    3.0 Major Green House Gases

    Among all the six(6) greenhouse gases identified in Kyoto Protocol, the following are of most critical

    greenhouse gases :

    • Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

    • Sulfur-HexaFlouride (SF6) Gas

    4.0 Property & Uses of SF6 Gas

    • SF6 Gas does not exist naturally – it is a synthetic gas and industrially produced

    • It has a very good arc quenching and electrical insulation property

    • It is currently widely used in HV Electrical Equipment as it allows the equipment to be very

    compact.

    • Unfortunately, SF6 Gas is a greenhouse gas and also very toxic when combusted

    • It is the most potent among all 6 greenhouse gas listed in Kyoto Protocol

    • It has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) 23,000 times that of CO2 Gas

    • Life span of SF6 gas on Earth is about 3200 years compared to 250 years for CO2 gas.

    • SF6 Gas is very difficult & almost impossible to disintegrate/ destroy in our life time

    5.0 Reduction / Elimination of SF6 Gas

    • As Society progresses, energy consumptions increases,

    production of SF6 increases and this MUST be reduced and/

    or eventually eliminated.

    • The UN Inter-Government Panel of Climate Change (IPCC)

    has classified SF6 Gas as one of the most harmful greenhouse

    gas and must be reduced immediately.

    • As a consequence of IPCC studies, the EU and other major

    countries Worldwide started to pass legislation and discourage

    the use of SF6 gas.

    • We believed it is just a matter of time before all HV Electrical

    Equipment must STOP using SF6 Gas altogether – when an

    alternative solution can be found.
