Architecture and Digital Space

• Much of the conversation and debate around architecture, and interrelated discourses of media, politics and social science occurs in digital space.

• Often this occurs through the feeds and forums of social media.

What’s in our Digital Archive?

• Journal Articles• Conference Proceedings• Conference Papers• Resource Repository

– Webliography– Resource Guides– Current Listings

• Images• Website

Rachel Isaac-Menard
I think we were discussing this before - do we want to categorize social media as a separate animal? at the moment on the website it is technically under resource repository because of Pinterest functioning in part as our former ' current listings' did. I'm happy to rethink this. at the moment in the notes, i have social media under 'current listings'
Noreen Whysel
I am removing the reference to Architecture as Political Image. We talk about this in two additional slides below where detail is more in context.

I guess here would be a natural place to mention we don't have a document management system, database, etc. as you were asking about. Not sure if you want to wait to see if we get that question...

Images

Rachel Isaac-Menard
you might want to mention that the images aren't accessible separately from articles at the moment. we'd like to create an archive of images, but we need to address copyright restrictions.
Noreen Whysel
There must be images that exist outside articles, such as the ones that illustrate our conferences. Do these have unaddressed copyright issues also?
Page 12: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

Resource RepositoryIn line with our commitment to scholarly communication services, the Resource Repository aims to facilitate and promote collaborative research between academics and information professionals.

•Current Listings•Resource Guides•Webliography

Rachel Isaac-Menard
I would place this near slide 6 and take out resource repository from this 'special projects' section
Noreen Whysel
I pulled this up to Slide 6 but realized that the reference to Pinterest falls outof context since we haven't explained what we are doing with it. Maybe it is better to use the slide text as notes under slide 10 but take the notes from this slide and place them under the Pinterest section?

Social Media Campaigns

Social Media Policy

• Relevant Content• Effective Summarization• POV Balance• Linking it Back to AMPS

Our social media campaigns are carried out by our interns and managed by a Social Media Manager.

Rachel Isaac-Menard
i guess it's at this point we say who we are - unless we do it earlier but this seems a natural point. For my role, you can say I manage research support activities, including intern program and communications. and anything else you think is necessary :)
Rachel Isaac-Menard
again i've put that in the notes. feel free to modify
Rachel Isaac-Menard
at this point we should explain our internship program a bit
Rachel Isaac-Menard
i did in the notes.

Page 16: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

General Guidelines• Vary sources: One post per week from the same source

– e.g. New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times– Use English language papers from various countries (ie. India,

Canada, Australia, etc.)

• One post/tweet per week on something from the resource repository

• One post/tweet per month on a back issue article

• When a new article is published at the beginning of the month: – Reference our article for the first week– Following that - One post/tweet per week related to issues

around our current article– Try to find things related to the article’s theme(s) and link to

those while still continuing to reference us in subsequent weeks

Rachel Isaac-Menard
i wrote a short note about the process - feel free to modify

Bit.ly Link Shortener

Noreen Whysel
I added a bit more context here for Bit.ly. One thing I haven't been doing much here is tracking performance over time. I have a count at about 30 days for most of these. Bit.ly does give you statistics that we can dig into a bit more later on but not for this presentation.

We just turned on the Pinterest Analytics feature in October 2015, so have less data than for our other social media accounts.

Noreen Whysel
Noting that Pinterest is a newer effort. I wanted to explain why we have zero Likes: Likes in this context works backwards from Facebook. It lists how many Pins we have favorited rather than how many Fans have liked our page. We have zero likes because we haven’t been favoriting Pins from other users yet. We will want to start doing this to improve our engagement in a similar way that following and liking content on Twitter and Facebook helps to engage our community
Noreen Whysel
Should we ask Kelsey to start "liking" pins so we have more than zero likes on this slide? The zero figure may be a point of interest. And since Pinterest is relatively new to us I am comfortable pointing this out as a work in progress.

Rachel Isaac-Menard
I would probably take resource repository out of 'special projects' since we've talked about it in slide 6. If you remove it, I'd keep slide 62 and move it up around slide 6

Architecture as Political ImageSupported by a Carnegie-Whitney Grant in 2014 from the American Library Association, Architecture_MPS has created an extensive webliography and a research guide related to the use of architecture in political campaign imagery in the US.

Rachel Isaac-Menard
LOVE IT!
Noreen Whysel
I have a few screen shots of the raw image archives. We can add a source, most were Getty, Flickr campaigns. What is your feeling about that? They are basically thumbnails from google drive. Do you have a policy for that?Noreen
Rachel Isaac-Menard
I think for the purposes of this presentation we can use that. I wouldn't want to make it public in Google Gallery or anything at the moment until I'm more clear on the copyright issues/restrictions etc.

Future Directions

Opportunities and Challenges

Rachel Isaac-Menard
I really like this section! good job
Page 67: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

Three Main Drives

1. to promote the articles and resources of AMPS

2. to promote the events and conferences hosted by AMPS

3. to add to the wider conversation on architecture and media, politics and society

Page 68: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

General Challenges• The Internet is a Rabbit Hole!

• Striking a balance between the different types of posts

• Initiating a conversation; engaging and growing followers

• Tie-in from Amps content to current events isn’t always obvious

• Character limits, need to be economical

• Tracking specific links, not just specific tweets

Page 69: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

Suggestions• Use scheduling software, like Hootsuite

• Big-picture approach: use materials that will relate to AMPS content in a broader way

• Paired content: external link and relevant AMPS content

• Five external posts for each internal one

Page 70: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

Challenges for Interns• Knowing the themes and content of AMPS materials

• Learning to use the social media platforms and tools

• Measuring the effectiveness of each post

• Getting into the head of the audience

Page 71: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

Suggestions for Interns• Provide a clear training document

• Keep communication lines open; offer to review suggested content

• Use Google Docs, email or another shared forum for discussing prospective content

• Praise interns for their efforts, discoveries, etc.

Page 72: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

Opportunities

• Engaging followers

• Utilizing available resources, analytics

• New platforms for engagement

Page 73: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

Rewards to Our Team• Broader and growing understanding of the topics at the

heart of AMPS

• Learning how social media works as a tool of promotion for an organization has been valuable

• Adopting the tone and eye for content fitting the mandate of AMPS has been a good learning experience

• Finding something that compliments our materials nicely is a good feeling

Rachel Isaac-Menard
initially i shortened these, but then I realized they might be direct quotes. If they are, I suggest using quotation marks which I think would be a nice touch and we can mention the interns by name. If they are not quotes we can shorten it on the slide and use these longer bullet points in the notes. We should probably mention Ted and Kelsey by name at some point in the presentation
Noreen Whysel
They were mostly paraphrased. I am trying to include their personas a bit in earlier slides.
Page 74: Social Media and Architecture Journal Archives

Rewards to Your Archive• Broader and growing community dedicated to the topics at

the heart of your archive

• Broader discovery of your digital content, your events and your works

• Fulfilling your mandate to preserve, promote and engage the greater public with your materials

• An interested, engaged community brings good feelings to all of your archives patrons, staff and the larger world

I am going to need to practice this to get the timing tighter. We only have 20 minutes and it's over 70 slides. Are there areas you think we should condense?
