Size Comparisons

22nm tri-gate transistor’s gates that are so small, you could fit

more than 4000 of them across the width of a human hair.

A nanometer is a billionth of a meter. It's ten angstroms.

More than 6 million 22nm tri-gate transistors could fit in the period at

the end of this sentence.

Haswell has 2.6B transistors but High Core Count has 5.7B transistors

The atoms used in silicon chip fabrication are around 0.2nm

In 2010, an Australian team announced that they fabricated a single

functional transistor out of 7 atoms that measured 4 nm in length

Turbo Boost Evolution

Nehalem and Westmere

• Cores Turbo Boost but the noncore regions stayed at a fixed frequency

Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge

• Core and non-core boost together

Haswell

•Energy Efficient Turbo --The two elements of the chip can turbo up and down

independently

That means applications that are bound by memory and cache latency can drive the non-core (the L3 cache and

the interconnect rings) faster without boosting the cores; applications that are bound on compute can boost their

core clocks without having to raise the non-core regions and wasting power.1

Reliability – What to Look For?

1. Higher end processors and graphics cards use more wattage

a. Processor and Graphics come with thermal design

2. Cooling Design

a. Air flow

b. Complexity

3. Power supply efficiency – less heat inside the system

4. Reputation & Studies – check online

5. Certified Hardware

6. ECC Memory@ThinkStations #SWW15

Respondents reported on their experience with a total of more than

500,000 workstations, 92% of which were desktop workstations.

• Respondents were asked if they documented repair rates, or if their

reported rates were estimated.

• Only documented repair rates were used in calculations of repair rates.

Lenovo workstations had lowest average repair rates in all three years

represented in this study:

• Leading to 23% fewer interruptions in the first year of ownership

•19% in the second year

•36% in the third year

• Enough memory to store your model and application in memory

• Typical 8 to10x saved

• Avoid relying on storage devices, will be significantly slower

• Model sizes grow – double every 2-3 years

• Minimum in CAD today is 8 GB 16 GB

• ECC improves dependability/recommended

ECC Memory: A Key to Dependable Use

ECC Memory is available on all ThinkStations• Correctable memory errors caused by Gamma Rays penetrating the earth

• They often change a single digit which goes undetected

• A single digit change is significant

• 4800mm = 1001011000000

• 5824mm = 1011011000000

• 3 Year Google Study showed

• 1 system in 3 experiences correctable memory errors

• 228X more likely to see a second error in the same month

• Memory DIMMS get worse with usage and time

• Recommends ECC memory to avoid single digit memory errors

Google ECC Memory Study

Google ECC Memory Studied a Large

Number of Servers, 2009 Presentation

at SIGMETRICS/Performance’09 Conference

• Rates higher than previous small scale

studies

• 25,000 to 70,000 errors per billion device

hours per megabit.

•High-end 5 single bit errors in 8

Gigabytes of RAM per hour

•8.2% of all memory DIMMs affected by

errors each year

7.34x faster in writes and

8.49x faster in reads than the

base drive; this makes them

faster than Fusion I/O PCIe

3) RAID 0 Qty 2 Intel Sierra Star

drives are 5.93x faster in

writes and 5.82x faster in

reads than the base drive;

this makes it slightly faster

than M.2 PCIe drives

Conclusions

• In general, people should move away from disk drives, except for large volume

storage

• The M.2 drives are very high performance and low price and should be the first

choice for performance from a single drive

•RAID 0 qty 4 SSDs or 3 SSDs are a very high performance options

•For those that need the fastest storage solution Intel Fultondale PCIe SSD leads

and is the fastest storage solution tested

• Multiple alternatives exists for PCIe storage and RAID combinations to improve

performance

• Two SSDs in RAID 0 are slightly faster than one M.2 PCIe storage

Optional Performance/Productivity Considerations

Considerations for added CAD/CAE Performance• Load each memory channel with at least 1 DIMM

• P500, P700, P900 - Use FLEX Connector with PCIe Storage device

• Utilize RAID 0, 5 or 10 with P300, P500, P700 or P900

• Maximize simulation and analysis performance with P900 loaded with 3

NVIDA K6000 or Tesla cards, very large memory, RAID, dual 18 core

processors

Considerations for added productivity • 3Dconnexion SpacePilot PRO 3D motion controller for two handed CAD

• Blind interconnect for disk drives (motherboard upgrade) for serviceability

• New FLEX concepts –front access, Power, etc.

• 2 or 3 monitors

Color Accuracy & Calibration

Color can vary slightly from panel to

panel; from the same batch

Panels change over time, dimmer, color

temperature changes Calibration at the factory is good for only so long

Content creators & designers need

accurate color all the time every time

Routine calibration ensures accuracy

for the life of the panel
