Anatomy of a Tweet

10

Twitter – Tools and Terminology

• Tweet = 140 character update

• Retweet (RT) = sharing another’s tweet

• Hashtag (#) = makes a word easily searchable

• Mention (@) = notifies user you were talking about them

• Direct message (DM) = allows you to privately communicate

with other users

• Modified Tweet (MT) = RT with changes/edits to original

tweet

11

Twitter – Followers

• You can “follow” (i.e. friend) people and organizations

• Other people and organizations can choose to follow you

• You will see tweets from those you follow you in your “feed”

• Your followers will see your tweets in their feed

To gain followers:

• Follow others

• Have an engaging bio and picture

• Engage in conversations and trending topics

• Retweet or mention users you’d like to gain as followers

12

Achieving Impact on Twitter

• Tweet regularly

• Respond to questions/comments (engage) – not just a

“push” of information

Conferences

To get the most out of Twitter when attending a

conference:

• Learn the official event hashtag and use it in every

conference tweet (#CADTHsymp)

• Follow the host’s official account to stay informed

• Look-up the Twitter handles of speakers and mention them

in your tweets from their presentations

• Follow speakers and other attendees

• Keep tweets short (so others have room to RT)

• Participate (or organize) a Tweet-up

19

Considerations and Tips

• Personal vs. professional vs. organizational accounts

• Start with one platform, consider branching out once well

established

• Determine platform, target audience, goals, evaluation,

define milestone/success

• Avoid only “pushing” information – i.e., engage

• Be a good SoMe citizen – give credit where it’s due, share,

build partnerships/relationships

• Use tools (e.g. Hootsuite, Tweetdeck) for scheduling,

monitoring, metrics, team-sharing
