Key Messages
Personal Health Practices
Smoking
Smoking rates in Northern Saskatchewan females and males have remained high over the last
number of years, ranging from 42 to 49% in females and 33 to 46% in males. In 2013-2014, the
Northern Saskatchewan female rate of 49% was significantly greater than the provincial female
rate of 20%, while the Northern Saskatchewan male rate of 33% was substantially higher than
provincial male rate of 23%. The overall smoking rate of Northern Saskatchewan in 2013-2014
was 41%, which was elevated in comparison to many other northern regions in Canada.
Non-smoking individuals in Northern Saskatchewan are more likely to be exposed to second-
hand smoke in vehicles/public places or at home compared to their provincial counterparts. In
2013-2014, 21% and 14% of non-smoking individuals in Northern Saskatchewan reported being
exposed to second-hand smoke in vehicles/public places or at home, compared to 17% and 4%
of Saskatchewan residents.
Heavy Drinking
Northern Saskatchewan has similar rates of heavy drinking compared to Saskatchewan and
other northern regions in Canada. In 2013-2014, 18% of females and 26% of males in northern
Saskatchewan reported heavy drinking compared to 13% and 25% of their provincial
counterparts, respectively.
Physical Activity
The rates of active or moderately active physical activity levels in Northern Saskatchewan have
ranged between 50% and 58% between 2007-2008 and 2013-2014. Corresponding rates in
Saskatchewan have ranged between 48% and 53%.
Fruit and Vegetable Consumption
The proportion of the northern population that reports consuming 5 or more fruit and
vegetables a day has remained fairly stable between 2007-2008 and 2013-2014, ranging
between 35% and 41%. During the same time period the provincial rate ranged between 35%
and 39%. In 2013-2014, the northern rate of 39% was very similar to many other northern
regions in Canada.
Breastfeeding Initiation
The proportion of women who reported initiating breastfeeding in northern Saskatchewan
ranged between 71% and 82% between 2007-2008 and 2011-2012. Saskatchewan rates ranged
between 86% and 90% during the same time period.

Personal Resources
Sense of Community Belonging
Between 2007-2008 and 2013-2014, the proportion of the Northern Saskatchewan population
that reported a strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to their local community, ranged
between 77% and 81%. This was higher than the provincial rate during the same time period,
which ranged between 71% and 73%. Northern Saskatchewan had similar results in this
indicator compared to other northern regions in Canada in 2013-2014.
Life Satisfaction
The proportion of the Northern Saskatchewan population that reported being satisfied with
their life, ranged between 88% and 94% between 2007-2008 and 2013-2014. This was similar to
the Saskatchewan rates which ranged between 92% and 94%, as well as many other northern
regions in Canada.

Appendix A – Data Notes
1. Data Sources
Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) – The CCHS is a national cross-sectional survey that collects
information related to health status, health care utilization and health determinants for the Canadian
population. The CCHS covers the population 12 years of age and over living in the ten provinces and the
three territories. Excluded from the survey's coverage are: persons living on reserves and other
Aboriginal settlements in the provinces; full-time members of the Canadian Forces; the institutionalized
population and persons living in the Quebec health regions of Région du Nunavik and Région des Terres-
Cries-de-la-Baie-James. Altogether, these exclusions represent less than 3% of the Canadian population
aged 12 and over. In Northern Saskatchewan, Mamawetan Churchill River Health Region, Keewatin
Yatthé Health Region and the Athabasca Health Authority are grouped together to provide one north-
wide off-reserve estimate. Data from 2007 onwards from the CCHS can be obtained from either a yearly
file or from a combined two-year file. Due to the small sample sizes in northern regions, only the two-
year file is presented (CANSIM Table 105-0502 - Health indicator profile, two year period estimates, by
age group and sex, Canada, provinces, territories, health regions (2013 boundaries) and peer groups).
2. Definitions
Current Daily or Occasional Smoking – This refers to the population aged 12 and over who reported
being a current smoker. Daily smoker refers to those who reported smoking cigarettes every day. It does
not take into account the number of cigarettes smoked. Occasional smoker refers to those who
reported smoking cigarettes occasionally. This includes former daily smokers who now smoke
occasionally. Data collected for this indicator is based on the question referring to smoking of cigarettes,
only.
Exposure to Second-hand Smoke in the Past Month, in Vehicles and/or Public Places – This refers to
the non-smoking population aged 12 and over who reported being exposed to second-hand smoke in
private vehicles and/or public places on every day or almost every day in the past month.
Exposure to Second-hand Smoke at Home – This refers to the non-smoking population aged 12 and
over who reported that at least one person smoked inside their home every day or almost every day.
Smoking inside the home excludes smoking inside the garage, whether attached or detached.
Heavy Drinking – A definition change was implemented in 2013 to conform to the World Health
Organization (WHO) and Health Canada guidelines for heavy drinking. Heavy drinking refers to males
who reported having 5 or more drinks, or women who reported having 4 or more drinks, on one
occasion, at least once a month in the past year. While this indicator remains comparable for males to
the 5 or more drinks indicator published in previous years, it is no longer comparable for females.
Physical Activity during Leisure-time, Moderately Active or Active and Inactive Classifications – This
refers to the population aged 12 and over who reported the nature, frequency and duration of their
participation in leisure-time physical activity. Respondents are classified as active, moderately active or

inactive based on an index of average daily physical activity over the past 3 months. For each leisure
time physical activity the respondent is engaged in, an average daily energy expenditure is calculated by
multiplying the number of times the activity was performed by the average duration of the activity by
the energy cost (kilocalories per kilogram of body weight per hour) of the activity. The index is
calculated as the sum of the average daily energy expenditures of all activities. Respondents are
classified as follows: 3.0 kcal/kg/day or more = physically active; 1.5 to 2.9 kcal/kg/day = moderately
active; less than 1.5 kcal/kg/day = inactive.
Fruit and Vegetable Consumption, 5 Times or More per Day – This refers to the population aged 12
years and over that reports consuming fruit and vegetables 5 times or more per day. It indicates the
usual number of times (frequency) per day a person reported eating fruit and vegetables. The measure
does not take into account the amount consumed.
Breastfeeding Initiation – This is based on information provided by females aged 15 to 55 who had a
baby in the last 5 years. Initiated breastfeeding refers to mothers who breastfed or tried to breastfeed
their last child even if only for a short time. This indicator is derived from data collected from an optional
content module. Only provincial and sub-provincial estimates are available for years when the module
was selected by a given province.
Sense of Belonging to Local Community, Somewhat Strong or Very Strong – This refers to the
population aged 12 and over who reported their sense of belonging to their local community as being
very strong or somewhat strong.
Life Satisfaction, Satisfied or Very Satisfied – This refers to the population aged 12 and over who
reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their life in general. In 2009, the question on life
satisfaction was changed from a five-point answer category to an eleven-point scale. A grouped variable
was developed to provide a concordance between the two scales and is now the basis for this indicator.
