 Solent Local Enterprise Partnership Members of the Shadow Board Doug Morrison Doug Morrison was appointed to the Board of Associated British Ports Holdings PLC in April 2005. Mr Morrison has worked for the group for his entire career, having joi ned direct from sch ool in 1968. He worked in ports administration at Ayr & Troon for 11 years before moving to the operational side of the business as a trainee supervisor. Within ten years he was responsible for all port operations at Ayr & Troon. He became Port Manager in 1998 and w as promoted to the position of Port Director, Hull & Goole, in 2003. He took up his c urrent role as Por t Director, Southampton, in April 2005. Ken Moon Ken Moon is Managing Director of Ken Moon and Associates, an established business supplying Health and Safety advice to SMEs throughout the South of England. Since becoming a member of the Federation of Small Businesses, Ken has maintained an ongoing passion for the vision of the FSB and ultimately, for lobbying on behalf of small businesse s. He has been involved with the FSB South East Hampshire Branch since 2001, in the capacity of both Vice-Chair and Chair. He became Chair of the Wessex Region in 2006, which continues as the largest region of the Federation representing almost 11000 businesses. Away from business, Ken's interests include golf, and more challengingly, his six grand children.

Doug Morrison

Stuart Hill

Stuart Hill is the Operations Executive for the IBM UK & Ireland, Global Technology Services BusinessUnit. Stuart is also the Location Executive for North Harbour. Stuart joined IBM in 1999 and spent thefirst 6 years of his IBM career in the United States in a variety of Finance & Operations roles. Prior tojoining IBM Stuart, who originally trained and worked in Production Engineering, held a number salesand general management roles in the Automotive and Defence Industries. Stuart served 15 years in theRoyal Navel Reserve where he was a Navigating Officer.

Following his initial career period with IBM in the US, Stuart returned tothe UK in 2005 and worked in two business operations roles at aEuropean level, reporting to the General Manger of IBM's NE Europeanbusiness - based first in the UK and then in 2007 living and working inZurich, Switzerland. In 2009, Stuart returned to the UK once more whenhe was appointed at the Operations Executive for the UK & Irelandbusiness unit. Stuart led both Operations and the Execution of the IBMUK&I Transformation programme.

Stuart is married to Naomi, who is also an IBM Executive. They havefour children - Matthew (18), Georgina (16), Hannah (14) and Dan (6).The family lives in the village of Curdridge near Winchester whereStuart is a Parish Councillor and active member of the villagecommunity. Stuart's hobbies include Motor Sports, tending his garden,music and reading.

Russell Kew

Russell Kew is currently Chief Executive at Wightlink, a post hetook up in September 2009. Wightlink is a company operating

nine ferries on three routes to the Isle of Wight undertakingover 70,000 sailings per annum carrying 5.4 million passengersand 1.2 million vehicles.

He has responsibility for the financial performance of thebusiness to a syndicate of International Banks who invest ininfrastructure. Russell is committed to providing a regular,safe, lifeline service to the Isle of Wight community withsustained high levels of customer satisfaction.

Previously Russell was Managing Director at Condor Logistics and a member of the team whoundertook an MBO in 2002 followed by refinancing and eventual sale to Macquarie Infrastructure Fundin 2008. The business operated 5 ferries using 600 trailers to the Channel Islands from the UK andFrance and employed 650 people in 4 tax domains, providing the lifeline service to the Channel Islandcommunities.

Russell has extensive operational and commercial experience within the customer service industry.Prior to his role at Condor, he was Operations Director at Frigoscandia (1987 to 2000), a temperaturecontrolled food distribution company operating from 12 UK sites on behalf of the major foodmanufacturers; clients included Bird’s Eye Walls, Mars, Nestlé, United Biscuits, Albert Fisher and SaraLee. Frigoscandia was responsible for developing new ‘just in time’ supply chains to meet retailer andwholesaler needs. Russell held various Operational and Commercial roles before being promoted toOperations Director in 1996.

Away from work Russell is Chairman of the Fareham Air Training Corps and is a Governor at FarehamCollege. His interests include motorsport, football, scuba-diving and general fitness. He is married with oneson.

Steve Barber

Steve Barber is Chief Executive Officer of Xyratex, aleading global provider of enterprise-class datastorage subsystems and storage process technology.He has held this position since February 2003, havingpreviously served in a number of executivemanagement roles in the company. He is a foundingdirector of Xyratex, completing a Management BuyOut from IBM in December 1994, leading thecompany to a successful IPO on the NASDAQexchange in June 2004, and growing projectedrevenues to over $1.5 billion in 2010.

In addition he chairs the Industrial Advisory Board ofthe University of Southampton aimed at strengtheningcollaboration between the university and industry.Originally from Zimbabwe, Steve holds a Bachelor of

Science degree in electronic engineering from theUniversity of Natal, Durban, South Africa.

John Craven John Craven was educated at Cambridge where he readMathematics and Economics and then took up a KennedyMemorial Scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology. From there he went to University of Kent atCanterbury where he spent 25 years, first as a member of theEconomics Department and then in a variety of seniormanagement roles. He was promoted to Reader inEconomics in 1980 and Professor in 1986. In 1987 he waselected Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; a positionwhich he held for four years. He became Pro Vice-Chancellorin 1991 and Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 1993 when he hadresponsibility for planning and resource allocation. He wasappointed as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Portsmouthand took up that position on 1 January 1997.

John Craven's main academic interests lie in theoretical economics and the theory of socialchoice. He has published three books including a well-known textbook on introductoryeconomics which has been widely used in schools, colleges and universities. He is a

member of the Archbishops' Council of the Church of England, the Cathedral Councils ofPortsmouth and Canterbury and of the Board of the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

Cllr David PughDavid, 30, has been the Leader of the Isle of Wight Councilsince September 2007. He was first elected to the IW Council inMay 2005, as the member for Shanklin Central. In June 2009,he was re-elected, this time as the member for Shanklin South.

He was born on the Island and grew up in Newport, Lake and

Shanklin. He attended local schools: Westmont, Newport CEPrimary, Trinity Middle and Sandown High. David studiedpolitics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth andsubsequently at the University of Southampton.

Between 2000 and 2004, David worked at Conservative CentralOffice in Westminster, as Head of Youth with responsibility forConservative Future. During this time (and also more recently)he represented the Westminster Foundation for Democracy ona number of visits to eastern Europe, leading training sessionsfor sister parties in developing democracies, including Serbia,Croatia, Slovakia and Macedonia. 

Since joining the Council in 2005, David held a range of Cabinet responsibilities prior tobecoming Leader in 2007. As well as being Leader, David is the Cabinet Member for Finance,Governance and School Improvement. He is also Chairman of the Island Strategic Partnership,a representative group of leading Island organisations, and a member of Shanklin TownCouncil.

In June 2009 David led his party to victory in the local elections, winning a majority of seats forthe Conservatives. As well as being Council Leader, he is also Leader of the 24-strong IWCouncil Conservative Group.

Off-Island, David is a member of the Local Government Association's Children & Young PeopleProgramme Board and also serves on a Ministerial Advisory Group to the Secretary of Statefor Education on the role of local authorities in education and children's services. 

Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson Gerald Vernon-Jackson has been a councillor in Portsmouth

since 2003 and has been Leader of the Council since 2004.He represents Milton.

Gerald Vernon-Jackson is Deputy Leader of the LiberalDemocrats in Local Government in England and Wales, at the

Local Government Association and serves on the NationalExecutive. He is also national lead for the Liberal Democratsat the Improvement and Development Agency where he isinvolved in getting advice to councils across the UK on how toimprove their services and their decision making. 

Gerald Vernon-Jackson serves on several outside bodies.He is Vice-Chair of the Partnership of Urban SouthHampshire, the organisation which brings together all thecouncils in southern Hampshire. He is a Trustee of the NewTheatre Royal and Milton Friendly Society Homes.

Gerald Vernon-Jackson was born and brought up in Hampshire and has both a BA and MScdegrees. He has worked for several local councils as well as for himself. He worked forDavid Rendel, MP and for the Liberal Democrats nationally. In the past he has also workedfor the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives, for the Leadership Centre for LocalGovernment and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.

Cllr Seán Woodward

Councillor Seán Woodward has been the Chairman of the

Partnership for Urban South Hampshire since its inception in

2003 and Leader of Fareham Borough Council since 1999. Heis in his 25th year as a Councillor and also serves on

Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Police Authority.

Seán was educated at the University of Portsmouth where he

gained a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Biology as well as attaining

Chartered Biologist status. He spent 25 years working in the

pharmaceutical industry and is currently the Managing Director

of Ferneham Health Limited, a healthcare company which he

formed in 2007 and which is currently trading as LBhealthcare

based in Whiteley. The company specialises in Physiotherapy

and Rehabilitation. 

He has led PUSH to its current status as a growth area and was delighted to be invited bygovernment to form the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership following a successfulprivate/public partnership bid involving the support of 70 businesses, 11 local authorities and 4universities. He believes strongly that the economic recovery will be private sector led and thatthe concept of a local private/public partnership will be able to help create the improvements inskills, jobs, infrastructure and affordable housing that is so necessary to secure the prosperityof the Solent area and to build on the successful work that is being carried out by PUSH.

Cllr Royston Smith

Councillor Royston Smith is the Leader ofSouthampton City Council. First elected to representthe Harefield Ward in the East of the city in 2000, hehas since held many positions within SouthamptonCity Council and on the Hampshire Fire and RescueAuthority where he is the Chairman. Royston is alsoVice Chairman of Partnership for Urban SouthHampshire (PUSH). Royston’s background is rooted in

aeronautical engineering; he spent 10 years in theRoyal Air Force flying as ground engineer with theNimrod maritime reconnaissance fleet before taking upa position with British Airways in 1990.
