Carrefour’s retail activities and business model are closely tied to the availability and renewability of natural resources, as well as the quality and quantity of agricultural production. Carrefour has incorporated these issues into its activities and involves its 380,000 employees and its suppliers in combating all forms of waste worldwide.

To achieve this goal, we have set as targets: > to reduce energy consumption by 30% by 2025;> to reduce CO2 emissions generated by refrigeration by 40% by 2025;> to reduce CO2 emissions generated by transportation by 30% by 2025;> to get our suppliers to commit to specific objectives aimed at reducing their CO2 emissions.

WITH OUR SUPPLIERS

Combating deforestationDeforestation is responsible for 20% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Carrefour is rallying the suppliers in its main commodities supply channels (wood, paper, palm oil, soy beans, cattle farming) and is committed to ensuring product traceability.

Find out about some of the solutions implemented by Carrefour and its partners to reduce CO2 emissions and help limit global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius.

Major climate challenge for suppliersIn 10 countries, the “Major climate challenge for suppliers” rewards the projects that contribute the most to the fight against climate change. This international competition encourages our suppliers to become involved in our collective initiative.

Developing agroecologyNearly 70% of CO2 emissions from food products are connected with upstream agricultural factors and particularly deforestation, the use of fertilisers and farming practices. Carrefour is employing a variety of methods to develop agroecology in its farming networks: reducing the use of pesticides, using natural plant protection method, decreasing the use of antibiotics, developing sustainable beekeeping, agroforestry, etc.

IN THE LOGISTICS CHAIN

Optimising lorry loading Carrefour is improving the loading of delivery lorries in every country by introducing more efficient methods connected with pallet design. Packaging and delivery materials have also been redesigned.

Developing clean transportCarrefour teams are implementing solutions based on a circular economy and local waste management with the aim of recovering 100% of waste (cardboard, plastics, scrap, glass and biowaste). In France, Carrefour has also undertaken to deploy 200 lorries fuelled by biomethane by 2017; biomethane is a biofuel obtained by recycling biowaste from stores. Other types of vehicles are also being tested, for example electric and hybrid lorries.

13% REDUCTION IN CO2 EMISSIONS PER PACKAGE TRANSPORTED IN FRANCE BETWEEN 2013 AND 2014

Reducing kilometers travelledCarrefour is changing its logistics to bring goods closer to its customers. The order and delivery processes have been rethought: warehouses are now located closer to stores, rounds have been optimised and deliveries to different stores are being pooled. This has allowed Carrefour to reduce the number of kilometers travelled in France in 2014 by 6%.

IN OUR 12,000 STORES

Use of natural refrigerant fluidsCarrefour has undertaken to reduce the emissions generated by refrigeration by eliminating hydrofluorocarbon fluids (HFCs) in Europe and progressively equipping its stores with innovative units known as “clean refrigeration units”, which use natural fluids that have an almost neutral impact on the environment.

Closed refrigerators and freezers Introducing closed refrigerators and freezers can cut a store’s energy consumption by an average of 18%. The aim is to equip 75% of French hypermarkets by 2020.

Installing low-energy lightingAll projects involving the opening or renovation of stores in Europe and Asia pay particular attention to lighting: the use of LEDs, natural light, intelligent management tools, etc. Installing low-energy lighting can decrease associated energy consumption by 50% to 80%.

31.1% REDUCTION IN ENERGY CONSUMED IN STORES SINCE 2004 (in kWh/sq. m of sales area)
