President’s Report…
Hi everyone, Our March dance was a great success. Thank you to all our members, friends and visitors that support our dances. I can't speak highly enough of The Speedsters, what a top band! They know just the right music to play to keep the dance floor pumping. Well done guys. I do agree with C.J's comment that applauding the bands would be nice. We do take their talent and professionalism for granted, so come on people let's "spread the love" and applaud all the bands after each song. We will have a different band each month for the whole year so the variety will be exciting. The first block of lessons on Thursdays is almost at the end, then it's Party night on the 6th of April. We’ll have some rock n roll social dancing and then give out certificates. All are welcome - just bring a plate of food to share. There will be no cost for entry to Party night. A big thank you to Chris & Raelene for their fabulous teaching skills. Please spread the word for our next block of beginner & intermediate lessons which will start on Thursday 13th of April. GJBR's thank you BBQ was a great days outing with a light sea breeze on the hill at Eastern Gardens. Lots came to enjoy the food and friendship in a relaxed setting on a very hot day. Thanks to all that came along. Also a big thank you to Paul & Glenda, Joe, Vicky & Rod and Maggie & Eddy for their help in setting up the new marquee and unloading my car, as well as all the other helpers that gave a hand. Cass and the Committee thoroughly enjoyed spoiling everyone. Demo's are slowing down a little. Last year was a very busy year with 32 demo's over 12 months. I'm aiming for 1 a month this year so all my wonderful dance team can have a
much deserved rest. Thank you all for giving your time to promote our club ♥0♥0❌❌s. A Bunnings sausage sizzle will be held on Sunday 23rd of April to raise money for our charity Geelong Mums. We will need some volunteers for cooking, food prep, serving and sales. Please SMS me if you can help. We are putting down some vinyl to dance on so wear appropriate shoes and bring a chair. Your participation for this day will be greatly appreciated. The 1st of April is our next dance, with another great band Rockin Daddies, so book your seats and tell your friends. Easter is also in April so we might spoil you with some chocolate Easter eggs. Hope to see you all there. Keep on Rockin Cass
Dance lessons started back up on Thursday 9th of February with a huge attendance!

done guys and gals!!
History of Geelong Jukebox Rockers Incorporated
On Saturday June 20th 1998 an ad was placed in the Geelong Advertiser stating any persons
interested in forming a Rock & Roll club in Geelong please meet at White Eagle House,
Fellmongers Road, Breakwater, Monday night June 22nd at 7pm. The ad had been placed by
Ray Craske, a school teacher living in Hamlyn Heights. The people who attended that first
meeting were Doug & Judy Speirs, Barry & Barbara Mitchell, Chris & Olwyn Ryan, Barry &
Carol Carson, Charles Smitten, Aggie Duncan, Mollie Brack, George Van Roest, Carol Baker,
Ray Craske and Margaret Gazzard. Ray had already printed out the paperwork for
incorporation with corporate affairs and the night was spent deciding on a name for the club.
One suggestion was Bay City Rock & Roll Club but we finally settled on Geelong Jukebox
Rockers. Office bearers were chosen, Ray Craske nominated for Secretary, Barbara Mitchell
nominated for President, Chris Ryan Vice Presiden and Judy Speirs Treasurer. There were 12
persons in total who wanted to be involved in the running of the club so originally the club
was run with a committee and sub-committee totalling 12 persons, those people were the
four office bearers above plus Doug Speirs, Charles Smitten, Mollie Brack, George Van Roest,
Carol Carlson, Carol Baker, Aggie Duncan and Margaret Gazzard. The club was incorporated
on the 30th of July 1998 and membership was set at $5 and the club chose official colours of
black & gold. At our first AGM 12 months later, 10 persons nominated for positions on the
committee, so the club adopted a 10 person committee, which was later inserted into the
club’s constitution. The club’s first newsletter was dated Aug/Sept 98 and advertised free
rock & roll on Monday nights and that the club’s first dance was Friday September the 4th.
The price for the dance was $5 per person and included supper! The records do not show
who the band was although it may have been a two person type band. The newsletter also
advertised that the club’s first major social function was a dance on Saturday November 14th
with the band Cincinnati Fireball which included supper with a cost of $10 for members and
$12 for non-members. White Eagle House was somewhat different back then with the stage
where the kitchen is now and looking out into the area where the snooker tables now sit.
October’s newsletter stated that membership had already grown to 105 members.
Written by Chris Ryan, verified by Barb & Barb Mitchell, Charles Smitten and Aggie Duncan
GJBR’s would like to welcome new members Andrew and
Katherine Whiteford to the club. We hope you enjoy your
dancing and hope to see you at our next dance!
Happy birthday to all our members who are having a birthday April!
Happy Birthday! May your facebook wall be filled with messages from people you never speak to!

Due to the size of this month’s newsletter there is no Petticoat Tales article for this
month but don’t worry my lovelies it will be back next month!
Due to upcoming extended holidays three of our ordinary committee
members will soon be resigning from committee duties.
This is a great opportunity for members to get involved in the running of our
great club. We are looking for members with a positive attitude and
enthusiasm and willingness to help out. Computer skills and/or previous
experience on a committee would be fantastic but not essential. Typical
duties might include helping set up before dances and pack up afterwards.
Distribution of membership cards (and perhaps take on the role of
membership officer?). Take dance bookings. Help out on the door or with the
raffle at dances.
If you have some of the following skills we’d love to hear from you:
Business Acumen (have run a business, small, medium or large) Admin skills in an office, accounts payable, Accounts receivable, general
admin Government work experience Private enterprise work experience Good Computer Skills in Word or Excel Worked using a Database Project management skills Run a social club before School Committee experience Someone with time to do some day to day running around
As these positions would only be for the remainder of the year and would
terminate at the AGM, it is a great opportunity to “have a go” and get a feel
for being on the committee without signing on for a whole year. This is a
great way to meet your fellow members and make new friends. Even if you
would like to help out at dances or social nights but do not wish to come to
meetings please let Cass know as any help would be appreciated.
Chris Ryan, who is our Festival Co-ordinator extraordinaire, has advised that due to an
upcoming extended holiday he will be unable to take on the role of co-ordinator for next
year’s festival. We are rapidly approaching the time of year when arrangements must start
to be put in place in order for everything to be ready on time. As stated earlier in this
newsletter the club committee will soon be losing three of its members and cannot take on
the organisation of the festival as well as the day to day running of the club. It is imperative
that a festival sub-committee is formed very soon or else we will be forced to cancel the
festival for next year. Chris has stated that he will be available to advise the festival
committee on all aspects of the preparation for the festival and as he already has contacts
and procedures in place much of the ground work is already done. Chris sent the notice
below:
Show & Shine competitions / Entry forms / Voting forms / Trophies / Judging
THE 2018 FESTIVAL WILL NOT GO AHEAD UNLESS WE ARE ABLE TO GET VOLUNTEERS TO HELP OUT
The committee are seeking persons to make up a festival committee for the 2018 festival, some of
the jobs of the festival are listed below, if you are interested in being on the committee as a
general helper or would prefer to be involved in a specific role below, please speak to Cass
You will not need to reinvent the wheel, this will be the clubs 19th festival, all checklists, forms, flyers,
contacts, budgets & backup support will be supplied, however if you have ideas for improvements in any areas, that’s great too. We will need people for:
Project manager / overseeing timeline checklist
Stalls / stall application forms / attracting stalls / stall layout / coordination on the day
Bookings & ticket sales
Raffles / Friday & Sat nights & major Sunday prizes
Advertising / Flyers / Posters / roadside signs / Vic Rock / Newspapers
Show & Shine competitions / Entry forms / Voting forms / Trophies / Judging
