sChool nICkname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

sChool Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

Cody whITe

In his fourth year atop the Central Oklahoma program is Cody White, who has led the Bronchos to the national tournament every year at the helm.

White has led the Bronchos to three consecutive 40-win seasons, with UCO having qualified for the NCAA Di-

vision II national tournament appearances each year in going 122-57.

Cody came to UCO in 2012 as the program’s first-ever full-time assistant coach and helped guide the Bronchos to the first women’s national champi-onship in any sport in school history in 2013.

He played a key role during a sensational season that saw UCO claim the Mid-America Intercolle-giate Athletics Association crown in its first year in the league and then go a perfect 9-0 in NCAA post-season play to take the national title, clipping Kutztown 5-2 in a thrilling finals contest to end a 51-11 campaign.

Cody and head coach Genny Stidham were selected the Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association after the season.

White was named interim head coach on Aug. 9, 2013 after Stidham took over at Texas Woman’s and went on to lead the Bronchos to another outstanding season in 2014.

UCO finished runner-up in the MIAA regular season standings and earned an at-large bid into the national tournament, going 1-2 in the Central Regional in finishing the season 41-17.

The Bronchos came back with another banner campaign in 2015 as White led UCO to a second straight MIAA runner-up finish. The Bronchos made the program’s fourth consecutive trip to the national tournament and ended with a 41-20 record.

Central ended up as league runners-up for the third straight year in 2016 and finished with a 40-20 record in making it to the national tourney for the fifth time in a row.

Cody came to UCO after serving as assistant base-ball and softball coach at Edmond Memorial High School. He was on the baseball staff for four years,

Jon hunTer

Now in his fourth year as Central Oklahoma’s top assistant coach is Jon Hunter, who came to the Bronchos in the fall of 2013 from Edmond North High School.

Hunter has helped lead UCO to an 122-57 record the past three years, with the Bronchos having had three consecutive 40-win seasons while making appearances in the NCAA Division II national tournament each year.

Jon was an assistant basketball coach for the Huskies from 1999-04, helped with baseball from 2004-13 and was a softball assistant from 2008-13.

Hunter helped lead the ENHS baseball squad to the 2012 Class 6A state championship and he was the interim softball head coach in the fall of 2012 when the Huskies captured the Class 6A state title.

A native of Clinton, Hunter played collegiately at St. Gregory’s before graduating from UCO.

Jon and his wife, Traci, have two daughters (Abby and Halle).

kelsey berlIn

Helping the Central Oklahoma program as a graduate assistant coach for the second season is Kelsey Berlin.

Berlin spent just one year at UCO after transferring in from Division I Arkansas. She pitched in 31 games with 20 starts in 2015, finishing 11-8 with two saves and a 3.24 earned run average while throwing three shutouts and striking out 77 batters in 140 1/3 innings. She moved into a student assistant role last season, earning her

degree last Spring.Kelsey was a prep star at Northwest High School in Wichita, Kan.

before spending two years at Butler County Community College. She went 15-6 with five shutouts and three saves there while also batting .370 with 24 doubles, nine home runs and 79 runs batted in.

Berlin spent the 2014 season at Arkansas, seeing limited action for the Razorbacks.

2017 season ouTlook

Ready to make a run at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship and contend for the NCAA Division II national title in 2017 is a Central Oklahoma team that appears loaded

at virtually every position on the field. The Bronchos return 12 letterwinners from last year’s 40-20 squad

– including eight who started at least 28 games – and added several high-ly-touted newcomers, with UCO set to feature a high-octane offensive attack and talented pitching staff.

“This team has already bought into the roles we’ve asked each player to take and they all have a strong belief that collectively we can reach our ultimate goal,” said fourth-year head coach Cody White, who is 122-57 at the UCO helm. “We have a lot of experience and everybody is excited about what we can accomplish this season if we stay focused and come out ready to play every day.”

Headlining the long list of returners is junior shortstop and All-American Morgan Heard, who is among the finest players in the country with her sensational all-around ability.

The Bronchos also have back two first-team All-MIAA performers in senior catcher Tori Collet and senior third baseman Lexi Watson, while sophomore outfielder JoBi Heath and sophomore first baseman Carli Jones were second-team All-MIAA picks a year ago.

Seniors Ashleigh Tramel and Jessi Walker and junior Shelby Carel also saw extensive starting duty last year, while junior Carrie Abrams and sophomores Lauren Kelley, Abbie Lancaster and Mo Selman all lettered in back-up roles.

An added bonus is the return of three-year starter Brooke Zukerman, a senior outfielder and two-time second-team All-MIAA selection who missed 2016 to injury.

Toss in some impact newcomers, led by two Division I transfers in pitchers Jayden Chestnut and Peyton Walker, and it’s easy to see why the Bronchos are excited about their prospects for 2017.

“We have a lot of depth in the pitching circle this year,” said White, who has five pitchers on staff. “Every pitcher will show a different look that we will be able to use to keep opposing hitters off balance.

“We also have great depth with our position players that we can use for different situations and to keep our team healthy and rested.”

Here’s a position-by-positon look at the 2017 Bronchos:Catcher

Despite losing a returning part-time starter to injury the Bronchos are still in good shape behind the plate. Leading the way is senior Tori Collet, a defensive whiz and team leader who batted .370 with seven home runs and 30 runs batted in last year. Returning to the position to help out is senior Ashleigh Tramel, who clubbed 16 homers two years ago in earning honorable mention All-America honors at catcher before moving to first base and designated player last season. Sophomore Halley Randolph, who hit .350 with six homers and 40 RBI as a rookie while seeing extensive starting time, had surgery in January and will miss the season.

First BaseAnother position where the Bronchos have both players back from last

year. Sophomore Carli Jones started most of the 2016 campaign and was the MIAA Freshman of the Year after hitting .386 with six homers and 36 RBI, finishing with a .522 on-base percentage that was second-best in the league. Senior Ashleigh Tramel also saw starting duty here and will again push for major playing time, though she could also see action at catcher and designated player.

Second BaseEasily the biggest question mark on the field as UCO has to replace a

four-year starter. Junior Shelby Carel is looking to take over the position after serving as a part-time starter in the outfield the past two years, while sophomore Mo Selman is also in the mix after moving over from pitcher. Freshman Kelsi Gori provides additional depth and senior Lexi Watson could also see time here if needed.

ShortstopThe Bronchos have no worry here with the return of junior star Morgan

Heard, who has been the team’s top shortstop since stepping foot on campus.

The multi-talented Heard was the MIAA and Central Region Player of the Year in 2016 while also garnering second-team All-America accolades after batting .463 with a school-record 23 doubles, eight homers and 50 RBI. She’s one of the best in the country and will again vie for a variety of postseason honors.

Third BaseSenior Lexi Watson is one of the top power-hitters in Division II and is

set to take over at the hot corner after playing several positions a year ago. Watson was a first-team All-MIAA and second-team All-Central Region pick as an outfielder after hitting .358 with 14 homers and a league-leading 60 RBI despite missing the final nine games to injury. Freshman Kelsi Gore is available to help.

OutfieldTwo starters are back, one after missing last year to injury, and the third

position is up for grabs. Sophomore JoBi Heath returns in left field after batting .333 with 14 homers, 13 doubles and 50 RBI in picking up second- team All-MIAA recognition in 2016, while senior Brooke Zukerman will resume her spot in right after injury forced her to miss last season. The versatile Zukerman is a two-time second-team All-MIAA honoree who has 28 homers, 122 RBI and 55 stolen bases for her career. Set to battle it out in center field is junior Carrie Abrams and sophomore Lauren Kelley, who both saw limited playing time last season. Adding depth to the outfield are speedy freshmen Natalie Seevers and Kaitlynn Monckton.

PitcherUCO has plenty of options for the pitching circle, with a pair of new-

comers looking to lead the way. Jayden Chestnut went 9-1 and threw two shutouts in helping Oklahoma to the Division I national title last year before transferring and the hard-throwing sophomore should be the ace of the staff with the ability to become a dominant force. Junior Peyton Walker sat out last season after spending two years in a relief role at Oklahoma State and will be used in a variety of ways this spring. Senior Jessi Walker went 16-10 last year while striking out 141 batters in a team-high 172 1/3 innings and should see action as a starter and reliever. Sophomore Abbie Lancaster, who had a 6-2 record and 2.52 earned run average in 2016, will probably be used mainly in middle relief and talented freshman Lauren Gibson is also available.

Designated PlayerThere are a number of candidates for this position, depending on who

has the hot bat and what happens at some of the positions where multiple players are vying for time. Six players saw time here last season and it will probably be more of the same in 2017.

Morgan Heard earned All-American honors as a sophomore in 2016.

The 2016 Central Oklahoma softball season ended earlier than the Bronchos hoped, but plenty of positives were drawn for a team that won 40 games for the fifth consecutive season

and once again, made a national tournament appearance.UCO no doubt has established itself as a perennial power in

Division II. The team that won the 2013 national championship had a handful of players still at Central in 2016, and that group, along with some new outstanding talent, proved the Bronchos are going to be successful for years to come.

UCO got the season started with two wins at East Central. The Bronchos returned to the southeastern part of the state and won four of five in the Southeastern Oklahoma Classic in Durant.

UCO won two more regular season games before winning three of five in the Rattler Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. And the Bronchos began the month of March with an 11-3 record.

Central would go 13-7 in the month of March, including winning nine of its first 12 in MIAA play.

UCO went 12-6 in the first three weeks of April in earning the third-seed in the MIAA postseason tournament, hosted by the Bronchos at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

The Bronchos beat Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri State in the MIAA tournament before falling to Missouri Western in the winners bracket final. UCO dispatched Pittsburg State over in the consolation final to get another shot at Missouri Western in the championship series. Unfortunately for the Bronchos, Missouri Western edged out the win and the conference crown.

UCO still earned a national tournament berth though, and travelled to Magnolia, Ark. for the Central Regional. There, the Bronchos fell short in the opener to Southern Arkansas. UCO beat Minnesota-Duluth to earn another shot at Missouri Western. However, once again, Missouri Western proved too much for the Bronchos, and UCO’s season came to an end with a final record of 40-20.

The Bronchos have won 46, 51, 41, 41, and 40 games in each of the last five seasons. Head coach Cody White has been a part of each of those, and has been the head coach for the past three seasons. He has plenty to look forward to after this past season.

Morgan Heard earned All-American honors after the sophomore shortstop dominated both in the field and at the plate. Heard hit .463, notched 23 doubles, eight home runs and 50 RBIs as she earned not only MIAA Player of the Year honors, but also Central Region Player of the Year honors before ultimately being named second-team All-American.

Heard was joined on the All-MIAA first team by catcher Tori Collet and outfielder Lexi Watson. Carli Jones and JoBi Heath made second-team All-MIAA along with Rachel Harper and Ally Dziadula. Jones earned MIAA Freshman of the Year honors as well.

Dziadula wrapped up an historic career with the Bronchos, finishing as the school’s all-time leader in at bats, with 814, and triples, with 17. Dziadula’s 279 career hits is second most in school history too. She also joined Alli Blake as the only players in UCO history to earn all-conference honors four times.

Central Oklahoma is in its fifth year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Associ-ation.

The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Di-vision II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Mis-souri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Associa-tion.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain member-ship in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Cen-tral Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional

Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), North-west Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and South-west Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missou-ri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began com-petition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Mis-souri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its mem-bership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebraska-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and North-eastern State all become league members with the start of the 2012-13 academic year.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which leaves the confer-ence with 14 schools. Lincoln and SBU are associate members who compete in women’s basketball.
