OK, let’s talk about social media. I want to show you how I see them.

To do this, I will firstly compare them to…

2

Page 3: Social media - context also matters

…famous movies, that you’ve surely seen.

FacebookFight club

Imagine. You are fighting every night. Black eyes, cuts eyebrows, tired… And you don’t want to show it. You have a secret, but you don’t want your boss to know it.

Facebook - if you want to have your secrets in real life, you will need to know this platform very well or… simply don’t use it.

Facebook is also a place where you will find something like fan page’s - a special format for brands and communities. Fuck, its hard to find another platform where brands profiles looks almost the same as a private ones.

There are also, groups, events, messages, pokes, adverts, edge rank, friends lists, apps…. It’s so complicated. Too complicated. It’s like something from previous age!

But on the other hand - everyone is there. So you need to be there also. It’s sad :(

InstagramThe notebook

We are using it as a photo (and video) diary. If you want to know more about that beautiful girl that you’ve just met, you will probably look for her on Instagram. Why? Because there you will find informations about how is she spending her free time.

What is interesting - content on Instagram can live soo fuckin long. A lot of people will browse your history, to see who you are. Of course you are doing the same to see what had happened in your life in past months.

That is why this platform is great to tell a story. NOT to distribute funny pictures. To tell a story.

TwitterGreat Gatsby’s

Typical cocktail party with all celebrities in one place. You can talk to them and they are there for you. Sometimes they won’t answer, but they won’t also call the security for disturbing.

Twitter is old, but simple. It’s definitely strength.

Remember Gatsby’s party? Feel invited! Talk, engage, poke and answer even without a question :)

SnapchatSkins

If only Snapchat was available back in 2007. These teens from Skins would use it, with no doubt.

Actually Snapchat is not used for sexting (ok sometime is :) but gives you a lot of privacy. You can be sure that not everyone (comparing to Facebook) will see your posts.

It’s very clever app. Works for totally different reason than the older social platforms. It’s more similar to MMS than to Facebook or Twitter.

PinterestThe Devil Wears Prada

You want to wear prada? OK. Here you can do it.

You can also choose 543 places to visit, see 432 photos of your future puppy or have 948 tattoos in one place.

It’s like a big online wish list. You are collecting photos of things that you want to have. In this way Pinterest shows your aspirations.

VineThe Illusionist

Let’s be clear. To be good on Vine you need to be creative and constantly surprise your audience, like an illusionist. And this take time. Content on Vine needs to be very sophisticated and clever.

It’s not place for collecting your memories. If you want to write a diary - choose Instagram.

YouTubeTruman show

Second greatest world search engine. You will find there everything. From totally stupid stuff from people who are thinking that they are smart to keynotes of people who actually are smart.

You can have a feeling that cameras are everywhere.

TumblrHome Alone

Do you remember Kevin’s brother - Buzz? Of course you do.

There was a secret box in his room. Kevin found there Playboys, fireworks and other interesting stuff. All Buzz’s treasures.

It’s the same with tumblr - you are collecting there all stuff that is interesting for you, but you don't want others to see it. You publish there as a fake person. Nobody, know who you are.

And if they found that it’s your’s blog, you can easily change the name and layout. Its like putting the box into the different place, just to be sure that your younger brother won't find it.

Linked inMad Men

Tones of lies! You are showing off constantly. Building an image of a great specialist, even if you have no idea about what are you talking. What is more your friends are proving that you're right!

You are only telling here that you are good. You can not prove it. Its bullshit. People don’t believe in words. They believe in acts! - so better choose Slideshare if you want to built your personal brand. I’ve wrote about it in my previous presentation.

But on the other hand - it’s simpler to send a url as a CV instead of writing the real one.

slideshareTrue Detective

Do you remember Rust’s garage? Every interesting data was on the wall. His aim was to put it together and get an information.

It’s the same with slideshare. Man, you will find here a lot of fresh informations and knowledge. You just need to read it and take your essence.

Here you can show that you have a brain.

Personally I love it. I’m a heavy user.

TinderCrazy, Stupid, Love.

I need to tell something? Nope.

If you are ugly and stupid you need Tinder to nail some girls.

Probably if you are yourself you don’t need to use it. Which I strongly recommend to you.

Context of every social platform is very important for communication. Imagine publishing informations for professionals as a brand on Snapchat or Tinder. Or try publish 6 sec vids on YouTube.

Man, it won't fly.

It’s not only about what you are saying as a brand. You should also think where and how are you doing it.

You should choose your SM touchpoints not only on grounds of Global Web Index statistics. Of course stats are important, but please think also about your goal, yours TG behavior and content style.

It’s crucial.
