EES Families and Friends,

The Epping Elementary National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) needs your help!! In keeping with the spirit of the Season we are joining the Great Pajama Drive in order to provide new pajamas to the children in need in our area. In order to accomplish this, we are asking our families and friends to donate new pajamas, sizes infants to 12 years. We need to have the pajamas collected by December 14th in order for the pajamas to be distributed by Christmas. We will have donation boxes available in our EES Lobby for you to drop off your pajamas. They do not have to be wrapped, just new. We thank you for your support for our endeavor and wish you the happiest of holidays. Members of the NEHS

Name Your Poison - November 2018

Tobacco and nicotine products present a poisoning risk

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a good time to focus on the risks of using

tobacco. Besides the long-term risks for cancer and other diseases from tobacco use,

tobacco products -- as well as other products containing nicotine -- can cause poisonings

in people of all ages.

E-cigarettes have become a particular concern as their popularity has grown in the

past decade, especially as large numbers of teenagers take up "vaping" or

"Juuling," with many not realizing that these products contain nicotine. In fact, the

liquid in an e-cigarette often has a very high concentration of nicotine, and the poison

center receives numerous calls about teens and adults who have become sick after

overusing these products, not realizing how potent they are. That also makes the

products a risk for young children who may get into them while exploring. Even a

small amount of this liquid nicotine can make a young child very sick, or even

kill them, which happened to a 1-year-old in New York state in 2014.

While e-cigarettes are a big risk, it's important to remember that other forms of

nicotine can make kids sick as well. Young children may chew on cigarettes or

butts, swallow nicotine lozenges, or drink from soda bottles or other containers used

for spit from chewing tobacco. When the poison center gets calls about kids getting

into tobacco or nicotine products we end up having to send about 2 out of 10 kids into

the hospital, double our average for all substances.

You can call the poison help line 24/7 at 1-800-222-1222 regarding a potential

poisoning, or if you just have questions or concerns.

Cooking up some holiday safety

Do you have a big bird on the menu this week? Remember that thawing a turkey can

take more than one day. All the thawing information you need is available from

the Partnership for Food Safety, and we've got some additional tips for avoiding food

poisoning this Thanksgiving.

Also, as we're looking ahead to December, remember that some holiday plants can

be poisonous to your children or your pets.

The NNEPC is here for you 24/7

Remember, the poison center is available 24/7, even on holidays, to provide fast,

expert advice about possible poisonings. Call us at 1-800-222-1222, chat online

at nnepc.org or text the word POISON to 85511.
