SOM154 Disciples & Disciple Making SOM15401 This class will examine the biblical concept of “disciple” & “disciple making” with the goal of guiding the church to be and make disciples. Example: SERMON One tool: the monologue sermon No participation by the audience congregation Sermons have little or no impact (Ano ba’ng sermon last week? 2 weeks ago?) Preaching is a tool Are there better ways of communicating God’s truth? Subukan mo: Wag magpreach sa Sunday. Ano kaya ang mangyayari? Ano ba’ng pwedeng gawin na iba? Example: BUILDING “We shape our buildings then our buildings shape us” No art or symbols Rows of seats facing a stage Lights, sounds, etc. Who is active? SOM-154  Disciples  &  Disciple  Making

SOM-‐154-‐01  This  class  will  examine  the  biblical  concept  of  “disciple”  &  “disciple  making”  with  the

goal  of  guiding  the  church  to  be  and  make  disciples.

Example:  SERMON  • One  tool:  the  monologue  sermon  • No  participation  by  the  audience  congregation  • Sermons  have  little  or  no  impact  (Ano  ba’ng  sermon  last  week?  2  weeks  ago?)  • Preaching  is  a  tool  • Are  there  better  ways  of  communicating  God’s  truth?  • Subukan  mo:  Wag  mag-preach  sa  Sunday.  Ano  kaya  ang  mangyayari?  Ano  ba’ng  pwedeng  gawin  na  iba?    Example:  BUILDING  • “We  shape  our  buildings  then  our  buildings  shape  us”  • No  art  or  symbols  • Rows  of  seats  facing  a  stage  • Lights,  sounds,  etc.  • Who  is  active?

Figure  3  Building

Page 2: Som 154-01 disciples & disciple making Workbook

• Who  is  inactive?  • Building  is  just  a  tool    Example:  SEMINARY  • 85%  of  Filipino  pastors  haven’t  formally  studied  • Is  this  bad  or  good?  • One  expert  passing  on  information  • All  chairs  face  the  front  • Without  seminary  (or  Bible  School)  training  we  feel  inadequate  • Seminary  is  just  a  tool  • SEATS  tries  to  be  different    SWITCH1                          Direct  the  Rider  (Rational  Side)    • What   looks   like  resistance   is  often  a   lack  of  clarity.  So  provide  crystal  clear  direction.

o Follow  bright  spots  o Direct  the  rider  o Suggest  ways  to  start  behaving  today

• (Think  from  “Eat  Healthier”  to  “Buy  1%  milk.”)  [BELLS]    Motivate  the  Elephant  (Emotional  Side)    • What  looks  like  laziness  is  often  exhaustion.    • The  Rider  can’t  get  his  way  by  force  for  very  long.    • So  it  critical  that  you  engage  people’s  emotional  side  –  get  their  elephants  on  the  path  &  cooperative.

o SEED  lockbox  • (Think  “we  are  paying  to  much  for  stuff”  to  “see  all  these  different  gloves  we  are  buying?”)    • Get  people  involved  by  modeling  to  them

1    Chip  Heath  and  Dan  Heath,  Switch:  How  to  Change  Things  When  Change  Is  Hard  (Toronto:  Random  House  Canada,  2010).

Elephant  Rider

Path

Page 3: Som 154-01 disciples & disciple making Workbook

Shape  the  Path    • What  looks  like  a  people  problem  is  often  a  situation  problem.    • Simply   altering   the   environment   influences   the   way   people   behave,  irrespective  of  their  Rider  &  Elephant.    • (Think  the  size  of  movie  popcorn  buckets.)    [Shut  down  your  Sunday  service]      Group  Work  How  can  we  convince  our  members  to  become  disciple  makers  /  cell  group  leaders?

1. Direct  the  Rider  (Rational  Side)

2. Motivate  the  Elephant  (Emotional  Side)

3. Shape  the  Path

Assignment:  Make  a  Plan  for  these  Disciplines  to  Happen  in  your  church  Promote  Core  Spiritual  Disciplines

1. Scripture  (Word)  2. Prayer  3. Worship  4. Service  (Diakonia)  5. Proclamation  (Kerygma)  6. Stewardship  7. Community  (Koinonia)  8. Truth  Telling  (Marturia)
