Li'l'.'o* KAO Xf It is truly an honor to have been asked to give this convocation speech. It hardly seems like 25 years since I was sitting in the audience where you are now, listening with awe to Dr. Leon Lederman animatedly discuss the Big Bang theory. Previous convocation speakers, some also from the Charter Class, have been exceptional as well. As a mere surgeon, I hardly feel qualified, although you know what people say: the only difference between a surgeon and God is that God knows she is not a surgeon. As a surgeon scientist, I develop hypotheses, design studies to test the hypotheses, interpret the results, and apply them to practice to improve outcome. Reflecting back over the past 25 years of IMSA history, I have a hypothesis that was likely shared by the founders of IMSA. My hypothesis is that with the right educational environment such as that provided by IMSA intelligent and talented individuals like you and your predecessors can achieve greatness. The specific aims to prove or disprove this hypothesis are threefold: (1) To summarize and evaluate the achievements of IMSA graduates to date. (2) To identify both personal and legendary examples of greatness and to determine those qualities and characteristics associated with greatness. (3) To synthesize the results of my research and to provide recommendations for capitalizing on your IMSA experience to achieve greatness yourself. Fifteen minutes is not long enough to list the accomplishments of IMSA alumni. Graduates of IMSA have impacted the field of science and technology; they have discovered new solar systems and chemicals that can kill cancer stem cells. They have spurred global initiatives to deliver care to indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest, to promote hand washing and hygiene in Africa, and to improve water sanitation in Jamaica. They have given back to the state of Illinois as educators, doctors, scientists, and business men and women; they populate all aspects of the workforce. They have given back to IMSA their time, energies, and expertise. IMSA alumni have excelled in fields outside of math and science as well - alumni have written novels and other best-selling books, won a James Beard award, and played professional baseball. IMSA alumni actually touch our everyday lives as well—did you know that IMSA alumni have contributed to the evolution of the World Wide Web by contributing to the development of Netscape, Paypal, and YouTube and even to the food that is offered on airline flights [which no longer require refrigeration)? These are powerful examples, which are by no means comprehensive of what IMSA graduates have accomplished. You might argue that these examples demonstrate selection bias on the part of the researcher. So, how do we know that these graduates are not the exceptions and are actually the rule? First of all, I would argue that there is no "rule" at IMSA, because the word rule implies average and ordinary. The graduates of IMSA are unique, extraordinary individuals. In fact, when I looked up the definition of greatness, the dictionary states that greatness is a variant of great which means "much higher in

It is t r u ly a n h o n o r to h a v e b e e n a sked to give th is convoca t ion speech . As an e n t e r i n g s t u d e n t of t he 25 t h IMSA class, you a r e all above ave rage and definitely no t o rd ina ry . Since I w a s wr i t i ng th is speech last night, I t ook a s h o r t c u t - I googled "how to achieve g r e a t n e s s " and identif ied > 600 ,000 ent r ies . Luckily for you, I have n a r r o w e d d o w n t h e n u m b e r of r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s to eight:

1). E m b r a c e g r e a t n e s s in all o f i t s d i f ferent s h a p e s a n d s i zes . Many ac ts of g r e a t n e s s r e su l t in fame, b u t I w o u l d q u o t e Mar t in Luther King Jr w h o said "Not e v e r y b o d y can be famous b u t e v e r y b o d y can b e great , b e c a u s e g r e a t n e s s is d e t e r m i n e d by service." Ray Charles said, "I n e v e r w a n t e d to be famous. I only w a n t e d to be great ." As a surgeon , t h e r e is a legacy of g r e a t n e s s (or a t leas t m o s t s u r g e o n s bel ieve t h e y leave a legacy of g rea tness ) . For example , t h e r e have b e e n 10 s u r g e o n s w h o have w o n t h e Nobel prize. For one, W e r n e r F o s s m a n w a s still a surgical r e s i d e n t w h e n he p e r f o r m e d t h e e x p e r i m e n t t h a t r e su l t ed in a Nobel prize. Whi le his m e t h o d s w e r e n o t convent iona l , he cer ta in ly exemplif ied w h a t m a k e s m a n y s u r g e o n s g rea t in m y eyes. An ar t ic le in t h e Journal of Invest igat ive Surge ry p u t it b e s t : " Surgeons advance the i r a r t and t e c h n i q u e s by bel ieving in themse lves , by b e t t e r defining the i r quali t ies , a n d of course , by e m b r a c i n g grea tness . "

W h e n I w a s little, I w a n t e d to g r o w u p and cure cancer in t he g r and sense , to find "the cure" for cancer . And whi le I conduc t r e s e a r c h in t he h o p e s of finding a t r e a t m e n t t ha t will affect t h e lives of millions, I have found t h a t I can have a significant impac t on individual pa t i en t s eve ry day as a physic ian.
