When purchasing a lounge at Beyond Furniture you have the option to choose between 3 types of leather, Top Leather, Semi-Aniline Leather and Aniline Leather. They are top quality leathers, and offer different characteristics, different looks and different maintenance requirements, so the following is an outline of each, to help you make an informed decision.

TOP GRAIN LEATHERTop grain leather is premium grade leather that is made from the

top layer of the hide. The surface of the leather will be lightly buffed

to reduce the appearance of imperfect natural markings such as

scarring or blemishes. The leather is then dyed with opaque colour

pigments, the buffing process and dying process ensures the finished

colour is even. The leather is then embossed with a grain pattern

that ensures uniformity on the hide, the leather is finished with a thin

protective layer. Top grain leather is the easiest leather to maintain,

as the pigmentation and protective coating ensure its durability, and

provide resistance to wear, soiling and fading.

SEMI-ANILINE LEATHERSemi-Aniline Leather is leather that has been lightly dyed with

pigments, and then a very thin protective layer is applied. Since

there is only minimal buffing of the leather (some buffing may occur

to smooth out imperfections and ensure uniformity), the natural

characteristics and markings on the hide will be visible, the light

pigmentation and thin protective layer offer good colour uniformity

and durability. There is no embossing process, so the natural grain

of the animal is visible, and variances will occur, subtle distinctions

between the natural grain and pigmentation of the hide surface

create an aesthetic quality unique to semi-aniline leather. Since only

a thin protective layer is applied, the leather remains very soft to the

touch; semi-aniline leather is an ideal choice for people who enjoy the

qualities of natural leather but with the benefits of color consistency

and increased durability.

ANILINE LEATHERAniline leather is top grain leather that is dyed for colour only without

any pigments applied. The leather is coloured all the way through

by applying a transparent dye, immersing the hide in a dye bath.

Only the highest quality hides can be used in this process as the

transparent finish allows the natural markings of the leather to show

through.

The leather selected to upholster Beyond Furniture’s sofa’s is sourced from the reputable Italian tanneries Matrotto Italia (of Gruppo Mastrotto spa) and Peretti Gruppo, both located in the important tannery hub of Vincenza, Italy. These tanneries are certified by the International quality assessment institutions to ensure the quality of the leather used, and they manufacture leather for reputable companies such as Audi, and Mercedes.

TOP GRAIN LEATHER - ORVIETO & TORELLOMade in Italy with raw hides primarily sourced from South AmericaTop grain Leather with strong fibres resistant to tears, when compared with leather splits or fabric. Top Grain leather naturally breathes and regulates temperature as it absorbs and releases humidity through the pores, this is not possible in splits or synthetic leather. Appearance: MattThickness: Orvieto is 1.3-1.5mm. Torello is 1.4-1.6mm Corrected: the leather has been lightly sanded (buffed) to reduce the visibility of imperfect natural markings on the raw hide. Pigmented (dyed) with protected colour finishing on leather surfaces, this serves to waterproof, ensures colour consistency all over the surface, and provides excellent durability. The pigmenting process ensures it is well-protected against household stains, and resistant to fading. Embossing: Orvieto is embossed with ‘Dollaro Americano Print’ creating a uniform appearance and greater texture on the leather surface. Torello is embossed with ‘Sissi’ print (larger grain than the Dollaro Americano Print) for greater texture and a heavier grain effect. Embossing is a process that re-creates the leather surface pattern ensuring a perfectly even surface, texture and colour. The leather also undergoes a dry milling process which stabilizes the leather and ensures softness. Orvieto & Torello leathers are the most popular category for high-end contemporary sofas.

SEMI-ANILINE LEATHER - KINGMade in Italy with raw hides primarily sourced from EuropeTop grain Leather with strong fibres resistant to tears, when compared with leather splits or fabric. Top Grain leather naturally breathes and regulates temperature as it absorbs and releases humidity through the pores; this is not possible in splits or synthetic leather. Appearance: Semi-GlossyThickness: 1.3-1.5mmSemi Aniline: The leather has been lightly buffed in areas to smooth out imperfections whilst its natural characteristics are preserved. This type of process is also referred to as ‘half grain’ or ‘mezzo fiore’. Slightly Pigmented (dyed): with protected colour finishing on leather surfaces, this serves to waterproof, ensures colour consistency all over the surface, and provides excellent durability. The pigmentation of this leather is done with a very thin, yet reliable and resistant layer of high quality pigment, the leather will resist household stains and fading.

ANILINE LEATHER - MARCOMade in Italy with raw hides primarily sourced from EuropeTop grain Leather with strong fibres resistant to tears, when compared with leather splits or fabric. Top Grain leather naturally breathes and regulates temperature as it absorbs and releases humidity through the pores, this is not possible in splits or synthetic leather. Appearance: Semi-Glossy with silky HandThickness: 1.3-1.5mmAniline: the leather is not corrected or buffed, preserving all the natural characteristics of the leather. The most perfect hides are selected to produce Marco leather as it is being left in its natural form. The appeal of Full grain leather lies in the unique characteristics of the hide; the markings of the animal are evident and make every piece of leather completely unique. Aniline based leather: drum dyed with a transparent dye containing aniline. The hide is immersed in the dye meaning the colour is absorbed through the thickness of the leather, colour variation will occur where the hide thickness varies. Aniline is a colourless liquid which is used to help open the pores of the leather. Aniline leather has virtually no protective layer on the surface which makes it the softest and finest upholstery leather, though without this additional protective layer, aniline leather can be scratched and will fade faster when in direct sunlight, making it higher maintenance than pigmented leather. No embossing has been applied to the surface; the visible grain is natural with variations visible. Without embossing, and applying a simple milling process the natural softness of the hide is preserved. Marco leather uses the highest quality hides, and is the choice for people who appreciate the unique characteristics & personality of leather. The leather will continue to change & evolve with time, increasing its softness and personality with usage.

Such natural markings or characteristics include scars, scratches

and wrinkles. Other than the colour, the appearance of this kind of

leather is entirely natural. The minimal processing also allows the

leather to breathe, making it a comfortable choice for both hot and

cold weather. Aniline leather is for those who appreciate its natural

characteristics, the softness & luxury. Without any protective coatings,

Aniline leather requires more maintenance than pigmented leather,

and it is more susceptible to fading and scratching.

Fine leather is soft, luxurious and resilient; the hides are from well grown cows, the superior hide selections and unique tanning process helps to create a supple, luxurious feel which will enhance and develop a rich patina over time. With proper care, a good leather lounge will last more than 10 years. By simply maintaining regular use of leather cleaner and protector, and an ink remover for tough stains, your leather lounge will retain a clean, stylish and effortless look.

The selected leathers are top grain or full grain hides that retain the natural characteristic’s of leather whilst providing quality, easy to care for upholstery for everyday living.

No embossing has been applied to the surface; the visible grain is natural with variations visible. The hide endures a natural dry-milling process to ensure the natural softness of the hide is preserved. It is an ideal leather choice for people who enjoy the luxurious feel & natural characteristic of full grain leather, but want something easy to maintain, and resilient.
