We meet regularly to build a musical identity and work with our professionals, Music Director Richard Howarth and leader Alexandra Stemp, to achieve a high standard of performance. We are keen to widen our repertoire and expand the orchestra. We are particularly looking for string players. During his illustrious career, Martin Roscoe has become one of the UK’s most loved and respected pianists. With his extensive repertoire, consummate musicianship and immediate connection with audiences, he is in great demand as a concerto soloist, chamber musician and recitalist. Martin appears regularly at Wigmore Hall and has long-standing associations with many of the UK’s leading orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic and BBC Scottish Symphony. A prolific recording artist, Martin has a distinguished discography and is one of the most broadcast pianists on BBC radio. We are delighted to invite Leader, Alexandra Stemp, to perform Bach’s Violin Concerto in E. A treat not to be missed! Alexandra has a long established career as a professional orchestral and chamber music player and is increasingly in demand as a solo violin recitalist. Repertoire include the violin concertos of Bruch, Bach, Mendelssohn and Mozart; Saint- Saens Introduction and Rondo Cappriccioso and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Recitals have seen Alexandra touring Europe and the UK, from St James Picadilly, London to much closer to home in and around her birthplace of the Fylde coast. Richard will draw on his many years of experience in the profession to guide the orchestra on its journey around the world. If only we could travel to all these countries in real time! As a violinist, he led and directed orchestras for over thirty five years and now enjoys conducting top quality professionals as well as training and educating amateur and youth orchestras. He believes passionately that orchestral music has the power to change people’s lives, and that it is nothing short of a miracle how orchestras work. The Spring concert will see Richard take on an exciting new collaborative venture with Sale Chamber Orchestra, when players from both orchestras join forces in a performance of Mahler’s mighty 5th symphony. First destination, Baroque Germany with Bach’s violin concerto. No words needed here, just timeless music that speaks for itself.

It’s Mahler next and his magnifi cent 5th symphony. Conductor Herbert von Karajan once said of his experience of listening to Mahler 5 “you forget that time has passed.

A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience. The fantastic fi nale almost forces you to hold your breath.” Little wonder that its famous Adagietto has been used countless times for fi lm, TV and commemorative events.

Our journey starts in the Wild West with the overture to William Tell. Its fanfare theme was famously used to signal the arrival

of the Lone Ranger and his trusty steed. Next it’s the mountains of Armenia and Arutunian’s virtuosic

showpiece, his trumpet concerto...Then to the Steppes of Central Asia. Take a camel ride across the desert

and let Borodin’s enchanting folk tune beckon you to our next destination...

It’s Russia and Prokofi ev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite with its festive ‘Troika’.
