John was born of a woman too old for childbirth; Christ was born of a youthful virgin. The news of John’s birth was met with incredulity, and his father was struck dumb. Christ’s birth was believed, and he was conceived through faith.
John, then, appears as the boundary between the two testaments, the old and the new. As a representative of the past, he is born of aged parents; as a herald of the new era, he is declared to be a prophet while still in his mother’s womb.
Zechariah is silent and loses his voice until John, the precursor of the Lord, is born and restores his voice. The silence of Zechariah is nothing but the age of prophecy lying hidden, obscured, as it were, and concealed before the preaching of Christ. John was a voice that lasted for a time; Christ the Word in the beginning, is eternal.

We, the Congregation of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of Lafayette, acknowledge Jesus as Lord and find in His person and mission our truest identity. Obedient to the promptings of the Spirit, we acknowledge His life and ministry; His dying and rising as profound expressions of the Father’s constant love for all people. We faithfully join Him as ministers in His kingdom. Our mission involves the total restoration of humanity and the salvation of the whole person. Our response to this mission finds expression in programs that promote healing and unity in every aspect of the human person. Like Jesus, we seek to express solidarity with the poor and the oppressed, striving all the while to remove from ourselves and Church structures whatever promotes inequality, injustice and oppression.

Centennial News - Sunday, June 17, 2018
St. Peter Dedication - On June 29, 1953, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, the newly constructed church of St. Peter in New Iberia was consecrated by Bishop Jules Jeanmard. The church was the vision of their new pastor, Fr. Albert Bacque. After over a decade of fundraising, the parishioners of St. Peter raised approximately half a million dollars and the construction of the new church began in 1951. Two years later, the massive structure was completed with seating for 1,200 parishioners. Two 90-foot tall towers, decorated with large white rosaries, mark the prominence of the Church dedicated to the “Prince of the Apostles.”
National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministries – in this Centennial Year, the Diocese of Lafayette is happy to host a national Marriage and Family Conference – July 15-17 at the Cajundome Convention Center.
