Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Excessive solar heat gain and solar glarecan be a costly and unwanted hindrancefor building owners. In addition, BuildingRegulations Approved Document L2 nowrequires designers to reduce heat gain, withsolar shading recommended as apreventative measure unless glass areasare minimised.

Colt solar shading systems offer designersthe opportunity for distinctive architecturalimpact, whilst reducing solar heat gains.

SOLAR RADIATION & LOUVRES

External solar shading is one of the mosteffective ways to control the internalconditions of a building.

Radiation from the sun is transmitted, absorbed and reflected by the louvres. As a result solar heat gain is preventedfrom passing into the building, minimisingventilation requirements and reducingcooling loads. If a controllable system isinstalled, adjustable louvres track theposition of the sun, thereby reducing thenumbers of days when the buildingoverheats. Equally, in winter the louvresmay be adjusted in such a way that thebuilding benefits from the heat from thesun, and they can be closed at nightreducing heat loss.

At the same time, daylight levels areenhanced, and at the same time levels ofglare are reduced.

COLT’S OFFER

Calculation of sun angles and heat loads.

Selection of the most appropriate system from a wide range of options.

Louvre panels are available in various configurations, materials, finishes and coatings to meet the requirements of almost any project.

Three advanced control options are available, ICS 4-Link for large or medium sized projects, Soltronic for smaller projects, and the innovative Girasol thermohydraulic system, which requires no external energy source.

All systems are durable and reliable with low maintenance needs.

COLT’S TRACK RECORD

Colt has more than 40 years experience in designing solar shading solutions.

With operating companies locatedworldwide, Colt has a broad productportfolio to meet your needs.

Colt was the first to incorporate electricitygenerating photovoltaic cells into solarshading louvres.

Colt understands that a low energybuilding fails on its weakest link, so it canprovide integrated solutions that covermany aspects of design includingdaylighting and natural ventilationsolutions.

Colt is dedicated to innovation and has a comprehensive design capability, including prototyping and testing facilities. We would welcome the opportunity todevelop solutions to match your uniquerequirements.

SOLAR SHADING SYSTEMS LEAFLET

This leaflet shows the different systemsColt can offer. Firstly, the five standardcarrier systems are outlined. Then thedifferent louvre types are shown.

Front Page: Berlaymont, Brussels

Over 22,000m2 of controllable Colt Shadoglass louvres were installed onto the European Commission Headquarters. These act as ahigh performance secondary facade. The control system was supplied by Colt and adjusts the position of the louvres in response tochanging climatic conditions and available daylight.

Notes: 1.When louvre angle > 90o - facade is in the shade. 2. Normally the angle of the louvre follows the VSA (vertical shadow angle). When shading is notrequired (i.e. when facade is in the shade or when the sky is overcast), the louvres may be set for maximum daylight entry or vision to the outside, or are closed fornight security and improved insulation.

TOTAL CONTROL

Although fixed solar shading performs well on a South facing facade, performance is dramatically reduced on a East or West facing facade whichreceives a large amount of sunshine during the day.

A controllable shading system can best overcome this problem. Suntracking louvres follow the path of the sun, making sure the solar shadingsystem always optimises the amountof daylight entry.

On dull or overcast days the louvres are controlled in such a way that ifclouds pass over the building, the louvres will automatically open tomaximise daylight entry and then later revert back to their originalposition.

The Sun path diagram (right) for latitude 52oN shows the position of the

sun throughout the day during the months of June, March/September andDecember.

Carrier systems 1, 2 ,3 and 5 are pivotedsystems which require the supports to beconnected to each side of the louvre.System 4 provides a back hung designsolution with hidden control mechanismsintegrated within the main verticalsupports. This allows for seamlesscontinuous louvres with unobtrusivesupports when viewed from the outside, due to the louvres being installed in frontof the supports.

For glass, carrier system 4 is suitable forsmaller spans of up to 1800mm in length. It can utilise cross sectional louvre widthsof up to 600mm, incorporatingphotovoltaic cells if required.

This carrier system is also suited for usewith metal, fabric, wood, terracotta clayand translucent acrylic louvres.

Colt Solar Shading systems may be controlled in three different ways:

Hand control via lever or crank handle. Electrically operated via actuators, which require a controller such as ICS 4-Link, SolTronic or a client BMS. Self powered via a thermal hydraulic controller Colt Girasol. This operates autonomously and requires no additional source of

power other than the sun.

GIRASOL

Girasol operates solar shading louvreswithout the need for electrical power or asophisticated control system.

Absorber tubes, enclosed by mirrors, force a hydraulic cylinder to open or closethe louvres according to the position ofthe sun.

SOLTRONIC

SolTronic is ideally suited for small tomedium sized projects.

It is a simplified version of ICS 4-Linkand can control up to ten actuators in anysingle zone.

It responds to external weather conditionsautomatically calculating the position ofthe sun, and adjusts the position of thelouvres accordingly.

ICS 4-LINK

ICS 4-Link is ideally suited to largerprojects with more complex controlrequirements.

It is a generic control system that canoperate HVAC, smoke control and solarshading systems.

It has a wide variety of operating modes, including sun tracking, daylightingoptimisation and PV illumination. Itresponds to timers and sensors to ensurethat the building ‘reacts’ appropriately tothe sun’s position and to the weather.

Remote operation is available via aninternal modem interface and a manualoverride is also possible.

Tubes are filled with a special hydraulic fluid and as the

sun moves over the building, there will be an imbalance of

heat between the two tubes and the louvres will open or

close as appropriate

COLT SERVICE

Part of the Colt Group of companies, ColtService offers a comprehensive range of maintenance packages incorporating the maintenance and repair of all building services equipment including non Colt products.

Colt Service provide a 24 hour, 365 day emergency cover as standard.

MAINTENANCE & TESTING

Colt solar shading systems requirevirtually no maintenance.

All components of any system should be serviced at least once a year and tested monthly.

COMMISSIONING

Proper commissioning by experts isessential. We recommend that ourspecialist staff commission and certify thesystem.
