This technical memorandum (TM) presents the results of the soil vapor extraction (SVE)pilot test that was performed at the Fruit Avenue Plume (FAP) Superfund Site on May 9-11,2002.
Goals and ObjectivesThe primary goal of the SVE pilot study was to obtain sufficient information to permitdesign of a full-scale SVE system that can be used, if necessary, to remediate volatile organiccompound (VOC) contamination present in the vadose zone at the FAP site. In support ofthis goal, the following specific objectives were established for the SVE pilot test:
1. Monitor VOC concentrations in existing monitoring well headspace and in the SVEsystem offgas, and collect SVE system offgas samples to be analyzed in the laboratory toestimate the mass removal rate of an SVE well.
2. Obtain vacuum and airflow rate data at a pilot test well, and gather vacuum, oxygen, and VOC data at several existing surrounding monitoring points to determine site-specific air permeability information, which can be used to determine the radius ofinfluence for full-scale SVE wells.
3. Obtain design data needed to size the SVE blower and efficiently design and configureSVE wells for the full-scale system.
4. Measure SVE system offgas VOC concentrations for full-scale design air permittingpurposes.
Each of these objectives was accomplished and is discussed below.
SVE Pilot Test ProceduresTwo SVE pilot tests were conducted at two existing monitoring wells using a 15-horsepowerregenerative blower (Rotron Model EN12). During the tests, the inlet to the blower wasconnected to the well being tested (either DM-1 or SFMW-2) at ground surface to pull soil

gas from the screen interval that was exposed in the vadose zone. The soil gas that wasrecovered was processed through the blower and treated from the blower discharge usingtwo vapor-phase granular activated carbon (GAC) drums in series. An airflow meter andpressure gauge were fitted to the SVE blower inlet. A general schematic of the pilot SVEsystem is presented in Figure 1. A site plan is presented as Figure 2; this site plan shows thelocations of the monitoring wells that were used for the tests.
Monitoring Well DataThe day before pilot testing began, baseline monitoring was performed on existingmonitoring well SFMW-2 to obtain information on the natural diurnal fluctuation of soil gaspressure over time. The soil gas pressure in the headspace of the monitoring well wasmeasured by attaching an airtight fitting with a Magnehelic pressure gauge to the top of thewell casing. From approximately 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., the pressure in the subsurface atmonitoring well SFMW-2 ranged from 0 to +0.09 inches of water. In addition, the naturaldiurnal fluctuation of soil gas pressure was monitored during the SVE pilot tests at a remotewell, SFMW-15. The soil gas pressure was observed to range between -0.03 to +0.08 inchesof water. By conducting baseline monitoring, a range of naturally occurring subsurfacepressure fluctuation was established, thereby ensuring that the effects of the SVE blowercould be isolated and appropriately and accurately assessed.
The purpose of the first test was to obtain design data including contaminant informationfrom DM-1. This test was conducted using existing monitoring well DM-1 as the SVE testwell and existing monitoring wells DM-4, DM-5, SFMW-1, SFMW-2, and SFMW-5 asperimeter vapor monitoring points. The length of screen exposed in the vadose zone in DM-1 was 4.6 feet and ranged from 6.1 to 9.4 feet in the perimeter monitoring wells. This testwas conducted for 24 hours. The test began with baseline monitoring of pressure/vacuum,VOCs, and oxygen at each monitoring well in the test area (time zero measurements). Thepressure/vacuum was measured by attaching an airtight fitting with a Magnehelic pressuregauge to the top of the well casing. The VOC and oxygen content were measured bypumping air through the same airtight fitting. Three well casing volumes of air were purgedand then a Tedlar bag sample was collected. The VOC concentration in parts per million byvolume (ppmv) in the Tedlar bag was measured using a flame ionization detector (FID) andphotoionization detector (PID). The oxygen content was measured using a GasTech GTmeter. The SVE blower was then started at an airflow extraction rate of approximately 86standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) and a vacuum of 67 inches of water. However, after ashort period of time, water was observed to be surging into the SVE blower influent line, indicating that the permeability of the soils across the portion of the well screen above thewater table is low. Consequently, the influent air dilution valve was then slightly opened toreduce the vacuum and alleviate the water extraction. The airflow rate was adjusted toapproximately 55 scfm and the vacuum to 50 inches of water for the remainder of the test.
The original purpose of the second test was to extract soil gas from existing monitoring wellDM-5. However, upon startup of the SVE blower, no airflow could be obtained at themaximum operating capacity of the blower (90 inches of water). As a result, existingmonitoring well SFMW-2 was used for the second SVE test well. Existing monitoring wellsDM-1, DM-4, DM-5, SFMW-1, and SFMW-5 were used as vapor monitoring points. Thelength of screen exposed in the vadose zone in SFMW-2 was 7.3 feet and ranged from 4.6 to9.4 feet in the perimeter monitoring wells. This test was performed for approximately 14.5

hours, the amount of time needed for parameter stabilization. The test began with baselinemonitoring of pressure/vacuum, VOCs, and oxygen at each monitoring well in the test area(time zero measurements). The measurements were taken using the same methodsdescribed above for the DM-1 SVE test. The SVE blower was then started at an airflowextraction rate of approximately 33 scfm and a vacuum of 60 inches of water. As wasobserved during the test at DM-1, water began to surge into the SVE blower influent line. The influent air dilution valve was then slightly opened to reduce the vacuum and alleviatethe water extraction. The airflow rate was adjusted to approximately 30 scfm and thevacuum to 50 inches of water for the remainder of the test.
The conditions of the SVE blower, the SVE blower offgas, and the effects of the SVE bloweron the subsurface were monitored during the tests. A copy of the field notes is included inAttachment A.
The airflow rate and vacuum of the SVE blower influent were recorded at intervals ofapproximately 0,1,2,4,8,16, and 24 hours. SVE blower offgas samples were collected inTedlar bags for laboratory analysis of VOCs using an FID and FID at intervals ofapproximately 0,1,2,4,8,16, and 24 hours. In addition, SVE blower offgas samples werecollected in Tedlar bags for laboratory analysis of VOCs and petroleum hydrocarbons in theG> to CM range at intervals of approximately 1,4, and 24 hours.
Perimeter Monitoring Well DataPerimeter monitoring well data were collected at intervals of approximately 0,1,2,4,8,16,and 24 hours. It should be noted that the last sampling event for SFMW-2 test was atapproximately 14 hours due to the shortened duration. Magnehelic gauges were firstconnected directly to the wellhead to measure the vacuum response at each perimetermonitoring well. Next, an air-sampling pump was used to purge the stagnant vapor fromthe perimeter monitoring wells and collect a representative gas sample in a Tedlar bag. Thegas samples were analyzed for VOCs using a FID and for oxygen using a portable oxygensensor. A PID was also used to analyze the samples for VOCs to confirm the readingsmeasured with the FID and obtain alternate readings on those samples that had low oxygenlevels. The PID proved a more reliable instrument due to the frequency of FID flame-out asa result of depleted oxygen in the soil gas samples.
SVE Pilot Test ResultsTable 1 summarizes the operating parameters measured during the SVE pilot testsperformed at DM-1 and SFMW-2. Detailed summary tables of the data are included asAttachment B.
As indicated in Table 1, the SVE pilot tests at DM-1 and SFMW-2 produced similar resultswith respect to blower vacuum requirements, time to reach steady-state, and estimatedradius of influence. However, despite a shorter length of screen exposed in the vadosezone, higher airflow rates and concentrations of VOCs were produced during the test atDM-1 which indicate the presence of higher permeability soil conditions in the area aroundthis well.

Figures 3 through 10 illustrate the response of pressure, oxygen concentration, and VOC (asmeasured by PID) concentrations in the perimeter monitoring wells and in the SVE bloweroffgas for each SVE test. The distances from each perimeter monitoring well to the SVE testwell are indicated in the legend on each figure. It should be noted that data from monitoringwell DM-5 were eliminated from consideration due to the potential for a clogged well screenand erroneous results.
Figures 3 and 4 show a rapid decrease in soil gas pressure in the monitoring wells located 30feet from the SVE test well. Vacuum response in the majority of the more distant monitoringpoints was not discernable over ambient diurnal fluctuation. To be conservative, it wasassumed that the soil gas pressure could vary by ± 0.1 inches of water due to naturalfluctuation alone. Therefore, the only additional monitoring point to show a vacuum lessthan -0.1 inches of water was SFMW-5, which was located more than 130 feet from the SVEtest wells. This response was observed consistently in both tests; potentially, it indicates aradius of influence more than 100 feet from the SVE test well.

SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION PILOT STUDY TEST RESULTS
The oxygen concentration data shown in Figures 5 and 6 show that the monitoring wellslocated more than 100 feet from the SVE test wells are located in areas of little/nocontamination and that the tests were not performed long enough to flush the monitoringpoints with fresh air. The baseline levels collected for the first test on DM-1 were generallyelevated in all monitoring wells except SFMW-2. These results indicate that all wells exceptSFMW-2 are located in areas with low oxygen demand and potentially little contaminationthat may drive reactions that would deplete the oxygen. Oxygen concentrations changed inall monitoring points during the test and indicate that some influence was exerted from theSVE blower. Figure 5 shows a consistent decrease in oxygen content in all monitoring pointsimmediately after startup of the SVE blower and a slowly increasing concentration as timepassed. The oxygen concentration did not return to baseline conditions after 24 hours oftesting. Figure 6 shows that the oxygen levels did not return to their pre-existing levelsbefore the test on DM-1. The oxygen levels fluctuated slightly immediately after startup ofthe second test, but then either stabilized or slightly declined.
Despite an initial spike in SFMW-5 and DM-4, VOC concentrations in all perimeter-monitoring points during the DM-1 test were very low, as Figure 7 illustrates. Assumingthat some limited airflow was achieved in these wells during the test, these low VOCconcentrations potentially indicate that these monitoring points were located beyond theareas of vadose zone contamination. Figure 8 shows that the only well that consistentlyrecorded elevated VOC concentrations was DM-1 during the SVE test at SFMW-2,indicating that monitoring well DM-1 may be the only well that was monitored that islocated within an area of vadose zone contamination.
Figures 9 and 10 show the SVE blower off gas VOC concentrations (as measured with a PID)during the pilot tests at DM-1 and SFMW-2 respectively. Figure 9 shows a decreasing VOCconcentration with time and indicates that the soil gas was becoming more dilute as the testran. This points to the possibility that the extent of vadose zone contamination may belocalized to the DM-1 area. Figure 10 shows an increasing VOC concentration at SFMW-2with time that did not reach a maximum during the 14-hour test. This indicates that the SVEblower was beginning to extract from the source of VOCs, but that it did not fully reach itspotential. This suggests that the source of the VOC contamination was located some relativedistance from SFMW-2 and potentially close to DM-1 (approximately 33 feet away).
Table 2, which appears at the end of this technical memorandum, summarizes theconcentrations of the chemicals detected in the samples that were analyzed by thelaboratory for VOC and TPH. Attachment C contains the analytical data from the laboratory.Table 2 also shows that more than 99 percent (by weight) of the VOCs removed by the SVEblower were petroleum-based compounds occurring in the Q to Cn range. The VOCconstituents detected at the highest concentrations were 1,2,4 trimethylbenzene and 1,3,5trimthylbenzene, followed by significantly lower concentrations of chlorinated and otherpetroleum-based hydrocarbons. Both 1,2,4 trimethylbenzene and 1,3,5 trimthylbenzene arepresent in most petroluem fuels or solvents such as Stoddard solvent. PCE was consistentlydetected at levels higher than the other chlorinated chemicals. TCE and cis-DCE were alsodetected, but at concentrations generally an order of magnitude below the PCEconcentrations.
The vapor-phase GAC was successful in removing more than 97 percent of the TPH (byweight) from the offgas prior to discharge to the atmosphere.

SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION PILOT STUDY TEST RESULTS
Pilot Test ConclusionsThe SVE pilot study at the FAP Superfund Site yields the following general conclusions, which were reached based on the measured field parameters and laboratory data analysis:
• The soil at the site is amenable to removal of contaminants through the use of SVE.
• There is limited contaminant mass present at the water table in the vicinity of DM-1.VOC concentrations in the headspace (i.e., 5 to 10 feet above the water table surface) ofthe other shallow monitoring wells was very low (generally less than 10 ppmv). Existingmonitoring well SFMW-2 is on the fringe of the source of contamination as indicated bymuch lower SVE blower offgas VOC concentrations and increasing VOC concentrationswith time. The offgas concentrations in DM-1 were decreasing with time, potentiallyindicating that the source is not extensive.
• The radius of influence observed using vacuum and oxygen response alone (100 ft+) wassignificant considering the abnormally short length of vent well screen that was used forextraction. This could indicate that the SVE test wells were screened within highlypermeable soil zones where air could preferentially travel significant lateral distances.
• The mass removal rate of 1.4 Ibs/day of total VOCs at the DM-1 site was relativelysignificant. However, the chlorinated fraction of the total mass removed representedless than 1 percent of the total mass suggesting that chlorinated hydrocarboncontamination in the area is very small as compared with the volume of petroleumhydrocarbon contamination.
• The chemicals detected in the offgas from the two SVE wells were consistent. Thisindicates that the vapors are likely from the same source located adjacent to existingmonitoring well DM-1.
• The offgas values are not high enough to indicate a high saturation of non-aqueousphase liquid (NAPL), but rather a low NAPL saturation that is consistent with theobserved low groundwater concentration. Some benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene(BTEX) is present, potentially indicating that the NAPL is not well weathered.
• The pore exchange rate observed during the test was less than 0.5 pore exchanges perday. This rate is significantly lower than typical design rates of 5 to 10 pore exchangesper day. In a full-scale SVE system, longer SVE well screens and higher airflow rateswould be used, which may result in higher mass removal rates than were observed inthese pilot tests.
• The soil remediation timeframe using full-scale SVE can be estimated by dividing thetotal mass of contamination in the vadose zone by the predicted full-scale mass removalrate. The total estimated mass of PCE within the vadose, or unsaturated soils, is 4.5 IbsPE&S, 2001). The actual mass removal rate of PCE during the pilot test wasapproximately 0.01 Ibs/day, based on the laboratory analysis of the samples taken at theconclusion of each test. Based on these estimates, the remediation time frame would beapproximately 450 days. A shorter time frame is likely if a full-scale remediation systemwere operated. However, the preliminary data show that the mass of contamination (toinclude petroleum hydrocarbons) within the vadose zone may be higher than previously

estimated. (The original estimate was based on chlorinated solvent soil contaminationgenerally occurring in the top 2iO feet of fiie soil horllori;; The contamination [includingboth chlorinated solvents and petroleum hydrocafbonsppmoved during the pilot testwas recovered from deeper intervals in the vadose zone;[35-40'].) Therefore, theestimated remediation timeframe is uncertain.
In summary, the SVE pilot test at the FAP Superfund Site ffidfcated that SVE is a viableoption for removing contamination that has been determined to be present at or near thewater table surface. However, more than 99 percent of the contamination recovered waspetroleum-based. For the purposes of remediation under Superfund, the detectedpetroleum contamination is not considered a contaminant of concern. It is unclear whetherSVE would be effective at addressing the source of chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminationencountered in intermediate zone ground water, particularly in light of the low detections(at or below the current preliminary remedial goal) of chlorinated hydrocarbons observed inshallow ground water.
