American Heritage

• Activities– Students will take a field trip to the Union Terminal

in Cincinnati where they will visit the exhibit on the history of the city and collect information for a portfolio that they will compile on the history and development of Ohio.

– Students will go to see the outdoor drama Blue Jacket and follow up the trip with a comparison of the factual information that they find on Blue Jacket and what occurs in the outdoor drama.

American Heritage Activities Continued

– Students will visit the Warren County Historical Society in Lebanon in order to gather more information for their portfolio on Ohio History.

– Students will read the book “Flatboats of the Ohio” and discuss the significance of the settlement of the Ohio Valley.

– Students will complete a Simulated Journal entry from the perspective of one of the characters from the book “Flatboats of the Ohio”.

People In Societies• Activities

– Students will research the various fesitvals that take place in Ohio, and in a groups they will create a booth from a festival of their choice. As a class you could have a festival day and invite parents or other classes to come and experience the festivals of Ohio

– Students will fill in a blank map of Ohio with the different cultures and their locations. For example, the Amish in Holms County, the Shakers from Warren County, etc.

Activities Continued

– Students will take a field trip to the national Afro-American Museum and Culture Center in Wilber Force, Ohio.

– Students will use a map of the world to show where the various ethnic groups of Ohio migrated from and when they migrated to Ohio.

– Students will create a Venn diagram comparing the heritage, practices, religion, effect on society, etc. of the two major cultural groups in Ohio.

World Interactions• Activities

– Students will take a flour,salt, and water mixture to create a three dimentional map of Ohio featuring the major cities, land formations, and water features.

– Students will research the resources and climate of Ohio and compare that to another nation in the world of their choice.

– Students will research the connection between local business in the Dayton area and other parts of the world.

– Having already read “Flatboats on the Ohio”, students will discuss the influence of geography on the settlement patterns of Ohio.

– Students will compile a list of cities to visit in Ohio and create a puzzle for other students to decipher using a coordinate grid system. Once students have located the place they will list at least one place to visit there or one event of historical significance that occurred there.

Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities

• Activities– Students will read articles from local newspapers that

were written in response to local topics or issues. They will then respond in their Writing Journals whether or not they feel the articles were based on the writer’s opinions, or from facts.

– Students will choose one issue that is being debated at the state level and will track it’s progress over a month’s time. They will record any progress or decisions made in a Writing Journal.

Citizenship Activities Continued

– Students will form into three groups and will each be given an issue that is facing their local government. Each group must write a one page paper on their opinion of the issue and what the town officials should do about the topic. Each group must try to persuade the other groups to side with them. This activity is just for fun, so that students can see how everyone has their won opinion about different things, and how sometimes local officials try to get voters to side with them.

-Students will write a paragraph to one page about how a citizen should act, what their responsibilities are to the community, and what they should do to help improve the community.

-Students will write a list of behaviors that reflect how they should behave as citizens in a classroom. They will explain how student interact in a classroom to help it function better and run smoothly. We will discuss these as a class and make comments.

Democratic Processes• Activities

– Students will research one branch of their local government and will write a one page report about the function and purpose of that branch. Students will share their findings with the class.

– Students will find and read three newspaper articles about their local representative and what they have done for their county. Students will make a poster that contains these articles and a picture of their representative. They will also include a paragraph that they have written about their representative.

Democratic Activities Continued– Students will take a field trip to the county

courthouse to see how the justice system works in their community. They will complete a worksheet after they return from the trip. Students will also write a one page paper about three things they learned from the field trip that they did not know before going.

– Students will research one topic that is up for debate in the House of Representatives. Students will write an opinion paragraph about how they feel about the topic. Topics must be approved before beginning the project.

-Students will view the Schoolhouse Rocks video “I’m Just a Bill” to see how local bills started in communities like their own become laws make in Washington D.C.. Students will write about one safety issue that they feel should be addressed as a bill.

Decision Making and Resources

• Activities:– The students will create a mock budget for the

classroom. They will do interviews and research in creating the budget. They will be given a dollar amount that is appropriate and the person or group that had the most economical budget will get to put the budget into place using fake money,etc..

– Students will take a field trip to the local Farmers Market to see the use of consumers, goods, services, and competition.

Decision Making Activities Continued

– Students will identify and locate the various resources, goods and services of Ohio on a map.

– In groups, students will develop the ideas for a new product or service. They then will be trying to get others to invest in their product or service by using marketing methods (making a presentation).

– Students will create a chart that compares and contrasts the resources, goods and services of their local community to the state of Ohio and to the United Sates.

Science, Technology, and Society• Activities:

– The students will research the Underground Railroad and present a power point presentation.

– The students will research their family ancestry to find out if any of their family members were from Ohio. Students may use a variety of sources on the internet and various other options. If the student is not from Ohio then that student may research the state that they believe they are from.

– The students will be asked to write a journal based upon an article they find from the Ohio discovery web page.

Science and Technology Activities Continued

– The class will take a field trip to COSI. There are many activities that students can experience hands on lessons which is a great learning opportunity.

– The class will take a field trip to see the production of “Tecumseh” the students will have study Native American history of Ohio prior to viewing the show. The program is only viewed June 7 through August 31.
