Social Studies Study Guide Chapter 9: The Midwest Today Slide 2 Concepts to Know Slide 3 In 1910, many African Americans began to migrate to cities in the Midwest. African American family arrives in Chicago from the South Slide 4 Michigan has the largest Arab American community in the United States. Slide 5 Frank Lloyd Wright is famous for his work in architecture. Slide 6 Hub means a center of activity. Slide 7 The main way people use barges is to transport goods on rivers and lakes. Slide 8 The most mountainous part of the Plains states is the Ozark Plateau. Slide 9 Thomas Hart Benton is known for painting the rural areas of the Midwest. Slide 10 Farms are larger in the Plains states than they were 100 years ago. Slide 11 Urbanization is the shift of people to cities from rural areas. Slide 12 Food processing is an industry that depends on the Midwests farms and ranches. Slide 13 Full sentence answers: Each of these questions needs to be answered in a well written sentence. Entertainment and tourism are more recent service industries. Slide 18 Essay: An essay must have a minimum of 2 sentences. Write out a draft answer first, using your book to get facts. Have someone sit down and review your answer. Then write your final copy. Slide 19 How has technology changed agriculture in the past 100 years? Possible Answer: Technology used in agricultural has changed over the past 100 years. Farmers now use modern farm machines to harvest and grow more crops in less time. They also use computers to help them plan their farm work. Technology also allows farms to be larger and to need fewer workers.
