Ancient Mesopotamia’s Religion

In Ancient Mesopotamia, they had an unique system of religion in which they thought greatly influenced their

lives. As there were many different cities and small towns within Mesopotamia, each town was dedicated to a certain

god. In the center of each city/town there was a temple built for the city’s god. These temples (also known as Ziggurats) looked alike to a pyramid with a flat top.

As Ancient Mesopotamia was split into three different civilizations(Babylon, Assy, and Sumer) they all had different gods which served different purposes.

Ancient Egypt’s religionAlike to Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egyptians also believed in many different gods and goddesses. However, instead of their gods and goddesses taking place only in human form, some were also animals. Temples were also built in honour of their gods. The temples would usually contain gardens, memorials, statues, and a place of worship.

Isis

Ra was the sun god and most important towards the ancient Egyptians. He was

drawn as a man with a hawk head.

Isis was the mother goddess. The Egyptians thought that she would help people in need. Isis looked

like a regular women with a headdress shaped as a throne.

Osiris was the god of the afterlife, the underworld, and the dead. He was

believed to look like a half mummified man with green skin that symbolizes

rebirth.

Horus

Ancient Egyptians believed that Horus was the god of the sky. He was described as a man with the head of a hawk. Horus was also

the son of Ra, and Isis.

Modern Canada’s ReligionAs there are many different cultures within Canada, there is also a wide variety of religions, however currently the dominant religion is christianity. Christianity covers over 67% of Canada’s religion, however there is no official religion of Canada, as they believe that everybody has the right to believe in what they choose. Christians believe in only one god, in the name of Jesus. No temples are built in his honour, however on Sundays people will attend church, a ceremony in their gods honour. Christians base their beliefs on the holy bible, a book written thousands of years ago that contains stories about Jesus Christ.

Modern Canada’s religious holidays

Depending on what you believe in, many religious Canadians celebrate different holidays.

Christians main religious holidays:- Christmas: A holiday celebrated on December 25th each year which marks Christ’s birth. On this day, families usually get together to celebrate by having nice dinners and exchanging gifts.- Easter: Easter marks when christ was killed, then rose from his tomb. Families also get together on this day and have an easter egg hunt. (Which has nothing to do with Christianity.)

SOME OTHER RELIGIONS IN CANADA

Although Christianity covers over 67% of Canada’s religion, there are also many other religions that are popular throughout the country.-Jewish is a religion in which they also believe in Christ. Alike to christians, they also read the holy bible, execpt they call it the hebrew bible. The main difference between these two religions is that Christians believe that Jesus was the man version of god, while Jews believe he has not come yet. One of Jewish people’s religious holidays is Hanukkah, which is celebrated for one week.

-Muslim is another religion that is popular throughout Canada. They also believe in only one god, which they call Allah.

Ancient Greece’s Religion intro

Ancient Greeks believed in many different gods, and goddesses, which they thought ruled the world as they had existed a long time before mankind. They believed each god or goddess had different personalities, and flaws which made them unique from one another. The Greeks believed that their gods could control what happened to them in a positive, or negative way. So, many people would pray to their gods to ask for something good to happen. (For example, slaves may ask for freedom.)

The twelve Olympians of ancient Greece

Even though Ancient Greeks believed in many different gods and goddesses, the twelve Olympians of ancient Greece were the most powerful and looked up to of them all. They were believed to have superhuman powers and abilities. Each god also had a different responsibility which they were in charge to take care of.

HeraHera was the Queen of the gods, and was also the goddess of marriage and the heavens. Her two main symbols are a peacock, and a cow.

DemeterDemeter was the goddess

of the harvest. Her symbols included a sheaf

of wheat, and a torch. Her daughter was the beautiful

Persephone.

AthenaAthena was the goddess of

wisdom, crafts, and war. She was also the chief goddess of Athens,

which is why it is named after her. Her symbol is an owl.

ArtemisArtemis was the goddess of

the hunt, and was the protecter of animals and

young women. Her symbols included a deer, and hunting

dog.

AphroditeAphrodite was the goddess

of love, and beauty. Her symbols are a dove, seashell, and apple. Her consort was

Hephaestus.

ZeusZeus was the King of the gods. He was also the god of the sky and storms. Zeus’s two main

symbols include a lightning bolt, and an eagle. Zeus was married to the Queen of the gods, Hera.

PoseidonPoseidon was the god of the sea and earthquakes. His symbols include a dolphin, horse, and trident.

ApolloApollo was the god of music, poetry, and healing. He was

also the twin brother of Artemis, goddess of the hunt.

His symbols include a lyre, raven, bow, and laurel tree.

HermesHermes was the god of travel and trade, and was also the messenger of the gods. His symbols include wings, and a

staff twined with snakes.

DionysusDionysus was the god of wine and agriculture. His symbols

included vines, and ivy.

AresAres was the god of war and violence. His symbols

were a vulture, and a dog.

HephaestusHephaestus was the god of fire, metalwork, and building.

His symbols included a donkey, hammer and anvil. His

consort was Aphrodite.

Aztec’s Religion

The Aztecs had a very distinctive religion which was based on their fear of the world ending. They believed in many different gods, which represented elements of the earth. For example, Huitzilopochtli was the god of the sun, and the Aztecs sacrificed many people for their blood each day so that the sun would continue to rise each day. In fact, it is said that around 20,000 people were sacrificed when the
