I cycle to work every day now and I’ve saved £126 on bus fares in the last three months.” Jamie, employee of Millmead Children’s Centre The challenge The Millmead Children’s Centre wanted to meet objectives outlined in their staff well- being policy, and their environmental policy. Key areas identified for improvement were to: alleviate traffic congestion in the car park, especially in the morning when children are dropped off at the centre encourage more staff to travel actively reduce business travel costs explore alternative ways to make the frequent, short journeys to deliver produce from the allotment to the children’s centre. Sustrans’ solution Sustrans delivered an online Travel Challenge in the East Kent area. Providing a friendly, fun and competitive tool to encourage sustainable travel and increase physical activity. The Challenge was delivered over four weeks with great results. The Millmead Children’s Centre won the 21-50 employee size category. Sustrans is supporting the centre to develop a workplace travel plan, and has also serviced bikes to help them travel actively. As a result of this work, fruit and vegetable deliveries to the centre are now made by bike rather than van. £104 saved on staff travel costs per week £ 15 active travel journeys made per person (on average) 50% staff participation
