OUTLINE

• Advantages & Disadvantages

• Typical Construction Sequence

• Potential Transportation Applications

• Feasible Ground Conditions

• Basic Design Theory and Philosophy

• Overview of Recent ALDOT Projects

Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages

Top Down Construction Saves ROW Minimizes Footprint Permanently

Stabilized Rapid Construction

Time

Disadvantages

$$ Cost * Experience

Transportation Applications

• Excavation shoring (building construction)

• Roadway widening/additional lanes• Limited or expensive Right-of-Way• Minimize environmental impacts within the transportation corridor

• Landslide Repair

Feasible Ground Conditions

• Applicable over a wide range of soil types and ground conditions

• Need stable excavation face for 1-2 days

• Sands, clays, & mixed soils with marginal strength and some apparent cohesion (N > 9, c > 100psf)

• Not feasible in dry, clean, sands or where seepage may be a problem
