    from our editor

    Erin McLaughlin [email protected]

More than a decade ago, the great room became a

hot new trend. Opening the kitchen up to a living area

allowed families to spend time together while doing

different activities in the same space. The kitchen

suddenly became a more relaxed spot for socializing

the heart of the home and it hasnt looked back since.

Ive always tried to include a great room in my own

renovations, my favourite being the reno of the tiny

1880s rowhouse that I called home during my early 30s.

There was a diminutive uninsulated covered porch that

had been added to the back of the house in the 1920s,

which, though charming, was useless. Even so, when

I bought the house, I had a vision of a cozy addition with

a small replace and a pullout couch perfect for guests.

When I began my renovation, I had to apply for a

permit to tear down the original porch and build an

addition on a solid foundation. As I worked on the draw-

ings, I tried to incorporate every available square inch

of space. I was able to enlarge the room by a few feet,

which allowed me to have a galley-style kitchen with

a quaint living area. Of course, thats where I ended up

spending every waking moment of my time at home!

Im not the only one who went above and beyond to

get the coveted great room. This issue of Style at Home

is devoted to homeowners and designers who have cre-

ated the ultimate fusion of cooking, dining and living.

Our design editor, Jessica Waks, built her great room

(see Heart of Gold, page 78) by expanding her house

by 540 square feet, while designer Ingrid Oomen knocked

down one wall and opened up another to create a kitch-

en with an eat-in area thats connected to the family

room (see Into the Grey, page 72).

In my current home, Im lucky to have had a kitchen

spacious enough to integrate a breakfast nook and a

seating area in front of a replace. While I cook, my

teenagers do homework at the kitchen island and my

husband nods off in front of the re. Like most families

nowadays, we have such a limited amount of time

together, and our great room helps us make the most

    of every minute.

natural beautyMy heart skipped a beat when I came across

the story Cabin in the Woods on page 128

of the December 2013 issue. I absolutely love

    Youve opened coffee shops

choose the coffee roasting company La Colombe for this initiative?

our heart is in the neighbourhood, so we

wanted to create a place that would provide not

only great cofee but also a community space

where locals could get to know one another

and attend classes. We chose la colombe

If you live in a condo or an older house, you know that

closet space is at a premium. Adding a closet or expanding

an existing one will help to increase the functionality and

value of your home. Or, if its a low-cost, exible solution

youre after, stand-alone wardrobes are always an option.

    text scott mcgillivray

    closets

A lot of people ask me if converting a small bedroom into a walk-in closet is worth it. Its the simplest and most obvious solution to a lack of closet space in a house, but before you commit to this type of reno, theres something to consider rst. Does your home have four (or more) bed-

rooms? Te most appealing type of property to the majority of prospect-ive buyers is a detached house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Bringing your home down to two bedrooms eliminates a large portion of the home-buying population, so any value you gain by adding the big closet is erased. However, if you plan on staying in your home for the

next 20 years and this is a just for you renovation, go for it.

Youd be surprised where you can squeeze in

closet space. Consider, for instance, the often-

    overlooked area underneath your

staircase. With a little ingenuity, you can really

gain some valuable extra storage. If its your bed-

room closet thats lacking, you may be able to get

away with widening or deepening it or

even building a new one by expand-

ing into an adjacent room. Just be sure

the other space is large enough to give up that

square footage without losing its functionality.

Known for her timeless and elegant interiors,

    Atlanta-based suzanne Kasler approaches design

with an appreciation for tradition and a modern

spin. Here, the acclaimed designer shares her style,

her inspiration and a few of her favourite things.

    PRODUCER Jessica Waks

What makes your style so timeless? i work on the foundation of tradition,

nessing the architectural details of a

space rst and then going from there.

the key is to get the foundation right.

Describe your approach to design.i always place a lot of importance on edit-

ing. i want a space to look decorated but

not overdecorated, so i always say, edit as

much as you decorate. im also known for

my use of colour. i like to create an archi-

tectural envelope where i paint the walls,

trim and ceiling the same colour. i use a lot

of neutrals and strategically bring in an

accent, but the way i use it sometimes

gives the impression that theres more

of it in the space than there actually is.

Whats your signature palette?oatmeal, ax and white classic

    and timeless.

What are your favourite paint colours?i love the Benjamin moore whites (like

White Dove oc-17) and Glidden blues

    (like limoges Blue 30BG56/045)

    theyre my go-to colours.

I want a space to look decorated but not overdecorated, so I always say, Edit as much as you decorate.

    This Connecticut

    powder room is as

    girlie as it is glam.

Youve designed collections for some great companies, from furn-iture for Hickory Chair to lighting for Visual Comfort & Co. to fabric for Lee Jofa. Is there a particular design that stands out for you?Its interesting to me that the alex-

andra chair has become such a

signature piece. I love its quatre-

foil design a popular element in

    both fashion and architecture and

proportions. I named it after my

daughter. one of my favourite fab-

rics is the pattern I used on the

inside of my book cover: atelier

    stripe, an upholstery-weight silk.

Many of your interiors include beautiful artwork or groupings of prints. Do you have a favourite artist you like to use?Dusty Grifth (dustygrifth.com) is

one of my favourites. I love his use

of colour and his encaustic pieces.

How do you like to use fabrics?Im a fan of mixing textures often

in the same colour like casual linen

with beautiful velvet and silk. linen

dresses down projects that feel more

dressed up. I love layering textures

just as much as I love using colour.

Is there a specic design aesthetic that inspires you?almost everything from France

    namely that modern sensibility

    combined with some antique pieces.

    But I gravitate toward traditional,

fancy and modern French style as

    opposed to French country.

What is your strategy for combining pieces?Whats popular today is what I call

a random mix, which gives a real

sense of style and reects the person-

ality of the homeowners. mixing high

and low is also huge really expen-

sive pieces paired with things that are

    inexpensive but sentimental to you.

Where do you like to shop for antiques? 1stdibs is a great resource. the site

allows you to shop all over the world.

Its very exciting, but theres nothing

quite like seeing things in person,

so I venture to all the little antiques

shops when I travel. scott antique

market in atlanta is one of note.

What are your no-fail entertaining tips?Get ready a day ahead so you

can enjoy the event. If possible,

arrange your own owers so they

stay true to your aesthetic. Infuse

    subtle personal details, like ribbon

    that coordinates with your theme

colours and using it to tie your nap-

    kins and silverware together. Also,

ensure that your event isnt too

overdone you want it to feel spe-

cial, not leave an impression of it

being too much work to entertain.

Where do you typically nd design inspiration?I nd a lot of it when travelling

and shopping in any kind of retail

store. It doesnt have to be in Paris

or someplace exotic; I can be in-

spired when I go to New York or

Chicago. I go to shops in specic

    neighbourhoods to see the person-

alities, as well as colour palettes

of the new season. Im always inu-

enced by what I see, especially in

    some of the smaller boutiques

    around the country.

On a trip to Milan, I was so taken

by the black and white artwork in

a concept store that I bought the

artists book. Its pages are made

to be torn out and framed, which

I did when I got home, and they

ended up making the cover of my

    book! Everyone loves how graphic

the display is, but I think its also

very timeless. It shows how design-

ers can translate a piece of inspir-

    ation so diferently.

    THE PROBLEMThe 730-square-foot main

    oor of this Toronto family

    home previously had a

    constrained layout, which

    divided and closed off the

    kitchen from the dining and

    living rooms. To make the

    most of the spaces generous

    square footage, the home-

    owners called on designer

    Melissa Davis of Catherine +

    Davis to create an open-

    concept plan that would

    encourage family

    togetherness.

THE SOLUTIONS Melissa treated the entire

main oor as a single space,

    paying close attention to its

    layout, functionality, organ-

    ization and aesthetic.

    To maximize square foot-

    age, the main oor was

    divided into three zones:

    kitchen, living and dining.

    She kept the palette clean

    and consistent white walls

    and dark hardwood oors

    to avoid visual breaks

    between the areas.

    Plenty of storage was

    incorporated throughout in

    the form of seamless white

    cabinetry that seems to

    blend right into the walls,

    keeping the home virtually

    free of clutter.

    She added an 11-foot-wide

    bank of windows with

    modern French doors in the

dining area to open it up to

    the outdoors. Says Melissa:

    This was about breaking

    down the divisions between

    common areas.

for most people, bathroom style is all about the tubs, the taps and the tiles, but Vancou-ver designer Andrea Johnson prefers to think outside the big bath stores. Bathrooms can often be so stark and utilitarian, she says.

Although they need to serve a purpose, I

love the idea of adding extra decorative ele-

ments to make them feel more beautiful than

functional, she says. So when it came time

to renovate her own master ensuite last

    summer, Andreas inspiration went beyond

the clichd spa look. I wanted it to feel

like an extension of my bedroom, she says.

One of the key design elements that

takes the space from banal bathroom to

    luxe retreat is the herringbone-patterned

oor. I love this tile because it looks a bit

like wood, says Andrea. As soon as I saw

it, I knew I wanted to lay it in a herringbone

pattern. Its a great way to customize a basic

tile and make it look more expensive. Soft

accents like the drapery (The bay window

was just calling out for something!) and the

graphic rug (Its the perfect piece to bring

colour and pattern into the room, as well as a

touch of warmth) add to the boudoir charm.

For a little glamour, Andrea included warm

metals throughout in the vanity hardware,

light xtures and side table. She also incor-

porated curved lines, as seen in the bathtub,

sconces and mirrors, to soften the space.

Youre looking at a lot of hard surfaces in

a bathroom, so bringing in curves gives it

a feminine quality, she says. The result: a

master bath that youd never want to leave.

    above Designer andrea Johnson incorporated

decorative elements, such as drapery, a gold-

framed side table, a graphic rug and artwork,

to elevate her master bathroom from utilitarian

    to sophisticated sanctuary.

  • Decorators Nicola Marc and Beth Gold of Marc Gold Interiors

knew they were in for a challenge when they set out to make

over this 800-square-foot condo in Montreals trendy Le Pla-

teau neighbourhood. This was the rst time that we had

worked on a project where the client didnt want any colour,

says Nicola. As a result, we had to look closely at texture,

scale, shape and form. The clients only other request was

tied to the desire for a soft palette in grey and pebble. She

wanted her new home to be a calming, serene

retreat a place she could return to after a busy

    workday and sigh contentedly.

It was lovely to be involved from the very begin-

ning, says Nicola, who was part of the initial hunt

for a suitable condo. When they came across this

    one-bedroom suite in a renovated 1920s building,

all three agreed that it offered the right bones,

needing just a few modications. The hardwood

ooring was stripped and nished in a soft white-

washed grey, custom wood radiator coverings

were built, the wall between the dining room and

living room was removed to open up the main liv-

ing space for entertaining, and the lime green

    galley-style kitchen was utterly gutted.

There was a lot of discussion about opening up

the wall in the kitchen, too, but the client preferred

that the space remain out of sight while shes enter-

taining. In fact, the only sightline into the kitchen

was designed to appear un-kitchen-like. The wall in

view was covered in a seagrass wallpaper, which

provides warmth and texture and balances the

kitchens custom nishes (like the Carrara marble

mosaic oor) and sleek stainless steel appliances.

Throughout the rest of the condo, there was an

equal devotion to balancing sharp lines with deli-

cate curves, softening glints of shiny metal with

milky porcelain and enhancing natural textures

with subtle patterns. The effect is an intimate tone-on-tone

space that feels very harmonious, says Nicola. I think its

safe to say that we lived up to the challenge!

  • or nearly 160 years, the magnicent Ker Cavan house in Guelph, Ont., one of Canadas few remaining examples

of the Tudor take on Gothic revival style, has been a point of

architectural and historic interest. But to urban heritage prop-

erty developers Kirk Roberts and Peregrine Wood, Ker Cavan is

simply home. Here, their children Liam, 18, and Aleda, 16

play video games, hang out and throw parties for their friends,

albeit beneath 19th-century plaster ceilings, original Gothic

archways and mouldings embellished with Tudor roses.

When the couple purchased the house ve years ago, it hadnt

been updated in ages, and its gorgeous Gothic features had

become a backdrop to poor design think outdated xtures and

nishes, as well as lots of pine furniture (or, as Peregrine called

it, the indignities of a bad 1980s faux Victorian re-muddle).

But the task of correcting these cosmetic glitches paled in com-

parison to the actual renovation, which presented manifold

demands. Some were expected, such as the strict compliance to

heritage bylaws, and some not-so-expected, like the armies of

carpenter ants hidden in the kitchen ceiling and garage and the

water entering the house in 18 places (none of which came from

    the roof) on four levels.

The extensive inside-out top-to-bottom overhaul took almost

three years and included gutting each of the ve bathrooms, the

kitchen and the basement; restoring plaster work and mould-

    ings; updating the replaces, plumbing and electrical systems;

landscaping and regrading the entire property to bring it to

code; and installing proper drainage. The only job we didnt

For help with the decor, Peregrine and Kirk enlisted designer

Linda Leibel of Linda Leibel Designs, who recommended paint

colours and sourced antiques to balance out all the modern

assisted with lighting choices, sourcing traditional xtures for

helped us pick things that would jar the senses a bit, like the

It catches your eye because of its sheer scale.

Its this condent approach to design that allows the homes

remarkably formal features to mesh so seamlessly with the fam-

ilys everyday life, which includes the usual chaos generated by

teenagers and pets (Ker Cavan is home to Kenya the tabby cat
