Hawke’s Bay is a region gifted with the building blocks to lead the renaissance of the primary sector. A generally benign climate, fertile soils and a depth of human talent place it at an advantage in the production of food to feed a hungry world. It is appropriate then that we have an event that recognises those that take these resources and build some of the leading primary sector business in New Zealand. The Hawke’s Bay A&P Society is delighted to bring you the Napier Port Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards; a stage on which we celebrate the leading primary sector businesses and its people.

Further, we are pleased to recognise Napier Port as the naming rights sponsor of the Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards, which is a reflection of the Port’s deep and important connection with the region’s Primary Industries. The Napier Port Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards will bring together a range of awards and competitions that recognises excellence in the primary industries. This journey started 43 years ago with The Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year that has seen the leading Sheep, Beef and mixed farming businesses recognised. Along the way we have seen the inclusion of the Laurie Dowling Memorial Award for service to rural industry, the Lawson Robinson Hawke’s Bay A&P Scholarship for emerging leaders, the Hastings District Council Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Industry Leader of the Year Award that will recognise those that lead from the front and the Pan Pac Hawke’s Bay Farm Forester of the Year Award for mixed forestry and farming businesses. The journey is not over yet however, as we are building further recognition awards to celebrate the diversity of the primary industries in our great region.New for 2016 is the Bayleys Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Professional of the Year Award. This will recognise an individual who through their knowledge, skills and application has made an outstanding contribution to lifting the performance of the primary industries. So join us for this journey; whether you are an aspiring contestant, sponsor or interested party as we celebrate those that drive our regional economy and enable us to confidently take our place as a safe and sustainable food producer for the rest of the world.

It is Napier Port’s pleasure to again sponsor the Napier Port Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards.

With around 95 percent of all port exports from the region, our success is largely a reflection of the many productive and innovative businesses and individuals that make up Hawke’s Bay’s primary sector, and the backbone of our economy.

At the Port, we are proud of our role in taking Hawke’s Bay’s produce to the world, and eager to play our part in shared success. Supporting these awards is just one of the ways we can get behind Hawke’s Bay’s exporters and importers to do this.

The ports sector, like the primary sector, is one with many opportunities and challenges and we need to continually adapt and evolve to lift productivity and performance to remain competitive and relevant.

It’s a never-ending process. So, it’s important to take time out to acknowledge the hard work, innovation and to reflect as we position ourselves for the future. I look forward to doing exactly that with the Hawke’s Bay primary sector at the awards dinner. The port is committed to working together in the coming years with the primary sector to build a more vibrant, healthier and stronger Hawke’s Bay economy. I hope to see you on 21 April 2016.

Celebrating Excellence

Page 6: · PDF fileThe Society is a not ... challenges and we need to continually adapt and ... Our strategy is a long-term approach to how we are re-engineering our co-operative

The Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year awards identify, promote and celebrate excellence in pastoral farming in Hawke’s Bay. Silver Fern Farms is a proud supporter of the competition as it unearths talented farmers and recognises them for their abilities to produce inspirational quality food.

Consumers in premium markets want red meat of the quality Silver Fern farms’ Farmers of the year produce. We believe that greater returns for farmers in the long-term will come from focusing on delivering what consumers want. This is the essence of our plate to pasture strategy.

Building brands consumers trust and pay a premium for, locally and in offshore markets, takes time. Our strategy is a long-term approach to how we are re-engineering our co-operative. It is supported by people in our business who continually improve the everyday things we do – from increasing yields in plants, to finding the most effective freight options to get our food to market. As we make progress on our strategy we hope to make an important contribution to building a more sustainable future for one of New Zealand’s most significant primary sectors.

Our strategy fits well with the objectives of this prestigious competition. Recognising achievement, providing feedback and investing in the future of our farmers and farm leaders is important to our co-operative.

The Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year Award is an opportunity to acknow- ledge farming achievements and leadership. We are proud to be involved and we hope they encourage farmers to continue to think of the experience they deliver for consumers.

When Craig and Trish arrived at the High Country block they realised what a close knit operation they had entered and how much opportunity for improvement had arisen.

As a team, they believe they have a good trust arrangement with our shareholders, agents, vets, contractors and farm suppliers. Their support is the backbone of the farm and that is how they have built the outstanding team they have today. Family and staff take huge amounts of pride in achieving high standards both on and off farm.

Converting our wonderful land, water and sunshine into produce to supply to the world and our domestic markets is key to growing our GDP and jobs, and therefore our prosperity.

Recognising that the health and wealth of our district is inextricably linked to what we grow, Hastings District Council gladly backs the Primary Sector Awards as part of our efforts to support agriculture in its broadest sense in our region.

In particular, our sponsorship of the Industry Leader of the Year award recognises the importance of those people who champion and lead the sector. Leadership on the farm, in the market and around innovation are critically important to what is our key economic driver. Leadership requires vision, passion and articulation of ideas. This is our small way of recognising this contribution.

The Hastings District Council has a key strategic priority of creating 1000 new jobs over a five year period. As well as supporting initiatives such as these awards, council has developed the ‘Great

Things Grow Here’ platform to bring alive our efforts to promote economic opportunities in the region. The primary sector, with the exciting future it offers the people of Hawke’s Bay, is a large part of that.

The Country team at Bayleys Hawke’s Bay are not just any team; they have over 200 years of practical farming experience. Their collective time in real estate totals over 70 years with a track record that is second to none and have recorded over half a billion dollars of sales in the rural sector between them.

Bayleys specialist Country division was formed in 1999, in response to our clients throughout New Zealand looking to sell or acquire rural property. In just 16 years, Bayleys has become this country’s number one rural real estate brand, with our dedicated team of country salespeople selling more farmland in New Zealand than any other agency.

Given Bayleys competitors have been entrenched in the market for decades, this represents unprecedented growth. This level of success can be attributed to the capability of the organisation and the quality of the specialist salespeople within the group.

Our clients are at the core of everything we do so we’ve structured our Country business to provide solutions that achieve great results, whatever the challenge.

We believe it’s important to have the knowledge and unique understanding of different segments to ensure you get the best possible outcome. We have salespeople from around the country who specialise in handling the sale of dairy, sheep and beef, cropping, stations, deer, viticulture, horticulture, forestry, high country and lifestyle properties.
