Support

Amadeus’ Community Support programme aims to improve the living standards of disadvantaged people through initiatives with non-profit organisations and local authorities across the markets we serve.

Under this programme, Amadeus staff funded the work of 100 non-profit organisations in 2016. Through sports for charity, fundraising and cash donations, our people found creative ways to help in their local communities. Amadeus staff also dedicated over 10,500 hours to volunteering.

In addition, Amadeus business teams found ways to include a responsible component in their activities: volunteering in the local community as part of leadership development and team-building activities; using donations to incentivise survey and campaign responses; rewarding competition winners with donations to a charitable cause; and dedicating their customer Christmas present budget to a non-profit. The funds raised this way grew 134% in 2016, reflecting staff’s enthusiasm to make a difference.

Some of the non-profit organisations that benefited from this contribution in 2016 include:

Global and cross-regional

UNICEF, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Red Cross, the Movember Foundation and Habitat for Humanity, as well as cancer associations in the United Kingdom, Spain, the US and Greece.
