irish book day17th march 2011 (that’s st. patrick’s day!) metro & subway stops in dc & nyc

we’ve been doing it for five years now and by now most of you know the drill: on st. patrick’s day we send our volunteers throughout the city to give away an awe-inspiring 10,000 books by fab irish writers for free. in year six we aim to double that figure for dc and will also partner with the irish arts center so that irish book day can go to nyc for the first time in 2011. impressed? you should be.

our third participant in the solas salon is the dynamic, musically ambitious and eccentric, duke special , who hails from belfast with a sound that is self-confessed ‘hobo-chic.’ blissfully at home in his own alluring genre of bruised romanticism, his is a world of vaudeville and addictive melodies.

8th -25th september, 2010the flea theatre, 41 white st, new york

liam and zoe are madly in love. well, one of them is. the other is up to all kinds of messing. when sometime-clairvoyant zoe is abroad, an eerily similar lady is seen zooming around dublin on the back of a motorcycle making illicit cash withdrawals. discovering the deception, liam’s twin brother larry plans an unusual revenge. but zoe has one more trick up her sleeve…

co-produced with georganne aldrich heller and made possible in part through the generosity of the weissberg foundation.

presented as part of the 3rd annual festival of irish theatre, 1st irish theatre 2010

30th september - 23rd october, 2010

solas nua’s first musical transports you to dublin 1941 and to an underground nightclub where spies and revolutionaries abound. are the irish making a weather controlling device? or worse, an atom bomb? with music that crosses marlene dietrich and gilbert & sullivan with the chieftans, and a brilliantly silly plot based on actual events, improbable frequency is the most fun you’ll have at the theatre this season.

19th may - 5th june, 2011the uline building, 3rd & m streets ne

dc is a city dedicated to remembrance, its monuments and museums paying tribute to the memory of heroes and great historic deeds. but right at the heart of the city, an entire neighbourhood has been erased from the collective memory - the infamous swampoodle. we will perform on the geographical trace of this notorious 19th century irish shanty town, interweaving its historical absence through the often invisible african-american community that currently resides there. swampoodle will create a phantasmic archaeological journey through a notorious forgotten place, an urban ghost story still in the making.

karl burke residency - 2th-28th november, 2010

exhibition at the fridge, 516 8th street se 18th november - 11th december 2010

karl burke’s work translates to public interventions of wooden draw-ings which involve the placement of uniform lengths of processed wood in various situations in a forested environment, specifically in relation to different aspects of that landscape. these sculptures are not fixed with nails or any other form of fixing and this allows for a fluid response. as a site specific work, these pieces act as a three dimensional notebook in the form of documentation through photog-raphy. through these subtle but logical interventions in nature, karl’s work offers the viewer the opportunity to - in a beautifully simple way - reassess and acknowledge the world that surrounds us.

suzannah vaughan7th january - 12th february, 2011flashpoint gallery, 916 g street nw

primarily working with the mediums of sculpture and installation, suzannah vaughan’s practice is influenced by constructed spaces, light, and architecture. she is interested in the point where imagined spaces come into existence, creating endless possibilities within that moment. she explores the potential of these transient spaces, where utopian structures can exist outside the politics of reality. her work can exist as stand alone pieces or as alternative structures within an existing space. simple minimalist forms generate a phenomenological experience for the viewer and offer an alternative to the distractions of modern life, so creating a moment to contemplate possibility.
