HOW DOES ELECTRONIC PERFORMANCE SUPPORT DIFFER FROM OTHER LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES?

EpilogueSystems Driving effective user adoption of your key applications often falls

short of targeted objectives. With the variety of tools and approaches

available to help, how do you choose the right too for the right

purpose?

It is common to confuse EPS with other technologies such as Learning Management Systems (LMS), Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS), course authoring tools, eLearning tools, user assistance tools, screen capture tools, simulation tools, and so on. The major difference is the delivery of necessary knowledge at the moment of need.

Achieving Effective User Adoption Requires a Blended Approach.

The graphic below portrays a series of learning technologies categories and a sample of specific tools used to facilitate effective user adoption of critical software systems. The use of multiple tools has been increasingly used in a blended approach to achieve the necessary levels of documentation needed for support, training, end user proficiency and application management.

Most content creation tools (simulation, screen capture, user assistance) are limited output products. This content is typically housed in a document management system (Sharepoint, Documentum, Filenet, etc.) or knowledge or support portals. This approach requires end users to self-navigate to and through these portals to find the content they need – utilization statistics on portals are poor and degrade over time.

eLearning tools and simulation tools (the line between the two is blurring) create important curriculum typically housed via LMS or LCMS systems. As such, they are not easily available to users and fall prey to the usual learning retention degradation. Additionally, the difficulty of creating eLearning, even with tools such as those referenced in the graphic above, limits their utility to a subset of processes and transactions. Simply put, you cannot scale these tools to the level of application coverage needed by users nor can users access these when their need is real and immediate.

Electronic Performance Support – the most fundamental layer.

However, a fundamental layer of software knowledge has been overlooked. What’s been missing is the ability to capture, develop and deliver the most fundamental layer of knowledge about how complex software applications work. The transactional and process layer of complex systems has been difficult to address.
