Today’s Gospel: Jn 18:33b�37��

� Pilate said to Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus

answered, "Do you say this on your own or have others told you

about me?" Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own

nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have

you done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to

this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attend-

ants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the

Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here." So Pilate said to

him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a

king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to

testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to

my voice."�

Reflection: King of Justice, Love and Peace�

Paul speaks of Jesus Christ at the end of time�handing over

the kingdom�to God the Father. Today’s Preface repeats this, de-

scribing Christ’s kingdom as one of truth and life, of holiness and

grace, of justice. love and peace. This ideal is not to be merely a

future hope but is to be worked for in the present. The kingdom is

our hope, but somehow it is also in our midst, in the process of

becoming. The gospel tells us how we are to promote the fuller

coming of God’s kingdom among us. It comes whenever justice

is done for the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, and the oppressed.

To behave in this way is to imitate the Shepherd�King himself

who is presented in our Gospels as one who rescues from situa-

tions of alienation, who feeds, gives rest, heals and makes strong.

Among his final words was a promise to the thief being crucified

at his side, that he would be enfolded by the eternal love of God,

in paradise.�

The best way to honour Christ our King is to work to make

his kingdom a reality among us. Anything we do for the relief of

the deprived and underprivileged is also a service to Christ, be-

cause he identifies himself personally with people in need. The

disciple of Christ the King cannot afford the luxury of comforta-

bly keeping myself to myself or “Well I do harm to anyone.” To

be deaf to the cries of the neighbour in need is to close our ears to

Christ. To be blind to the anguish of the dying is to shut our eyes

to him. If we follow Jesus Christ as our Shepherd�king we must

in some way be shepherds ourselves, for his sake.�

El Evangelio: Jn 18, 33�37�

� En aquel tiempo, preguntó Pilato a Jesús: “¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?” Jesús le

contestó: “¿Eso lo preguntas por tu cuenta o te lo han dicho otros?” Pilato le respondió:

“¿Acaso soy yo judío? Tu pueblo y los sumos sacerdotes te han entregado a mí. ¿Qué es lo

que has hecho?” Jesús le contestó: “Mi Reino no es de este mundo. � Si mi Reino fuera

de este mundo, mis servidores habrían luchado para que no cayera yo en manos de los

judíos. Pero mi Reino no es de aquí”. Pilato le dijo: “¿Conque tú eres rey?” Jesús le contes-

tó: “Tú lo has dicho. Soy rey. Yo nací y vine al mundo para ser testigo de la verdad. Todo el

que es de la verdad, escucha mi voz”.�

Reflexión: Rey de Justicia, Amor y Paz�

Pablo habla de Jesucristo al final de los tiempos entregando el reino a Dios el Padre.

El Prefacio de hoy repite esto, describiendo el reino de Cristo como uno de verdad y vida,

de santidad y gracia, de justicia. amor y paz. Este ideal no debe ser simplemente una

esperanza futura, sino que debe trabajarse en el presente. El reino es nuestra esperanza,

pero de alguna manera también está entre nosotros, en proceso de convertirse. El evangelio

nos dice cómo debemos promover la venida más plena del reino de Dios entre nosotros.

Viene siempre que se hace justicia al hambriento, al sediento, al desnudo y al oprimido.

Actuar de esta manera es imitar al mismo Rey Pastor que se presenta en nuestros Evange-

lios como alguien que rescata de situaciones de alienación, que alimenta, da descanso, sana

y fortalece. Entre sus últimas palabras estaba una promesa al ladrón que estaba siendo cru-

cificado a su lado, que sería envuelto por el amor eterno de Dios, en el paraíso.�

La mejor manera de honrar a Cristo nuestro Rey es trabajar para hacer de su reino

una realidad entre nosotros. Todo lo que hacemos por el alivio de los desfavorecidos y

desfavorecidos es también un servicio a Cristo, porque él se identifica personalmente con

las personas necesitadas. El discípulo de Cristo Rey no puede permitirse el lujo de mante-

nerme a mí mismo cómodamente para mí mismo o "Bueno, le hago daño a nadie". Ser

sordo al llanto del prójimo necesitado es cerrar nuestros oídos a Cristo. Ser ciego a la

angustia del moribundo es cerrarle los ojos. Si seguimos a Jesucristo como nuestro Rey

Pastor, de alguna manera debemos ser pastores nosotros mismos, por su bien.�
