Solving two-step and multi-step equations

ALGEBRA 2.3

Language Goal

Students will be able to explain how to solve multi-step equations.

Math Goal

Students will be able to use inverse order of operations to solve multi-step equations.

Essential Question

Why do we use the inverse order of operations to solve multi-step equations?

Steps to Solving a Linear Equation:

**Goal: Isolate the Variable!!

1. Simplify each side of the equation if needed (combine like terms on the same side of the equal sign)

-Remember that you may need to use the distributive property before combining like terms.

-Be careful when distributing a negative sign.

2. Use inverse order of operations to isolate the variable.

-Order of operations tells us to multiply and divide first then add and subtract

-Therefore the inverse of the order of operations is FIRST Add or Subtract

SECOND Multiply or Divide

3. Always Check your work!!!

***Work carefully and do all your work on the paper! This helps to eliminate errors!

2.3 Solving Multi Step Equations Poster Requirements

Your poster should include:

* A creative title

* 4-5 notes on how to solve multi step equations

* 3 example problems that are not ones we did in class (these should be solved on your poster)

* Have explanations along side of all 3 example problems explaining what you did or why you did that step when solving.

* A visual representation to match an example problem.

* Explanation of your visual representation

* Make sure you are neat

* Use at least 4 colors to help organize all your information

* Double check your work so all information is accurate!

** This poster is worth a quiz grade!
