SOLAR ENERGY

Renewable energy Sources account for only 1% of total energy used globally

Solar energy is the smallest renewable source used worldwide

The sun provides over 80 times more energy than the world requires daily

We need to take advantage!

SOLAR PANELS

Simply uses the suns energy to heat water in a dwelling Solar panels can save 60-70% of energy costs in a

general Irish dwelling.

TYPES OF PANELS

Flat Plate Collectors -copper piping system within a heat absorbing rectangular unit.

Quickest Return on Investment (Cheaper)

More visually appealing

There are two main types of solar panels used in Ireland;

Page 6: Solar panels (nr)

Capture more sunlight due to greater surface area

Better Performance in overcast conditions

Vacuum Tubes/Evacuated tube Collectors- A number of vacuum tubes containing a finned-metal collector tube.

Page 7: Solar panels (nr)

The Solar panel system can easily fit into the original service set up in place. i.e. It connects into existing water cistern

APPEARANCE

Solar panels can also be aesthetically pleasing

Installation on a pitched roof can appear almost like Velux windows

Can be integrated into a buildings facade installation

FUNDING

Initial costs are quite high €7000 for a 6m² flat plate collector

system Government grants = €250 per m²

€9000 for a 5 evacuated tube system Government Grants = €300 per m²

The Sun will never send us a bill

WHY CHOOSE SOLAR PANELS?

Environmentally Friendly Zero Co2 emissions

Cheaper in the long run Grants and return on investment

Minimal Maintenance required Practical replacement for non-renewable fossil

fuels Resources are running out

Suitable for Domestic buildings Other forms of renewable energy are not practical
