CAL DISCOVERIES LECTURER
Gibor BasriGibor Basri received his B.S. in Physics from Stanford University
(1973) and a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1979). An award of a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship then brought him to the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the faculty of the Berkeley Astronomy Department in 1982, and became a full professor in 1994. A thread that runs through all his areas of research is magnetic activity on the Sun and other stars. He was a discoverer of and early pioneer in the study of brown dwarfs, has studied star formation, and been active in the debate on “what is a planet?”. Professor Basri has extensively used telescopes at the Lick and Keck Observatories, along with space telescopes. He was a Co-Investigator on NASA’s Kepler mission, which has revolutionized our knowledge about exoplanets. In 2007 he also became the founding Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion at UC Berkeley, and in 2015 he received the Berkeley Citation (campus’ highest honor) upon retiring. In 2016 he received the Carl Sagan Award for Popularizing Science. He is still very active with students and research, currently utilizing Kepler photometry to understand starspots.
Cal lecturer's participation cannot be guaranteed and is contingent on a minimum number of paying travelers
DECEMBER 5 – DEPART U.S.Overnight flight to Buenos Aires.
DECEMBER 6 – BUENOS AIRESOn arrival in Buenos Aires, you will be met by our representatives and transferred to Hotel Intersur, located in the heart of Recoleta, the most classic district in Buenos Aires. Recoleta is known for its tree-lined plazas, shopping and dining, and distinct Beaux-Arts architecture. The remainder of your morning is at leisure to get a taste of the neighborhood, or simply rest at the hotel. In the afternoon, we'll gather for a program orientation, then set out to visit La Recoleta Cemetery. Perhaps the most famous cemetery in Buenos Aires, La Recoleta is the final resting place of Eva Perón and many other notable Argentineans. Its above-ground mausoleums and monuments are uniquely decorated in a

wide variety of styles, and, due to their sheer quantity, evoke the feeling of navigating an elaborate stone labyrinth as you pay respects to those buried there. Overnight at Hotel Intersur Recoleta. (D)
DECEMBER 7 – BUENOS AIRESToday we explore the city of Buenos Aires in a cross-section of its most famous neighborhoods. Settled in stages during the 16th century, Buenos Aires developed at this site due to its strategic location along the Río de la Plata as it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Consequently, trade has always played a pivotal role in the economy of Buenos Aires, and in turn the social and cultural identity of the city. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Buenos Aires saw an influx of immigrants, primarily from Europe, whose influences can still be seen today. Buenos Aires is often called the "Paris of South America" and has a European feel, with wide boulevards, large squares, and manicured public parks. This morning, we start our tour at the Plaza de Mayo, the

city's main square, to see the Cabildo, the former colonial town hall, and the Casa Rosada, the famed government palace. Both buildings also house a museum, so here we will have a chance to learn about Argentinian history before continuing to the National Congress Building and then to the colorful port neighborhood of La Boca. Recognizable by its "Caminito" street lined with brightly colored buildings, La Boca was originally populated by shipyard workers and is famous today for its soccer, art culture, and Italian heritage. Enjoy lunch in a typical barbecue restaurant at Puerto Madero, the revitalized dockside waterfront. In the evening, head toward San Telmo, one of Buenos Aires's oldest neighborhoods, to take in dinner and a tango show at La Ventana. Originating in impoverished areas in the 1880s, the tango rose from a mix of Cuban and Spanish rhythms, European polka, and African music. Tango songs originally told stories about the city and its people, often with poetic lyrics impossible to translate. In spite of its humble origins, the tango eventually rose to the salons of the upper classes in the 1920s. Overnight at Hotel Intersur Recoleta. (BLD)
DECEMBER 8 – BUENOS AIRESToday, set out into the Recoleta neighborhood surrounding our hotel. Marked by leafy plazas, public sculptures, cafés, and restaurants, Recoleta is one of Buenos Aires's best neighborhoods to explore. The name comes from the Order of Shoeless Recoleta monks, who established their monastery, church, and churchyard here in the beginning of the 18th century. Explore these sites that are still standing today, at the heart of the district. We'll also stop at the Palais de Glace, an art exhibition center that started as an ice skating rink, then became an aristocratic setting for the tango as the dance was moving upwards through the social classes. From here, we'll
pass through Recoleta's green spaces and head towards the Palermo neighborhood. Palermo is home to elegant mansions, cultural institutions like the National Library, and manicured gardens like the Rosedal, Japanese Garden, and Botanical Garden. There is also a planetarium here, where we will attend a lecture by an astronomer to learn more about the upcoming eclipse phenomenon. Overnight at Hotel Intersur Recoleta. (BD)
DECEMBER 9 – EL CALAFATEIn the early morning, transfer to Aeroparque Jorge Newbery for our flight to El Calafate. After arrival, explore the streets of El Calafate's old quarter to see typical constructions of the early pioneers in this 20th century outpost town. Visit the Caves of Gualicho, an archaeological site showcasing evidence of the earliest humans living in this area. Named for an indigenous deity, the caves feature recreations of prehistoric paintings and a museum of fossils, artifacts, and photographs. Tonight, enjoy a dinner featuring Patagonian lamb, a local specialty. Overnight at Quijote Hotel. (BD)
DECEMBER 10 – EL CALAFATEAfter an early breakfast, we leave for a full day excursion to Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park. Once inside the park, the scenery changes drastically, forested with trees unique to the Patagonian Andes. Although there are many glaciers within Los Glaciares, the most striking is Perito Moreno, which spans 121 square miles at about 240 feet above water level. From the viewing platforms, you’ll likely be able to see – and hear – chunks of ice cracking and breaking away from the glacier. In the afternoon, set sail on a “nautical safari” to witness this natural wonder up close. After returning to land, stop at the Glaciarium to learn more about the formation and evolution of glaciers, and the encroaching effects of climate change. Overnight at Quijote Hotel. (BL)
DECEMBER 11 – EL CALAFATEToday, visit Nimes Lagoon Bird Sanctuary to observe colorful flamingos and other water birds. As you head back to town, stop at the historical museum and interpretation center to learn more about the history of this region, from prehistoric times until today. Overnight at Quijote Hotel. (BL)
DECEMBER 12 – BARILOCHE This morning, transfer to the airport for our flight to San Carlos de Bariloche, one of Argentina's most picturesque cities, and
