(REGIONAL LANGUAGE)V. Make a precis of the following

in about a third of its lengthin your regional language. An often quoted expression isthat “Knowledge is power”,but so also are fanaticism, despotism, and ambition.Knowledge by itself, unlesswisely directed, may merelymake bad men moredangerous. Knowlege must beallied to goodness andwisdom, and embodied in anupright character, else it isnaught. Pestalozzi even heldintellectual training by itself

to be pernicious; insisting thatthe roots of knowledge muststrike and feed in the soil of areligious rightly-governedwill. The acquisition ofknowledge may, it is true, protect a man against themeaner felonies of life, but notin any degree against itsselfish vices, unless fortifiedby sound principles andhabits. Hence do we find indaily life so many instancesof men who are well-informedin intellect, but utterlydeformed in character; filledwith the learning of theschools, yet possessing littlepractical wisdom, and of-fering examples rather forwarning than imitation. It is possible that at this daywe may even exaggerate theimportance of literary culture. We are apt to imagine thatbecause we possess manylibraries, institutes, andmuseums, we are makinggreat progress. But suchfacilities may as often be ahinderance as a help toindividual self-culture of thehighest kind. The possessionof library, or the free use of it,no more constitutes learning, than the possession of wealthconstitutes generosity.Though we undoubtedlypossess great facilities, it isnevertheless true, as of old, that wisdom andunderstanding can onlybecome the possession ofindividual men by travellingthe old road of observation, attention; perseverance, andindustry. The possession ofthe mere materials ofknowledge is something verydifferent from wisdom andunderstanding, which are

reached through a higherkind of discipline than that ofreading..The multitude of bookswhich modern readers wadethrough may producedistinction as much asculture. Reading is often buta mere passive reception ofother men’s thoughts; therebeing little or no active effortof the mind or building up thecharacter. Thus many thinkthat they are cultivating theirminds, when they are onlykilling time; of which perhapsthe best that can be said is thatit merely keeps them fromdoing worse things. It is also to be borne in mindthat the experience gatheredfrom books; though oftenvaluable, is but of the natureof learning; whereas theexperience gained from actuallife is of the nature of wisdom;and a small store of the latteris worth vastly more than anystock of the former. LordBolingbroke truly said that“Whatever study tendsneither directly nor indirectlyto make us better men andcitizen, is at best but aspecious and ingenious sortof idleness, and theknowledge we acquire by it,only a creditable kind ofignorance - nothing more.Useful though good readingmay be, it is yet only one modeof cultivating the mind; andis much less influential thanpractical, experience andgood example in theformation of character. Therewere wise, valiant and truehearted men bred in England, long before the existence of areading public. The Magna

Carta was secured by menwho signed the deed withtheir marks. Thus thefoundations of English libertywere laid by men who, thoughilliterate, were nevertheless ofthe very highest stamp ofcharacter. And it must be admitted thatthe chief object of culture is notmerely to fill the mind withother men’s thoughts, but toenlarge our intelligence, andrender us more efficientworkers in the sphere of life towhich we may be called. It is not how much a man mayknow that is of so muchimportance, as the end andpurpose for which he knowsit. The object of knowledgeshould be to mature wisdomand improve character, torender us better, happier andmore useful; more benevolent, more energetic, and moreefficient in the pursuit of everyhigh purpose in life. We mustourselves be and do, and notrest satisfied merely withreading and mediating overwhat other men have been anddone. Our best light must bemade life, and our best thought, action. The humblest and leastliterate must train his sense ofduty, and accustom himself toan orderly and diligent lite.Though talents are the gift ofnature, the highest virtue maybe acquired by men of thehumblest abilities, thoughcareful self discipline.Atleastwe ought to be able to say, asRichter did, “I have made asmuch out of myself as could bemade of the stuff, and no manshould require more”

24. Read the following passageand answer the questionsgiven below :It is very easy to acquire badhabits, such as eating toomany sweets, or too muchfood, or drinking too muchfluid of any kind, or smoking. The more we do a thing, themore we tend to like doing it,and if we do not continue todo it, we feel unhappy. Thisis called the force of habit, and the force of habit shouldbe fought against.Things which may be verygood when only done fromtime to time, tend to becomevery harmful when done toooften and too much. Thisapplies even to such goodthings as work or rest. Somepeople form a bad habit ofworking too much, and othersidling too much. The wiseman always remembers thisis true about himself andchecks any bad habit. One of the most widelyspread bad habits is the useof tobacco. Tobacco is nowsmoked or chewed by men, often by women, and even bychildren, almost all over theworld. I very much doubtwhether there is any good inthe habit, even when tobaccois not used to excess ; and it isextremely difficult to get ridof the habit when once it hasbeen formed.(a) What is meant by the

passage into Malayalam/Tamil/Kannada :In this world of human affairsthere is no worse nuisancethan a boy at the age offourteen. He is neitherornamental nor useful. It isimpossible to showeraffection on him as on a littleboy. If he talks with a childishlisp, he is called a baby; andif he answers in a grown upway, he is called impertinent. In fact any talk at all from himis resented. Then he is at theunattractive growing age. Hegrows out of his clothes withindecent haste; his voicegrows hoarse and his facegrows suddenly angular andunsightly. It is easy to excusethe shortcomings of earlychildhood, but it is hard totolerate even unavoidablelapses in a boy of fourteen. The lad himself becomespainfully conscious of his lot. When he talks with elderlypeople he is either undulyforward, or else so undulyshy that he appears ashamedof his very existence. Yet it isat this very age in his heart ofhearts a young lad mostcraves for recognition andlove.
