LEARNING OBJECTIVE #1

• Students will demonstrate understanding of the techniques used for observation of social phenomena.

ASSESSMENT MEASURES

• Students will conduct content analysis, participant observation, or field study of a particular social setting or visual media, and complete an essay, scored by two raters using a criterion list.

• Students will demonstrate understanding of hypotheses development in the social sciences.

ASSESSMENT MEASURES

• Students will create and apply hypotheses to explain correlations between social variables (ex.: education and income, unemployment and crime rates, social class and religious affiliation, etc.) in objectively-scored short answer test items.

• Students will successfully demonstrate understanding of the logic of basic statistical measures (measures of central tendency, correlation, statistical significance, etc.) on short answer test items scored with criterion list.
