2 Solvent guide

Solvent properties

ColourThe colour of the solvent is given according to the Saybolt scale. The value for clear and colourless products is +30. For yellowish and brownish products the value is lower. Clear, dearomatised solvents can appear slightly green due to the removal of sulphur and aromatics.

DistillationThe distillation points provide information about the boiling range of the product.

SulphurThe sulphur content of the products is very low as almost all the sulphur has been removed. Sulphur compounds produce an unpleasant and harmful odour and also cause corrosion.

AromaticsAromatic compounds improve the dissolution properties and enhance the solvent's capability to remove grease. The ben-zene content is low in all of the products.

Doctor testA negative result in the Doctor test indicates that the solvent is free from poisonous hydrogen sulfide and malodorous sulfur compounds, mercaptans.

Aniline pointThe aniline value describes the solvency power. A low value indicates a stronger while a high value corresponds to a weaker solvency power. The aniline point is the lowest tem-perature at which the 1:1 mixture of the solvent and aniline is a clear solution.

Kauri-butanol valueThe Kauri-butanol value is used to indicate the relative sol-vency power of a solvent. The value describes how much of the solvent can be added to a mixture of Kauri wax and butanol before the mixture turns murky or cloudy. The sol-vency power of a solvent is stronger with a higher value.

Copper corrosionThe copper corrosion test method illustrates if the solvent contains corrosion causing sulphur compounds. The smaller the value, the less corrosion is to be expected.

ViscosityViscosity describes the fluidness of a solvent. Viscosity increases as temperature decreases.

Refractive indexThe refractive index is the ratio between the speed of light in vacuum and the speed of light in matter. The refractive index changes as the product and its hydrocarbon distribution changes. Refractive index can be used for example to moni-tor contamination.

Bromine indexBromine index is a value for the double and/or triple bonded hydrocarbons in the product. A smaller value indicates less double and/or triple bonds.

Vapor pressureVapor pressure indicates how easily a liquid is vaporized. The Solvent Emission Directive (EU Directive 1999/13/EC) defines a VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) as any organic compound having a vapor pressure of 0.01 kPa or more at + 293.15 K (+ 20 °C).

Important properties for safety

Autoignition temperatureAutoignition temperature is the temperature at which the product spontaneously ignites without an external source of ignition.

Flash pointThe flash point of a volatile material is the lowest tempera-ture at which it can vaporize to form an ignitable mixture in air. Flammability rating of the product is correlated to its flash point.

Nessol Solvents Low aromatic hydrocarbon solvents

Nessol LI 200A hydrocarbon solvent that is also known as mineral turpen-tine or white spirit. The aromatic content of the product is 14-20 vol-%. Flammable liquid.

Applications: As a general thinner in paints, coatings, cleaning of painting tools, various cleaning and washing pro-cesses, degreasing, dry cleaning and thinning of bitumen.

Nessol LI 220 (HF)A more dense solvent than NESSOL LI200 with a higher flash point. Slowly evaporating hydrocarbon solvent with aromatic content of 14-20 vol-%. Combustible liquid.

Applications: In cleaning, degreasing, paint manufacturing and shoe polishes.

Dearomatised hydrocarbon solvents

These solvents have very low aromatic content. Increasing index number in the solvent name indicates increase in density and flash point.

Nessol LI 36Pentane type dearomatised hydrocarbon solvent. Highly volatile and flammable.

Applications: As a propellant in plastic manufacturing and blowing agent in foams.

Nessol LIAV 75Hexane type dearomatised hydrocarbon solvent. Highly volatile and flammable.

Applications: In cleaning (grease, oil, wax), extraction pro-cesses, tape manufacturing, catalytic heaters and as a thinner for rubber glues.

Nessol LIAV 110Heptane type dearomatised hydrocarbon solvent. Volatile and highly flammable.

Applications: In rubber industry, for rubber activation, as a thinner for oil paints and rubber glues, as a component in manufacturing of paints and varnishes, in washing and cleaning.

Nessol LIAV 200Highly purified dearomatised hydrocarbon solvent. Flammable liquid.

Applications: In the manufacturing of paints, varnishes, wood preservatives, plasters and tapes, as a thinner for rust prevention substances, in cleaning (grease, oil, wax) and dry cleaning.

Nessol LIAV 230Highly purified, slowly evaporating dearomatised hydro-carbon solvent. Combustible liquid.

Applications: In cleaning (grease, rust prevention sub-stances, oil), as a lamp oil substitute, in shoe polishes.

Nessol LIAV 250Specially purified, slowly evaporating dearomatised hydro-carbon solvent. Combustible liquid.

Applications: As a carbon dioxide producing fuel in green-houses, as a heater fuel, in lighting, rolling of aluminum and drilling.

Nessol LIAV 270Highly purified, slowly evaporating dearomatised hydro-carbon solvent. Combustible liquid. Non-VOC compound.

Applications: In oil drilling, as an ink component, in various technochemical products.

Nessol LIAV 300Highly purified, slowly evaporating dearomatised hydro-carbon solvent. Non-VOC compound.

Applications: In oil drilling.
