International Conference on Bio-Approaches for Environment and SustainabilityInternational Conference on Bio-Approaches for Environment and Sustainability (ICBES) was held on February 22-23 2017 at Institute of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (IESE) School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (SCEE) National University of Science and Technology (NUST)
Islamabad Pakistan and was attended by more than 100 national and international participants Conference themes included biotic and abiotic techniques for remediation In keynote address Dr Abdul Rashid Fellow Pakistan Academy of Sciences and IFA Norman Borlaug Laureate stressed on the continuous research in specific fields till tangible achievements Environmental and soil degradation issues (nutrient depletion air water and soil pollution) and their mitigations accordingly were highlighted in the Congress
Prof Dr Amir Muhammad Khan Rector FAST and Founder Chairman PARC Syed Abu Muhammad Akif Secretary Ministry of Climate Change graced the concluding session Prof Khan appreciated the efforts of NUST for organizing this need base event while Secretary MoCC emphasized on mutual collaboration between academia research and government agencies to ensure environmentally safe future for next generations
National Policy Dialogue on Salt-Affected SoilsBeneficial utilization of the salt-prone soils with innovative and viable practices was highlighted in one day National Policy Dialogue on Salt-affected Soils organized by Food and Agriculture Organization in Islamabad on March 7 2017 The workshop was a part of USDA funded project ldquoSoil Fertility Management for Sustainable Intensification in Pakistan Baseline Input Atlas and Promotion of Soil Fertility with Private
Sectorrdquo in Punjab and Sindh provinces being executed jointly by FAO MNFSampR and PARC Representatives from national (agricultural research and extension departments educational institutes fertilizer companies) and international (USDA IPI ILRI CIMMYT and ICARDA) organizations attended the dialogue Mr Francisco Gamarro Deputy FAO Representative

SalinitySodicity experts stressed on important aspects such as extent assessment methodologies reclamation economics fertilizer management of salt-affected soils The dialogue also highlighted that over 7 million hectares is salt affected in canal command area because of intensive use of poor quality ground water It was also stressed that under the changing climate and dwindling water resources both degraded and good agricultural soils must be taken care for sustainable crop production

Dr Liao from Beijing Engineering Research Centre for hybrid wheat China and national experts presented their latest findings and innovations on wheat hybrid development technology At this occasion an MoU was also signed for establishment of sub center of Beijing Research Centre for Hybrid wheat at The University of Agriculture Peshawar
