Students communicating via a system called CU-SeeMe, with a video frame rate between 3-9 frames per second (1993).

Pros

• Save money & time • Meet from everywhere • Green issues - no travel costs, reduced cost of setting up a venue • Use of technology • Can use features of the software such as voting & document sharing • Can 'see' presenter • Can 'chat' at same time

Cons

• Not as exciting / inspiring / interesting as a live presenter or speaker • Presenter isn't getting feedback of feel of audience - can't adapt as going along • Need opportunities to interact otherwise not interesting - audience lose interest • Technology sometimes doesn't work.

• Instruct participants to have an internet connection that can handle video conferencing.

• Instruct on what hardware to use • Have a quick list of tech troubleshooting tips

DO A TEST HANG OUT

• Get some practice • Learn the format • Learn how to handle common tech issues that may pop up. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR EQUIPEMENT

• Have a good quality webcam • A good microphone • A computer that has enough speed to handle the video. • Use a headset!

(do not use the built-in microphone and speakers, if everyone uses a headset your Hangout will run much more smoothly.)
