ONE COMPONENTINK RANGES

for CommonThermoplastics(not suitable for polyolefinesand TPE/TPU)

Ink Range HG is the first choice of onecomponent ink systems for graphic andtechnical screen applications.

Due to the well-balanced choice of rawmaterials contained HG inks are suitablefor printing on many thermoplastics(foils, boards, formed parts) rangingfrom many polystyrene types, the widerange of PVC substrates to poly-carbonate (PC) as well as acrylic glass(PMMA). In addition HG inks are alsosuitable for many paper and cardboardtypes and some powder-coatedsurfaces.

A typical technical application of HGinks is printing on pre-treated PET-foilsused for decoration of membrane switchoverlays.

HG prints exhibit good thermoplasticforming properties and are suitable foroutdoor applications.

Gloss level: high glossDrying speed: quickBroad range of applications

HGThe Versatile System

J ink range is mainly recommended fordemanding technical applications.Screen printing inks J show good alcoholresistance, high flexibility and goodthermo-forming properties. They arealso suitable for high-frequency weldingapplications, exhibit good laminationproperties and outdoor resistance.

Gloss level: mattDrying speed: quickDemanding applications

JMatt and Alcohol Resistant

CX inks show their special propertiesfor quick and stack proof printing (alsodouble-sided prints) of large amountsof plastic boards, mainly polystyrene(PS) but also rigid PVC or polycarbonate(PC). In addition CX inks can also beapplied to PVC self-adhesive foils, PET-G,acrylic glass (PMMA) as well as paperand cardboard.

CX prints show good thermoplasticforming properties and are suitable foroutdoor applications.

Gloss level: satin glossDrying speed: very quickHard, quick, suitable for forming applications

CXThe “Stacker”

For many years CP inks have beenshowing good results in printingapplications on polystyrene (PS), ABS,SAN and also on PVC, PET-G andpolycarbonate (PC) as well as on paperand cardboard materials.

Even though CP is a one-componentink system, printed layers show a verygood surface hardness and good handsweat resistance. For that reason CPinks are often used by industrial andtechnical screen printers for the de-coration of formed parts requiringexactly these properties.

CP prints show good thermoplasticforming properties and are suitable foroutdoor applications.

Gloss level: satin glossDrying speed: quickHigh degree of surface hardness

CPThe Hard Ink SystemThese inks are especially suitable for

PVC substrates and pre-treated PETfoils. To a certain extent J inks can alsobe used for other thermoplastics suchas PC and PMMA as well as somepowder-coated surfaces.

The main field of application of J inksis decoration of membrane switchoverlays (as an alternative to/or incombination with HG inks). J inks arealso often used as offset base primerfollowed by conventional offset prints.J inks are also used to aid in laminationapplications as adhesion promoterapplied on offset inks followed by foillamination.

We also offer some special adjustmentssuch as obliterating grey (J 74, lightblocking layer for double-sided stickers),an IR-permeable black (J 66/IR) as wellas some adjustments for signaturefields.

For more than 50 years Coates Screen Inks GmbH screen printing inks have been successfully processed under

various conditions. Apart from a few special ink types our screen printing inks are not delivered in a ready-to-print

adjustment so that printers all over the world can fine-tune our inks to their specific local processing requirements.

Coates Screen Inks GmbH offers an extensive range of well-balanced auxiliary agents.

Below please find a summary of our most important thinners, retarders, hardeners and other useful additives.

Thinnersand Retarders

Thinners and retarders are mixtures of organicsolvents. They have different rates of evaporationand various degrees of solving power. Additionof thinners and retarders to screen inks willadjust the printing ink to meet local processingrequirements such as viscosity, screen stabilityand drying speeds.

Thinners have medium to fast evaporation rates.Addition to our screen inks is approx. 10 - 30%.If necessary a combination of thinner and retarderis also possible.

Retarders have slow to very slow evaporationrates. They are only added if, due to localprocessing conditions screen stability cannot beachieved using thinners by themselves. Usuallyretarders are used in addition to thinners.

Depending on type of retarder used, drying speedof inks may be slowed-down significantly.

AUXILIARYAGENTS /ADDITIVES

The following chart lists the most essential properties of thinnersand retarders offered by Coates Screen Inks GmbH

Retarder Paste

Retarder pastes are “thickened” retarders whichcan be used as an alternative to or addition toliquid retarders. They are mainly used for printingof fine details requiring paste form or thixotropicviscosities of inks used. Addition of largeamounts of retarder paste will reduce glossdegree of the printing ink.

Retarder Paste LAB-N 111420/VP

LAB-N 111420/VP can be used in nearly all oursolvent based screen ink ranges.

This paste has antistatic properties. Addition toinks will result in a slightly gel-like thixotropicstructure.

Recommended addition is 5 -10%.

Retarder Paste VP/K

Retarder Paste VP/K has a strong solving powerand is suitable for ink ranges RF/K, CX, CP, SG,PK and PK-Jet. Up to 10% can be added.

Hardeners are the second constituent of twocomponent inks. They are added to the ink atratios individually calculated for each ink range. This mixing ratio, e.g. 10:1 (10 parts ink : 1 parthardener) always refers to undiluted ink. Thinneris always mixed in after hardener addition. Thechemical reaction of both components starts assoon as the ink is mixed with the hardener. Forthat reason the ink has to be processed withina certain period of time (pot life), mostly withina few hours.

Pot life varies from ink range to ink range. Inksshould not be printed after this period of timeas then the printed ink film will not exhibit therequired resistances due to the progressed crosslinkage reaction with the hardener. Followinginitial drying 2-component inks will requireperiods of up to 6 days (depending on curingtemperatures) to achieve a complete cross

linkage. In that respect store room temperaturesare also essential as the different hardener typesrequire minimum temperatures to react (seeinformation below).

Resistances can only be evaluated when thecuring reaction is complete. Please refer to thedetailed information in our product data sheetsof the individual two component ink ranges.Hardener containers must always be tightlyclosed and stored in a dry environment ashardeners react with humidity!

For detailed information regarding hardener and addition please refer to the product datasheets.

Summary Additives

Dissolvers are extremely powerful disc mixers with a high shearing power allowing very effective mixtures of certainadditives with printing inks.

Caused by interactions between substrate, printing ink and printing conditions problemssuch as bubbles, pinholes, orange peel or thelike may occur on the surface of the printing inkfilm. In order to eliminate such undesired effectscertain additives, so-called flow agents, can bemixed into the screen printing ink.

However, all additives, especially flow agentsshould be added carefully and the amounts listedbelow should not be exceeded.

Mostly only small amounts of additives aremixed into the inks. Therefore it is essentialthat these auxiliary agents are stirred invery thoroughly to achieve the requiredeffect. Most additives should be mixed intothe inks using efficient mixers/agitators/dissolvers or shakers (see chart below).

● Wiecostat N

Anti static agent in liquid form which may be added to all our screen inks in order to increasetheir conductivity. Addition is approx. 1-5 %.

Antistatic paste LAB-N 111420 is a slightly yellow, clear and gel-type paste, which can beeasily added to screen inks. It is suitable for all our solvent based screen ink types andmust be thoroughly stirred into the undiluted ink.

Addition is approx. 5 -10 % depending on static charge.

Static charge is often quite problematic whenprinting onto plastics. Electrostatic charge mainlyshows as ink spots or stringing (”spider threads”)at the edges of the printed image. To avoid staticcharge it is necessary that the surface of thematerials and the surrounding area are sufficiently

Anti Static Agentsconductive. Sufficient thinning of the ink and arelative humidity of 55 % and more in the printroom are essential in such cases. A furtherpossibility is addition of anti static agents tothe ink, these agents are offered in two differenttypes.
