1. Introduction

Solar power plants: It has a centralized receiver which produces electrical power by converting the sun’s energy in to high temperature heat using various mirror (heliostats) configurations

Central receiver technology for generating electricity has been demonstrated in the solar one pilot power plant at Barstow, California

2. Central Receiver Technology

System Description

1.Heliostats

2.Receiver/Tower

3.Field Layout

2.1 Heliostats

The heliostat is composed of several mirror modules rather than having single large mirror

2.2 Receiver - Tower

The receiver, placed at the top of a tower, is located at a point where reflected energy from the heliostats can be intercepted more efficiently There are two basic types of receivers

1. External

2. Cavity

Receivers

External receiver Cavity receiver

2.3 Field Layout

Best position for locating heliostat relative to the receiver

How high to place the receiver above the field

Field layout depends on the following loss mechanisms

1. Cosine effect

2. Shadowing and blocking

Shadowing and BlockingShadowing occurs at low sun angles when heliostat casts its shadow on a heliostat located behind itBlocking can be observed in a heliostat field by noting reflected light on the backs of heliostats
