Mission StatementIl Mosaico is the official publication of the Dante Alighieri Society, Michigan Chapter. Its purpose is to promote and preserve the Italian language and culture in the Italian-American Community, as well as in the community at large.

Dear DAS members,In 2006, for the first time since 1924, DAS of

Michigan signed the contract for its own offices. I still remember that challenging time, our fears,

our thousand questions on how we would support and sustain all the costs.

In the past eleven years, since we opened that first office, our wonderful group of volunteers worked together creating a strong synergy. This is the only legitimate answer to all our questions. Work and passion!

DAS of Michigan executive directors, directors, and committee members form a fantastic group of volunteers. All ideas, work, and passion start here! It is not always easy, rather it is not easy at all, for we all have our personal lives to tend to.

As DAS president, I cannot stop thanking our teachers for the quality of their work and the passion they put into what they do. I million thanks to our chairs of the Education and Culture committees for a job well done.

And of course, many thanks to the executive directors for all the work they do behind the scenes that holds DAS together.

At our 2017 Annual Gala, we announced that DAS has new offices. A new challenge toward a growing Chapter. We all stated: challenge accepted!

More than ever we need your support. Renew your membership, bring in new members, come to our events, and promote our Italian language classes for children and adults. These are the true DAS life feeds.

Progetto di volontariato nei Centri Ricreativi degli Oratori Lombardi per studenti americani di italiano.

Dopo tanti anni, nel 2017, la società Dante Alighieri del Michigan ha deciso di celebrare la Giornata della Dante diversamente. Ogni anno a settembre, con soci e amici della Dante Alighieri ci si incontra nella meravigliosa isola di Belle Isle a Detroit per deporre fiori al busto di Dante, imparare i versi della Divina Commedia o parlare di temi attuali come l’immigrazione. Nel 1921 gli italiani residenti a Detroit per commemorare i 600 anni dalla morte di Dante Alighieri fecero erigere il busto del Sommo Poeta, che fu deposto in questa bellissima isola sommersa dal verde e dalla pace. Questa opera fu commissionata al famoso maestro Raffaello Romanelli. Con il tempo e la dura realtà che

investì Detroit, il busto fu quasi dimenticato. È grazie alla Dante Alighieri del Michigan che si è ritornati a dare importanza a questo monumento tutto Italian handmade. Lo scorso settembre, il nostro socio Mitch Henderson, un appassionato ciclista, ha organizzato un giro in bici per riscoprire la città e la famosa isola di Belle Isle. La giornata perfetta ha fatto sì che ci fosse il tutto esaurito per questo divertente e salutare evento.

Il gruppo di partecipanti si è ritrovato alla Wheelhouse Detroit, lungo fiume, e attraversando monumenti e strade storiche sono arrivati presso il busto di Dante a Belle Isle. Il gruppo si è fermato più volte per imparare i segreti e le storie di queste meravigliose statue, monumenti e palazzi. All’arrivo presso il busto c’era un festoso banchetto ad aspettare il gruppo. E’ stato talmente un bell’evento che siamo già pronti a ripeterlo per il prossimo 8 settembre, con la speranza che più amici potranno parteciparvi.

DAS 2017 GalaMembers and friends of the Dante Alighieri Society

joined the Gala on October 13, 2017 at “The Reserve” in Birmingham, to celebrate another successful year of Italian classes and cultural events.

DAS President, Lia Adelfi, welcomed the guests and introduced the 2017 Honoree of the “Dante Distinctive Citizen Award”, which went to Giovanni "John" Zaretti for his years of effort and passionate work towards promoting Italian culture through Opera in Michigan, Ohio and Canada.

Since he moved to Detroit from New Your in 1979 he started his music endeavors by making presentations and organizing exhibits on the life of Giuseppe Verdi and the history of Opera. Subsequently he co-founded the Verdi Opera Theatre of Michigan/Statue of Enrico Caruso Society in 1988 (www.verdioperatheatre.com). He also instituted the annual Italian Songs and Arias Vocal Competition for Michigan High School Students.

After dinner, the guests enjoyed dancing to the notes of singer Ben Sharkey. His romantic style between swing and jazz standards, as well as more contemporary music, amused all the participants._______

I soci e gli amici della Società Dante Alighieri del Michigan hanno partecipato al Gala il 13 Ottobre 2017 tenutosi presso il ristorante “The Reserve” a Birmingham per celebrare un altro eccellente anno tra corsi di italiano ed eventi culturali.

La Presidente, Lia Adelfi, dopo il benvenuto ha presentato ai partecipanti il vincitore del premio che la Dante Alighieri ogni anno assegna a quei cittadini che si sono distinti per il loro impegno che quest’anno è andato al professore Giovanni Zaretti, per il suo grande impegno duranti questi anni nella promozione della cultura italiana attraverso l’Opera in Michigan, Ohio e Canada. Da quando si è trasferito da New York a Detroit nel 1979, ha iniziato il suo impegno musicale presentando conferenze e organizzando mostre sulla vita di Giuseppe Verdi e la storia dell’Opera. Successivamente ha collaborato alla fondazione della Società Teatro dell’ Opera Verdi in Michigan/Statua di Enrico Caruso nel 1988 (www.verdioperatheatre.com).

Giovani ha anche istituito la gara vocale annuale “Canzoni e Arie Italiane” per gli studenti di Scuole Superiori del Michigan.

Dopo la cena, gli invitati hanno potuto danzare sulle note del cantante Ben Sharkey. Il suo stile romantico che varia tra il swing e il jazz ha divertito tutti non tralasciando note più contemporanee.~~ Cristina Corteggiani

Ann Goldstein’s prolific translations include works by some of the most significant Italian writers of the past century or more, including some of those I love the most: Italo Calvino, Giacomo Leopardi, Primo Levi, Anna Maria Ortese, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Alessandro Baricco. Of course, the many people who attended the lecture held Friday, October 27 at the Wasserman Projects in Eastern Market know that Goldstein has also enabled “Ferrante fever” in the English-speaking world by translating the best-selling works of author Elena Ferrante.

The “Ferrante Fever” event was part of the celebration of the Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo, for which the 2017 theme was “ l ’ ital iano al cinema, l ’ ital iano nel cinema” (Italian in film). Ms. Goldstein’s lecture, then, also helped to eagerly anticipate the RAI/HBO coproduction, My Brilliant Friend, a 32-episode television series that according to

Il Mattino began filming on October 10 in Naples, Italy. Perhaps you know the famous Italian expression, “traduttore/traditore,” which equates translators with

traitors. The proverb casts doubt on the reliability of translations, suggesting that because of the complexities of language, a person who translates must inevitably betray the source text, and thus be herself a shady character. As Professor Marc Davie, who has translated works by Galileo Galilei, notes: “this is, of course, ironic, because translators conceive their task as being the very opposite of obfuscation.” Instead, they work, as Davie elaborates, “to make insights, experiences, perceptions which have been expressed in one language accessible to speakers of another.” Far from “betraying” texts, in fact, translators rewrite and reshape them, allowing them to speak in new voices to previously unimagined audiences. In this way, translators are artists, creators, and teachers. The great novelist Salman Rushdie writes in Imaginary Homelands (1991): “It is normally supposed that something always gets lost in translation; I cling, obstinately to the notion that something can also be gained.”

There is no doubt that English-language readers have gained something significant thanks to Ms. Goldstein’s translations. The novels by Elena Ferrante, in particular the Neapolitan quadrilogy that recounts the story of Elena Greco and Lila Cerullo, trace the confines of a popular neighborhood in Naples so vividly, and in such detail, that readers gain entire new worlds, new landscapes, new friends, and an extended (often dysfunctional) family over their course. In other words, we readers are ourselves translated into the spaces that Elena and Lila occupy, across thousands of pages and decades of contemporary Italian history. It is a transformative experience of cultural becoming that we share with people who speak more than 40 different languages, thanks to the work of translators the world over who, like Ms. Goldstein, know and love Italian.

In The Clash of Civilizations Over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio (2008), the Algerian-Italian writer Amara Lakhous proposes that “Translation is a journey over a sea from one shore to the other. Sometimes I think of myself as a smuggler: I cross the frontier of language with my booty of words, ideas, images, and metaphors.” Lakhous’ vivid idea, which was itself translated into English by Ms. Goldstein, calls on the etymological sense of translation: trans-latio, to carry something across, from one side to another. Culturally and linguistically, a translator’s job involves understanding just what is being sent on this journey, but also what awaits the story on the other side. It is a linguistic practice, certainly, but one that has to do with time and space: a translator carries a text into new geographic, mediatic, cultural, and historical contexts.

I love Lakhous’ notion of words and images as “booty” and the translator as a “smuggler,” because this gets at the revolutionary potential of translation and of language: it evokes how translation allows us to travel with or without passports, and to sneak into private and public lives, imaginations, histories, and material environments across the globe. As teachers of Italian, this kind of global translation—of language, of self—is also the freedom my colleagues and I hope to help our students access.

The translator/smuggler metaphor is particularly interesting in the case of Ferrante, because of course here, the furtive work of translation, which is often thought (incorrectly, I would say) to be a process that renders the translator “invisible,” has been reversed. Elena Ferrante is invisible, a pseudonym for an author whose identity we don’t know for certain. But Ann Goldstein, instead, was translated to us in Detroit, in the flesh. Not only do translators carry precious linguistic and cultural loot across textual shores; they are themselves precious resources, mediators of global culture whose work bridges distant shores and deepens our knowledge of the world. So it seems like a fitting coincidence that Ann Goldstein has been described in mineralogical terms by New Yorker editor David Remnick as "a diamond cutter," someone whose brilliant, sharp skills produce "refinement after refinement... that makes you a better you." Another of the editors who works with her says that Goldstein’s name on a book cover “now is gold,” thanks to the millions of copies of the Ferrante novels that bear her name.

Seconda Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel MondoDalla sorpresa per la prima settimana nel 2016 all’attesa

consapevole per la seconda Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel mondo.

Questo progetto del Governo italiano per tenere vive e attive tutte le tematiche discusse durante l’Expo di Milano si sta rivelando un grande successo. Riflettere su qualità, sostenibilità, cultura, sicurezza alimentare, identità, territorio e biodiversità si può fare in moltissimi modi e la Dante Alighieri Society del Michigan ha scelto di farlo mettendosi ai fornelli. Una serata diretta ed interpretata dagli chef Mario Rizzotti, chef dalla personalità esplosiva e dal curriculum ineccepibile, e Adam Weisell, che hanno creato e cucinato per noi un menù interessante, ricco di sapori e profumi. Ingredienti semplici ma di qualità che la tradizione culinaria italiana riesce a trasformare in piccoli capolavori. Si è sottolineato più volte che i prodotti vanno scelti con cura soprattutto quando, lontani dall’Italia, è più facile imbattersi in contraffazioni e prodotti a basso prezzo che in genere nascondono percorsi poco chiari di produzione e/o di provenienza delle materie prime.

Il pubblico, numeroso, presente alla dimostrazione ha potuto inoltre fare una degustazione di olio extra vergine di oliva proveniente da diverse regioni d’Italia. Fruttato, amaro, piccante, acidità, permanenza del gusto... sono solo alcune delle parole che abbiamo usato parlando di olio. Usare termini corretti mentre si assaggia un extravergine è qualcosa di fattibile anche per non esperti, se sapientemente guidati e capire che l’olio non è solo un condimento ma un vero ingrediente che influenza tutta la ricetta è un tassello importante nella conoscenza della nostra straordinaria cucina. Il progetto "Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel Mondo" è volto a promuovere a livello internazionale le tradizioni culinarie ed enogastronomiche quali segni distintivi dell'identità e della cultura italiana mettendo in risalto anche la nostra straordinaria ricchezza data dalla regionalità e infatti, nel menù della nostra splendida serata, era contemplato anche un piatto sardo: i malloreddus con salsiccia. Perché "l’Italia delle cento città e dei mille campanili è anche il paese delle cento cucine e delle mille ricette” e questa straordinaria ricchezza va difesa, protetta e divulgata.

Diceva Ennio Flaiano, nelle parole di Cesare Marchi, che “il nostro, più che un popolo, è una collezione. Ma quando scocca l’ora del pranzo, seduti davanti a un piatto di spaghetti, gli abitanti della penisola si riconoscono italiani come quelli d’oltre manica, all’ora del te, si riconoscono inglesi. Neanche il servizio militare, neanche il suffragio universale esercitano un simile potere unificante. L’unità d’Italia sognata dai padri del Risorgimento oggi si chiama pastasciutta”.

“The Extraordinary Italian Taste, II Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel Mondo” is an wonderful plan to support the internationalization of the Made in Italy brand and to promote High Italian Cuisine (Alta Cucina Italiana). The 2017 edition was identified by the logo “The Extraordinary Italian Taste, “alta cucina - vino di qualità”.

A live cooking demonstration and dinner was coordinated by Iron Chef America Judge Mario Rizzotti, acclaimed television personality and Italian culinary expert, together with Chef Adam Weisell, a Chicago based expert of Italian cuisine. 

The event was organized by the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan, the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago, in collaboration with the Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan, the Italian American Cultural Society (IACS), the Italian American Club of Livonia Charitable Foundation (IACLCF), under the auspices of the Consulate of Italy in Detroit. A big thank you to The Italian Pantry, LLC for providing Italian products: Campodoro di Licata, Acetaia Giusti, Azienda Pennisi, Villa Reale, Centonze and Zicaffè.

“La Befana vien di notte con le scarpe tutte rotte, con le toppe alla sottana, Viva viva la Befana”. Il 6 gennaio di quest’anno la Befana non si è lasciata sfuggire una tappa nella nuova sede della Dante Alighieri Society. Ha parcheggiato la sua scopa ed ha tirato fuori dal suo sacco caramelle, cioccolatini italiani e ... si’, anche il carbone.

La visita della Befana è stata accolta da numerose famiglie della Dante e della BBNC, che hanno trascorso un pomeriggio con tombola, mercante in fiera e la storia della Befana.

On January 6 the Befana did not miss a stop and arrived at the new offices of the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan. She parked her broom and pulled Italian candies and chocolates and ... yes, even coal out of her bag. The visit of the Befana was welcomed by many families of the Dante and BBNC, who spent an afternoon with bingo, Mercante in Fiera and the story of the Befana. For this wonderful afternoon, we thank Marianna who, with her smile and her sweetness, listened and embraced children and adults by renewing and spreading the message of the Epiphany that is a symbol of internationalism and self-giving.~~Monica Buscaroli

Viva Viva il Carnevale!

Lo spirito del Carnevale ha rallegrato una grigia domenica di febbraio. Ragazzi e bambini della Dante Arcobaleno ad Ann Arbor, si sono scatenati in giochi, balli e scherzi caratteristici dell’allegria carnevalesca. Il tutto condito con ghiotte specialità regionali!  Allegria!

2018, l’Anno del Cibo ItalianoDopo il 2017 “Anno dei Borghi”, l’anno corrente verrà ricordato dagli amanti del nostro Paese come l’Anno del Cibo Italiano. Così il Ministero dei beni e delle attività culturali e del turismo, insieme al Ministero delle politiche agricole, alimentari e forestali, inaugura questa speciale iniziativa con una campagna social tutta incentrata sulla rappresentazione del buono e del gustoso nel mondo dell’arte, con alimenti e piatti d’autore, realizzati con tempera e chiaro scuro, in marmo o su ceramica, belli da concepirne profumo e gusto - www.anaso.it

DAS long Member Giuliano Zuccato, age 85, passed away on December 14, 2017.

A native of Italy, it was a serendipitous path from a river-powered sawmill near Venice where he cut raw timber for the locals to the design studios of Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan.

His work was brought to the attention of a local newspaper and, as a result, a patron of the arts, suggested the possibility to look at car design as a way to make a living. Zuccato retired from Ford Motor Company in 1988 after 31 years as a master sculptor. Giuliano was part of the team that designed the 1964 Mustang. In addition, he frequently hosted Opera concerts to help young music students in their studies.

His philosophy of life and longevity was to never stop evolving and experimenting. “I am too busy living, death will have to wait for me” he said with sage confidence.Our deepest condolences to his family. Giuliano will surely be missed!

Holocaust Remembrance DayTo mark Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, every year the Dante Alighieri Society (DAS) of Michigan organizes activities commemorating those Italians who suffered persecution under the Nazi occupation during World War II and as a result of the Racial Laws imposed by the Fascist government.

Music played an integral role in daily life even under Nazism. Therefore, for the 2018 Holocaust Remembrance Day, DAS has invited Davide Casali, clarinetist, conductor and artistic director of the Viktor Ullmann Festival, and Elisa Frausin, pianist and first cello of the stable orchestra of the Ullmann Festival, to perform music by composers deported to concentration camps and Nazi ghettos, and play Degenerate Music, that is, music considered decadent and harmful by the Nazi government. The aim of the duo is to revive the

musical repertoire of Italian Jewish composers such as Leo Sinigaglia, Renzo Massarani, and Alberto Gentili, unfortunate authors who were forced to suffer during the Third Reich’s physical and cultural annihilation.________________
