For nearly a decade energy efficiency Installers have trusted SOLFEX energy systems to deliver there renewable energy products, solar thermal components and systems are no exception to

this. As part of the Travis Perkins PLC group of company’s we offer our customers a solid reliable distribution platform and solar thermal expertise from a dedicated sales division.

The company origins are founded on supplying the solar thermal sector with its own exclusively designed & European manufactured ‘own branded’ solar

thermal equipment.

SOLFEX energy systems can supply a vast range of solar thermal products and services for various applications from domestic

residential housing utilising our renowned Prestige Solar Thermal Packages, or we can offer a bespoke system

for commercial applications such as hotels, sports & leisure facilities or manufacturing.

Next Generation EnergySolar thermal energy is a cost effective, everlasting, and unlimited free energy resource that does not produce any harmful emissions or wastage, with global warming temperatures continuing to rise and traditional energy sources such as Gas and Oil increasing in cost year on year, solar thermal energy systems are becoming one of Europe’s fastest growing renewable technologies.

The concept is very simple, thermal energy produced from the solar thermal collectors is gathered and stored in a well-insulated tank; this thermal energy can be used for bathing, or in larger combined systems can also assist space heating requirements.

Environmentally Friendly & Financially RewardingAs well as reducing your carbon foot-print and adding value to your property, using solar thermal energy has outstanding financial rewards, Hot water heating generation costs are cut considerably, by up to 70% annually & in the sumer months as much as 100% of your total requirement. Backup space heating support in well insulated homes can also be partially covered, SOLFEX Energy Systems will be happy to provide information and calculations about the economic efficiency of your Solar Thermal System, including the UK government supported Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which will guarantee index linked payments for every Kwh (th) of renewable energy generated.

The TechnologyAll our Solar Thermal Collectors do not rely on direct sunlight or high ambient temperatures; they are designed to absorb diffuse light and will even produce useful amounts of heat energy on cloudy days, thus reducing the operating time of your conventional boiler and further use of expensive fossil fuels, using Solar Thermal Energy will also reduce expensive maintenance of your current boiler because its operational usage will be lower.

Solar Panel Mounting OrientationFor optimum performance solar panels should be positioned due South at 35°, however, it is impossible that all roof orientations will allow this, in general any position between South East & South West is suitable and will only reduce optimum by up to 5%. Solar Panels can also be mounted on the East & West elevation; this type of system will absorb energy both in the morning and in the afternoon as the axis of the sun or diffuse light moves from East to West.

Using high performance CPC vacuum tube collectors it is also possible to install this type of collector on the West facing orientation only, the CPC collector has highly reflective, weather proof CPC ( Compound Parabolic Concentrator) reflector behind each vacuum tube, the special improved geometry of the reflector ensures that direct and diffuse light falls on to the absorber even when the angle of incidence is not ideal.

Case StudiesDomestic Family Home

Solar objective:

Domestic hot water with underfloor space heating with surplus energy heating a swimming pool.

A home owner in Lincoln chose SOLFEX energy systems to design a bespoke solution which would maximize the real potential of solar thermal power, CPC INOX vacuum tube collectors were chosen due to the small roof area available and the client wanting to maximize harvesting of solar thermal energy.

The collector field delivers energy to a 1000 litre stratified buffer tank and domestic hot water is supplied using two fresh water stations which will deliver fresh hygienic legionella free hot water at a rate of 60 litres per minute & the heating circuits are fed through two heating circuit groups ( HKG ) which is weather compensated. Surplus energy is diverted to a plate heat exchanger fitted on the swimming pool circuit and the system is controlled and monitored by a Primos 600 solar thermal controller.

Case StudiesLuxury High Rise Apartments

Solar objective:

Located in one of the most sought after locations on the north bank of the River Thames, adjacent to Chelsea Harbour, Imperial Wharf is London’s premier riverside address. The solar thermal installation was installed in the new office complex for the main developer, St George, and supplies their hot water for showering/washing facilities; the developer is committed to the creation of sustainable energy efficient communities & building practices.

The installation itself was a challenge due to an 85 meter pipe run in between the collector field and storage vessel so an increased collector area was added to overcome the heat loss within the pipe work and the correct high efficiency pump was selected within the pump group to overcome increased pressure loss across the pipe work system. Due to the height of the building increased ballast was also used to prevent against wind loads. The installation was completed within two days by the Professional Evo-Energy Team who are part of the SOLFEX energy systems Installer Partner Program.

Case StudiesRyedale Public Swimming Pool

Solar objective:

Rising energy costs and the newly introduced, government backed Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments were the key drivers for Ryedale District Council when they recently undertook a planned boiler replacement and decided to utilise the power of solar energy to heat Ryedale Pool in Pickering as part of the package of measures.

SOLFEX energy systems was contacted by Ecoliving with a brief and in conjunction with Preston Lee Chambers building services consultancy plans were put in place to design and cost the large scale solar thermal system.

Flat plate collectors were chosen due to the collector field orientation being due South with no shading and the excellent price performance ratio.

The installation consists of 2 rows of 21 flat plate solar thermal panels, connected in series seven at a time on the facility’s flat roof. It is integrated with 2 gas boilers and a CHP (combined heat & power) unit controlled by a BMS system.

Duplex Stainless SteelUsing the latest high specification Duplex stainless steel to resist all forms of corrosion including crevice and stress whilst its high mechanical strength gives it durability. The very latest automated welding procedures along with full post weld treatments guarantee welds that are as strong as the metal.

All cylinders are factory pressure tested to a full 12 bar which is four times the normal working pressure.

Corrugated Stainless Steel CoilWe use a high heat transfer corrugated tube heat exchanger to give a 20% faster recovery than plain tube heat exchangers, it is also lighter & stronger than plain tube making the storage cylinder the lightest and easiest to handle on site.

Maximum CapacityAn inbuilt diffuser reduces turbulence when cold water enters the storage by baffling the flow, the end result is that the hot water output is equal to the capacity, a 180 litre cylinder will produce 180 litres of hot water!

Heat LossAll our cylinders are manufactured using the latest HCFC free Enviro-foam insulation, tests show that 50mm of Enviro-foam injected into the case and covering both domes achieves astonishingly low levels of heat loss which ensures it fully complies with the 2010 Part L requirements for both new build and replacement cylinders.

Quality Standard All our unvented stainless cylinders are manufactured in accordance with BS EN 12897 the specification for unvented water storage vessels. The cylinders have been tested by Kiwa which is a member of the European Organisation for Technical Approvals and comply with current UK Building Regulations G3 and Water Regulations, in performance it complies with the requirements of BS 6700 and meets the NHBC criteria for domestic properties.

Unvented Cylinders Our cylinders are specifically designed for solar applications in mind, therefore providing an efficient way of providing domestic hot water. Each model features a dedicated high performance solar coil, transferring the maximum amount of heat from the solar circuit to the stored water.

Our cylinders are compatible with all our Prestige Solar Thermal packs and have been designed to maximise the dedicated solar volume.

The direct models are electrically heated cylinders, using the 3kW immersion heater supplied with the unit, with a high performance solar coil. They are capable of meeting the requirements of Building regulations, provided that it is matched to the panels and the hot water requirement correctly. The indirect cylinders are heated by a conventional boiler (either gas or oil) through a second high performance coil.

Commercial Solar Thermal Components

Stratified Layering Module SLM 120/200Solar Thermal Energy from large scale collector fields of up to 200M² is transferred through highly efficient plate heat exchangers to the primary water within the buffer storage tank. Depending on the temperature of the water an intelligent control system will deliver this energy into the relevant zone within the buffer storage tank automatically to ensure fast heat up times and maximum efficiency.

Fresh Water Station FWM 150/225 SOLFEX energy systems large scale fresh water stations guarantees fresh & hygienic legionella free domestic hot water on demand, primary energy from the buffer storage tank is automatically transferred to the highly efficient plate heat exchangers when there is a demand for domestic hot water or when the secondary circulation is in operation, this results in instant & fresh legionella free domestic hot water flow rates of up to 225 litres per minute. The primary return water is then layered to the relevant zone within the buffer storage tank dependent upon the temperature to maximise efficiency of the system.

Vacuum Tube Collectors CPC INOX

SOLFEX energy systems vacuum tube collectors are mass-produced products manufactured by our OEM partner and European market leader for vacuum tube collectors Ritter Solar GmbH in Baden-Württemberg-Germany. Their outstanding design, professional processing, top quality and high energy yield, as well as their excellent price/performance ratio make them stand out. High-quality, corrosion-resistant and tested materials ensure smooth operation over a long useful life. The well-known indestructibility of the borosilicate glass tubes was confirmed by positive test results in the hailstone test according to DIN EN 12975-2 and the thermal shock test.

38

The CPC INOX evacuated tube collectors were developed especially for solar water heating and for solar backup heating. The low pressure loss allows several modules to be connected in series. The aperture area measurements of 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 m2 allow accurate adjustment to water and/or space heating requirements. We also paid careful attention to details which are important for mounting the system: the solar system is delivered with a tentered sun protection sheet to allow commissioning the system even during maximum solar irradiation. Hand straps which can be attached to the collector frame ensure safe and easy transport onto and across the roof and can be used as transport straps for quick mounting.

To increase the efficiency of evacuated tube collectors, a highly reflective, weather-proof CPC reflector (Compound Parabolic Concentrator) is fitted behind the evacuated tubes. The special, improved geometry of the reflector ensures that direct and diffuse sunlight

falls onto the absorber even when the angle of incidence is not ideal. This considerably improves the energy yield.

The evacuated tube is a product with improved geometry and performance. The evacuated tubes consist of two concentric glass tubes which are sealed in a semi-circular shape on one side and are joined to one another on the other side. The space between the tubes is evacuated and then hermetically sealed (evacuated insulation).

To use solar energy, the internal glass tube is coated with an environmentally friendly, highly selective layer on the outside, thus turning it into an absorber. The coating is protected in the evacuated space. The aluminium nitrite sputter coating used is characterised by extremely low emissions and excellent absorption.

Solar Keymark No. 011-7S495R

In the development of the collectors, our OEM partner Ritter Solar GmbH used their many years of experience with CPC in combination with the latest

findings from production technology.

Sharp reflector edges are framed in the aluminium frame profile. The edges of the collector frame are sealed with rubber profiles.

Only few screws are used in those places which need to be unfastened for maintenance; rivets are not used.

For CPC INOX, the flow and return pipes may be fitted on the left or the right of the manifold. Depending on the location of the flow pipe, the sensor is placed on the right or the left.

The pipes are mass produced with just a minimum number of soldering points.

This results in high leakage safety and a reduction of internal scaling. The

internal pipe register is also constructed from stainless steel, which prevents any

associated corrosion issues from faulty transfer mediums and two dissimilar

metals fused together.

The reflector is produced from a weather proof metal sheet with protective coating using accurate roll forming technology.

The special fastening technique allows the reflector to be exchanged without using tools.

The heat transfer plates are made of aluminium so that even high stagnation temperatures have no effect on the metal’s characteristics. The heat transfer

plate is folded into both pipes.

The tube retainer can be mounted and demounted from the foot rail without using tools. All sharp edges are sealed with rubber profiles.
