THE CRISIS More than 5.5 million of the 21.9million veterans in the US are copingwith a service-related disability. Dueto the improvements in battlefieldmedical treatment, they return alive, yet not whole. Service members aretrained to depend on each other.Upon separation from the military, many veterans feel disconnected andalone, experiencing a significant andimmediate loss in the lack ofcamaraderie and interdependence asthey return to the civilian world andtheir communities.

WHO WE ARESoldiers to Summits is a program of NoBarriers USA, a nonprofit organization. efirst S2S expedition took place in 2010, whenErik Weihenmayer, the only blind person toclimb each continent’s highest mountain, andhis Everest team led a group of disabledsoldiers to the summit of Lobuche, a 20,100-foot peak in the Himalayas. Team members’disabilities ranged from amputations andblindness to traumatic brain injuries andpost-traumatic stress. e S2S Lobucheexpedition was a tremendous success, withseven out of 10 soldiers reaching the summit.A year later, the entire team continues towork together to inspire others—soldiers andcivilians alike.
